Construction of the 'Ring began in September 1925 by the design of Otto Creutz. The reason for the track was to be a showcase for German automotive engineering and racing talent. It is built around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg. Jackie Stewart

nicknamed the course (the version players of GT4 know) "The Green Hell" and it is widely considered the toughest and most demanding race track in the world.

The 'Ring is actually 3 tracks in one. The complete track was 28.3 Km (17.5 mi) long and 6.7 m wide (ca. 22 feet) with a total of 174 bends. This is then divided into two other tracks, the Südschleife (Southern loop) (7.5 Km (4.8 mi)) and the Nordschleife (Norhtern loop) (22.8 Km (14 mi)) (the one in GT4).

After WWII the Nordschleife became popular again, and was used in F1 races until the late 1960's (with the exception of 1959)

In the 1970's the track was under reconstruction to try and bring back the F1 racers. But in the end, mostly due to it's extreme length, it was unable to meet the ever-increasing safety requirements.

Work on a replacement trackm, named GP-Strecke, (4.5 km (2.8 mi)) next to and partly over the 'Ring began in 1981 and was completed in 1984.

Today most of the Sudschleife is mostly gone or has been made a normal public road, but the Nordschleife is a one-way public toll-road with no speed limit (altough it has been reduced to 20.8 Km (13 mi)). Often it is closed off due to testing of cars or races, but when open it is frequently used by motorsport enthusiasts. It is notable that accidents are very common on the 'Ring.

The annual highlight of the 'Ring is the 24 hour endurance race, which takes place in mid-June, where 220 cars (from 100bhp to 700bhp), over 700 drivers (amateurs and pros) and up to 220,000 spectators.

The 'Ring, as stated before, is used by many car manufacturers, where the most notable are BMW, Porsche, Mecedes-Benz and Audi. In 2002 GM also used the 'Ring to help enhance the 6th gen of Corvettes.

The fastest lap (Nordschleife) in a sports car is 6:25.91(Derek Bell or Stefan Bellof) which was on a Porsche 956 in 1983 and on a motorcycle is 8:22.2(Marco Lucchinelli) on a Suzuki 500ccm in 1980.

Thanks! Track histories always interest me.

Do you know of any maps showing how the F1 course and Nurburgring overlap?

You could check out the official Nuerburgring site, there's a link at the bottom of the topic.

@Quagmire : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Grand_Prix < there is a map of the GP-Strecke

@Secludus: are you asking if I am willing to take you on a tour of the track or if you can buy a tour with a driver?

There is a "Ringtaxi" which offers a a lap in an M5 for 130 euro driven by Sabine Schmitz (grown up in Nürburg, 2-times winner of the 24-hours) and her collegues. But they are almost never available, nearly always booked. If your'e interested here is a phone number : +49 2691/302-178.

Is Sabine the classic Teutonic blond (other than having a wry sense of humour) who shame-faced Clarkson in the Jag recently?

If so, from what I've seen of her driving, one of those 'Taxi' tours would be a blast .

I'm still holding on to the (now fading) hope that I'll get a run around the 'Ring in my future-brother-in-laws-brother's F40 (phew, intake of breath ).

It sounded like a certainty a couple of months back but now doubts are beginning to creep in ... shame. Still, GT4 is always there to comfort me .

Actually, prices have increased to €175.00. Therefore they dumped the old M5 and now you get to ride with a pro in this:

Last year they also had a 600HP race version of a Viper that could be booked for a (passenger seat) lap.

Also, Stefan Bellof drove the 956 to pole in 6:11.130. He shared the car with Derek Bell for this 1000 kilometer race in 1983 and also managed the fastest lap in the race with 6:25.910.

GTamateur, are you a member of the SmartGroups - Ringers discussion threads?

I found this little group of folks who apparently drive the 'Ring regularly, and discuss their adventures in the mailing-list group. Fascinating reading, and lots of pics and videos of real people driving the real 'Ring.

They don't mince words about folks who "learn" the 'Ring via videogames and claim to know their way around.

No, I am not a member of that board, nor have I driven in continental Europe But as I am still young there might be a chance one might have in the future to drive on the 'Ring.

Slightly off topic:
Does anyone know of an "advanced" driving school that has a 2-4 day program which includes track time ? (preferably in Europe)

The Grand Prix Course is in red above where it says "Campingplatz Müllenbach," at the southwest edge of the Nordschleife (North is up and right on the map).

I believe that the gray band just below the Campingplatz that runs to Müllenbach (the village) is part of the old Südschleife. I had found a page that showed where the remains of the Südschleife are, but I forgot to bookmark it.

Quagmire - The Nord and current F1 track overlap at the last turn before the start-finish straight. The Nord circuit is the other side of the gravel trap that catches any spinners on this last turn. If you have seen races or have, say it quietly, Toca RD2, after the left-right chicane you speed up to a fairly tight right-hander that swings you 180' back down to the start. If you were in the 24hrs you would miss this corner but go straight ahead further, then 90' left onto the start-finish grid of the Nord circuit, the same place as on GT4. At the end of the lap, after the huge long straight, there are two open bends followed by a tight right with armco in front of you. Under the armco is tarmac, this tarmac takes you flat out onto the start-finish of the Gp circuit. if you watch the 24hrs highlights on Motors or Sky you get the idea, but the two circuits go together very neatly.

I have various .wma clips of pros "binning it" in the 24hrs and other races on the Nord circuit, any where I can post them so people can take a look if interested ? I don't have a domain see..

Nurburgring is often misattributed to a certain race track, but really it's the word used to describe the feeling of indecision (or nur) if you should get a burger or onion rings with your beer...

If you were contemplating chips or pretzels with your beer it would be nurchipretzel...

Can anyone confirm for when the concrete in the Carousel was installed?
Or was it an original feature of the track?

I bought a PC to get a Game called Grand Prix Legends back in 1999 just so I could race the Nurburgring.

I bought a PS2 to get GT4 so I could race the Ring again!

Though not as demanding as the GPL version. (Put a wheel off track in GPL and you loose the wheel and some suspension struts with it!) But it looks sweet. And years of trying to get, and then keep my BRM P115 H16 1967 F1 car to lap Nurby in under 8 minutes has paid well as the PS2 version is very faithful, though as I expected true to the sanitized layout with the huge crests and jumps smoothed out and miles of red/white painted curbstones and Armco barriers.

I find the AI don't like the pit lane entry, it does "surprise me" from lap to lap as well!

Another lap
