I don't think this is necessarily true. I had the same misconception before, but it turns out that in the end it seems to depend on the person driving.

Sometimes you just have a hard time in the beginning, after changing from DS2 to DFW, but some people are much faster with a DS2.

But anyway, those are just my "findings" after an exhausting research about that topic (mostly because I cannot afford a wheel without a significant sacrifice, so I didn't want to buy and try if it worked or not).

The new Logiteck GT4 wheel is the best thing ever, I would strongly recommend it.

Yes, you may well struggle to beat your DS2 times when you first get it but after a week or so you will soon get the hang of it.

The main gain is in how much more fun the whole game experience is really.

My recommendation for learning how to get the best out of a new controller is to try to learn to control medium size drifts on rally or mid power Rear wheel drive cars. That way you learn how the car feels over the edge and can therefore learn how better to drive right up to it.

Good luck and happy purchasing.

Marc

Re pricing, check out ausprices.com.
Eg, link http://www.ausprices.com/cgi/Search?state=&q=logitech+force+ps2&cid=0
Driving Force $160-$170, Pro $260.

I wouldn't rule out what is called the Rally wheel in Oz. It's from ~$75...

Anyways, here's the logitech page with RRPs.
