Post odd/amusing finds here.

This one is local to me, the story goes that the guy bought the boat before realising it was too big to fit down any of the streets that lead to the docks or slipways. So it's been sitting here for years.

If it's too big to fit anywhere then how did it get there?

Ouch! It's on the streetview too. Neighbours must be loving that!

I would assume that the roads the boat came down are/were once wide enough but they go in the wrong direction. Could also have run out of money as relocating something like that is not cheap. Southampton isn't known for its ease of transit with a wide load anyway...

Just found this on a local forum:

I knew that fella, he was a maths teacher at Taunton's and as mad as a box of frogs. The council (who were prepared to take on the cost to pacify his neighbours as he had flouted the planning laws) did try on a couple of occasions to try and get it on a low loader, late at night, when there was no trafic about, but it always proved too big.

Last I knew years ago, he was using it as a hen house.

I assumed they meant it's big enough for the streets leading to his house, but not for the ones leading to the docks/slipways.

When the hell did it become possible to walk into some buildings on street view!? I was trying to find a business on street view, so I dropped the little guy on the map and all of a sudden I was in a bowling alley, complete with the ability to walk around inside it.

They've been doing that a while, I can't remember if it started with museums or businesses.

This is the biggest problem with the tech industry. They have to have something new every x time period. So when something is finally developed to near perfect, you know it's going to be ruined by some shit 'feature' or re-do that a board member full of people that never use it think it cool.

Or some collection of guys that feel they need to be 'productive' and come up with stupid ideas and bowl over said Board members who never use it that their idea is a good one and should be implemented.

Yeah, basically what I was getting at. Even most of the lower level guys know the 'upgrades' are shit, but they need jobs, and you cna't keep a staff on just to say "yup, still works"

I was looking at a route for cycling today and noticed that it shows an elevation profile. Never noticed that before, but I rarely click the cycling icon while mapping a route. Cool and helpful.

While talking to my uncle the other night I looked up his addy on Google Maps, went to street view and saw that the Google Mobile had caught my aunt and uncle as they were getting out of their car.

I was looking at a restaurant to see how shitty the part of town was, and across the street there was a little person in a dirty white t-shirt on the sidewalk.

Food was excellent.

The Nest in Jeannette. Saw these folks hanging out in front of the pizzeria across the street:

The Nest has been there for like 40 years, and is startlingly fantastic.

Anyone check out Project Sunroof?

https://www.google.com/get/sunroof#p=0

Judging by the addresses I checked in the the Chicago area, the price of solar still have to drop by about 2/3rds to make sense around here.

Damn Google Earth has gotten detailed. I was just having fun a few months back zooming around in 3D mode around the lower South Island of NZ marvelling at how i can rotate the map and see what superman would see (or a bird, or a plane...), then went to see Manhattan - where some buildings were even in 3D.

Then i click a link further up this page and EVERYTHING is in 3D. Soon you'll be able to zoom in from space, go into someones locked house, and start reading their books/magazines.

The 3D is a pain in the ass, honestly. They're trying to render individual trees with texture and it's really fucking up the ability to look at neighborhoods while house hunting.
