Rumors say Mercedes will adopt a chrome livery, and Honda wants McLaren to drop the silver as to cut all association with rivals MB. Of course that leads to white/orange rumors, but we'll see. I'd bet white with red accents and/or whatever their primary sponsor calls for if there is one other than Honda.

The usual and regular rumour that the test car may be in Papaya Orange, a la Classic McLaren. Gets trotted out every year though!

Sweet news.
As a McLaren fan since 1978 I've never liked the silver livery. White+Orange or White+Red would be wonderful (they could very well get as close as possible at the classic Marlboro livery) and the Kiwi Orange would be a dream come true. But I reckon the orange car will be just the usual test car livery.

Seeing that makes me wonder...has any team ever run into a situation where their livery color looks just like another's? I mean if this isn't early 2000's McLaren with some orange thrown in...

That said, the 29th will be a lovely day I think. I'm just hoping there is more inspiration from 60's-80's Hondas than the 00's "let's put the planet on it".

By pure luck I went to the Soumaya Museum on Sunday. And It was disappointing to see an almost dummy of a car. But I get it, public exposure right now means throwing the dog a bone, they don't want to reveal it too much and maybe they're behind schedule and the sponsors want to be able to spin/hype their investments on different media.

The E23 Hybrid renders are made by an outside firm (digipen) and are just that, a visual exercise.

The VJ08 didn't have an engine or brakes and the whole visuals-livery seemed hastily put together. The aero devices weren't telling much, either.

"With aerodynamic performance so critical in F1, McLaren traditionally chased peak downforce figures in its quest for success.
But while maximum downforce has its benefits, it can result in teams producing a car that, while showing good figures in the wind tunnel, cannot replicate them on track." (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117500)

I'm just glad that there's not some sort of Eco theme to the McLaren, I just don't understand why keep the silver? It recalls their 00's history with West & Mercedes to me, at least they could replace that merc silver with a pearl white or something.

Dat Sauber tho.... ;)

Blerpa

I agree with Nov, goddamn lose the silver already, I'm so fed up with that colour on McLaren, just put white in it, as usual classic light McLaren liveries.
That Sauber looks out of a PC sim... and it's gorgeously basic, flashy and coloured. Blue and Yellow are awesome together.

Sooo...

McLaren will change the livery of its Formula 1 car, says chief Ron Dennis, but only when big sponsors come in to justify the switch.

...

Speaking about the matter on the opening day of pre-season testing at Jerez, Dennis explained that he was not willing to embrace a bold change of colours simply for the sake of it.

"We have had the same [discussions about livery] inside the team: all of these people were saying, why don't we make it orange - because that was the old colour of McLaren?" he said.

"Well, I say, 'you just said it - it was the old colour of McLaren. Why the hell do we want to go backwards?'

"So what do you do? Do you create an aesthetically pleasing design? But for what purpose?

"This is the livery of McLaren. It has always been a combination of these colours - and it will only change for commercial reasons.

"It won't change just to make a few people in the company happier because they want it orange or they want it yellow."

Rosberg was two tenths slower on mediums than Grosjean on supersofts.

Wasn't there like a 1.4 second step between compounds in qualifying last year?

Freude am Fahren
February 23rd, 2015, 07:31 AM
Depending on which compounds and tracks. But in many places, the Mercedes were on par, or just a bit faster than the next runners on the harder of the two compounds.

Just looked up Spain Qualifying results. The Mercedes switched from Hards to Mediums from Q1 to Q2. Rosberg gained 1s, Hamilton .7s. Ricciardo did the same, and indeed gained 1.4s.

So only two tenths on a gap of two compounds is not looking great for the Lotus. Though the SS could be too soft for Catalunya considering the compounds used in the race last year (Hard/Medium).

Fine by me: stick to one personal number, to one personal helmet.
All the endless helmet changing was cartoony nascar-style entertainment crap.

I disagree with this rule. It's as unnecessary as special edition helmet changes themselves.

I love seeing Rossi come out with new lids in MotoGP, the face helmet a prime example. Let the drivers have some personality, please.

The problem with the helmet thing is that it was ok to do the odd special edition thing and they never needed a rule, then Vettel came along and took the piss.

Here's the ones he used in (I think) 2013:

That would totally backfire because the same octogenarians that run the sport would just see plain helmets as a throwback to the "good old days."

I think Rosberg just put an end to our discussion. 1.203 faster than Bottas. His 1:22.792 was on softs, Lewis' pole last year was 1:25.232 on mediums
The new Mercs are a second and change faster that last year's. It seems only Williams managed to keep within the same gap as they had last year.

Ridiculous.

3 Felipe Nasr Sauber-Ferrari C34 1’24.023 159 0.960 Super-soft

9 Pastor Maldonado Lotus-Mercedes E23 1’28.272 36 5.209 Medium

Rosberg's off Bottas pace by 2.2 seconds and two tiers down on tire performance. Does that mean the Mercs will be 4/10ths faster come qualifying?

As expected McLaren, Force India and Lotus have a mountain to climb.

My predicted pecking order, AUSTRALIA > AUSTRIA (Spain will be early to understand the new components and Monaco is always a fluke).

Mercedes > Mercedes
Williams > Williams
Ferrari > RedBull
RedBull > Ferrari
Sauber > Toro Rosso
Toro Rosso > Force India
Force India > McLaren
Lotus > Lotus
McLaren > Sauber
Manor > Manor
The Mercedes PU106B Hybrid is too much of an advantage for Williams relative to Ferrari and Red Bull and for Force India and Lotus compared to McLaren.
The disadvantage Honda's starting off with is way too much for this season. Hopefully Ron is patient enough on the chassis evolution, as they seem to have a very stong workbench.

Not sure if McLaren or Honda are to 'blame' but surely running a single team with a new Engine was/is turning out to be suicide? They could have 'bankrolled' Marussia/Manor with free/heavily discounted engines, combined with a reduction/wipe of Marussia's outstanding debt to McLaren, something that Manor would have jumped on. Marussia/manor would have made a solid if unspectacular car that (possibly I admit) could have done dozens of laps a day.

I feel bad for Mattiacci too. Is he even working for Ferrari anymore? I'm still not very clear about exactly what happened... obviously something political happened and neither one ended up winning. So who won in the end? Surely Ferrari itself isn't super happy about having 2 drivers who were significantly slower than their teammates last year... hope their new car will make up for it.

If Vettel end up winning championships for Ferrari, then he's gotta be one of the luckiest bastard champions in the history of F-1. Managed to always end up with the right team and the right time and with a lousier teammate. The year that he had a formidable teammate is the year with the crap car anyway so it doesn't matter... :p

If they do bring it back, they should mandate a proper lollipop man, and get rid of the lights system, that caused a bit of a spike in issues before it was banned. Also, despite the scary nature of the problems, they're not as dangerous as they seem. There's always someone standing by with an extinguisher if it does light up, and everyone is dressed to withstand fire for longer than that will take. It's really less dangerous than a loose wheel bouncing down the pit-lane.

*That being said, I don't know how much more dangerous a flash fire might be with the Hybrid cars...
