It's a great place, but it's not cheap.

You need to have another look at what house prices have done in the last 12 months, probably adding 30% to that now which is getting somewhat absurd

And yeah, corvettes converted to RHD (which you have to do) are seriously expensive, you'd be much better off spending 15k on an R32 GTR

The time to move to aus was probably 10 years ago when the mining boom was still in it's infancy but it's still a pretty good place to be. It has lots of animals that can kill you but has universal healthcare so (mostly) we can fix you. Ultra expensive corvettes but cheap GTRs.

Its nice we talk up all these killer animals, but they are rare events.
Shark attacks are on the rise, but snakes and crocs killing someone are still very rare.
My state (NSW) had no fatal shark attacks in the 70s and 1 each in the 80s and 90s
and we probably have the most people in the water
The last fatal attack in Sydney was in the 1960s. Thats Australia most populated city and with lots of people in the water, both ocean beaches and harbour.

About 300 people drown each year, mostly in rivers/lakes, then the ocean, then from watercraft (report doesnt say if they were in ocean or rivers) then pools and lastly bathtubs.

Watch a bit of Bondi Rescue to see how many people they save from drowning at a single beach.
A quick look at numbers - more people drown at Sydney beaches than the total of people killed by snakes, sharks and crocs across the whole of Australia.

Come here - but dont go into the surf unless you have experience. Waves look fun, but it can kill you very easily if you dont know what you are doing.

Most of us live near the coast, its about 85% live within 50km on the coast.
Pretty amazing stat when you realise how big the country is and that probably 85% of the area is more than 50km from the coast!

The largest inland city is Canberra - with about 400k (1/10th of Sydney). I think its the only inland city of more than 100k.
So we have no equivalent of Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix (or Toronto, Montreal)

The North Island is pretty much just Auckland (one day...) and the South Island has the same/less people in it than Auckland city (1.x million). And better scenery. And the best racetrack in New Zealand/maybe Australasia (Highlands Motorsport Park).

Except when you have a nationwide drought. Like this summer. Finally starting to get a bit of rain now and things are starting to green up again. To put it in contrast, i was mowing the lawn a minimum of once a week last summer, this summer i've only mowed it once. :/

And you get used to the temperature. ;) When we were in the Gold Coast this about this time two years ago it was raining pretty much the whole two weeks we were there, yet we had to walk around in shorts and a tee shirt so we wouldn't get too hot. Can't imagine how hot it'll be if it isn't raining. But i'm not the biggest fan of anything over 30 degrees Celsius. ;)

Yeah if I want humid and crocs Ill head north...
and in terms of close to equator - none of the mainland USA is inside the tropics! About 1/3 of Australia is (although much of that is desert and not technically tropical climate). Closer even than Hawaii (or anywhere in Mexico). Latitude - Darwin is 12S, Honolulu is 21N (Tampa is 28N and is "humid subtropical climate", and Tampa has never hit 100F)
Ah - both Sydney and Tampa have the same climate classification - Cfa.

Yeah todays humidity in Sydney is 66%, but its often much higher and hot, followed by massive storms and it cools. But we are in a run of 5 days of these really high temps, so the humidity is down a bit. Oh the weekend is going to be in the 70+% range.
So its not really dry here.

Actually interesting comparing record high and low temps of Tampa v Sydney.
Tampa record range is 18F (-8C) to 99F (37C)
Sydney range is 114F (46C) to 36F (2C) - never had below freezing in the city (I do at my place, maybe once a year, saw -2C this year with a bit of frost)

Yeah the temps can’t really be compared because your highs come at much lower humidity. Look up how humidity affects the feels like temps. A 97 degree day here has a feels like of around 107 assuming our hottest days are at a humidity of 70-80%. Whereas a 105 degree day there has a feels like of 95 if your hottest days are at a 40-50% humidity.

Being next to a huge saltwater bathtub with no real current or “ocean breeze” like on the east coast of Florida really makes it muggy and oppressive. My uncle lives in Tucson Arizona and I was visiting awhile ago and it was 114 there and everyone was freaking out and it just didn’t compare to 90 degree day here.

But I will say the desert heat is deceiving...you might not seem to sweat as much because the air sucks the moisture off right away. But here you might walk out of the house in the morning and it’s 85 but in 5 minutes you are soaking wet from sweat. It’s just ridiculous.

Because of the dead Gulf of Mexico water if we were on the equator it would be unlivable I suspect.

Of course my observation about Sydney are internet based since I’ve never been. Although Australia is first on my list of places I’d like to go :)

Sure the hottest days (over 40C) do tend to be dry, we get plenty of high 30s that are also humid. Sydney is over 60% humidity today, but its not an overly humid day (lovely clear skies!), the weekend it will go up and include storms while also staying hot.
So we get both, the real hot and dry days, but also very hot and humid.
It tends to go - hot dry, hot humid, storm with massive hail, repeat...

All those "hottest places in the world" were inland and would be dry.

I can't properly compare the USA and Aussie, because i was in Aussie in February/March one year, and in the USA in July/August another year.

But the USA (South/North Carolina and Florida particularly) was by far the hottest 'feeling' place i've ever been to, made Australia look like a nice place to go to cool down a little. New York was a little more to my liking, and more like the temp i remember from Aussie. We never left Manhattan though, so don't know if its hotter with less skyscrapers around.

But all of that was too hot for me, i'm comfortable in my cities normal range of 20-25 celsius (68-77 F) thanks. :)

It seems to me that JoeW is confusing Adelaide and Sydney. Adelaide gets the hot 40% humidity days but a Sydney 95-100F day typically is reasonably humid. It’s only the 110 days that are low humidity but when you get above that (highest I’ve experienced in Sydney was 118) it’s pretty brutal even if the humidity is 40.

That middle section is serious desert.

And one sealed road from top to bottom. Then its all unsealed roads off that - many with very little services. Common to see signs saying "next fuel 300km"

That first map has just polar, temperate and tropical - so you cant be subtropical on that as it doesnt exit. It has the Sahara Desert as tropical and Australia's deserts as temperate. Id put that as "too simple to be useful".

They are fairly approx, as I said the first doesnt even have sub-tropical and has most of Australia as "temperate" - the next has only Tas as that.
The Koppen classification is quite complex, with lots of categories. They are based on actual weather records, with details such as seasonal min/max and rainfall used to determine the classification.
Obviously there is still a big variation in weather within a classification. Heck even within Sydney it is vastly different between say Bondi and Penrith. One is a beach and has a much smaller temp variation and the other is 70km inland and generally is hotter when its hot and colder when cold!
Sydney city and the beaches dont ever hit freezing. But you dont need to go too far west to find places that do. My place did it last winter (first time Ive seen frost here) but get to Penrith and it will happen several times a year and across possibly 3 months.

I know the USA is having a very (very) cold day today... we are still mid 30s (90sF) and predicted for 38C/100F and humidity starts high and drops during the day. Then can rocket up again if storms come late in the day - 30% chance of rain by 7pm.

Headlines here pointed out that parts of the USA are colder than Antartica. Which isnt hard, parts can be above freezing this time of year. But they are actually colder than the South Pole!

The drought is inland (where very few people live, but has our farming). The costal areas get plenty of rain. We have droughts, but still get reasonable rain during a drought. Its relative - near me we get about 1400mm/55 inches a year, but its not a shock to get half that. That for a couple of years is a drought and can impact our water supply (we are mostly dam based). Go just 100km inland and the average is probably 600mm/year, so the average changes very quickly with distance from the coast and mountains.

Quick look on wikipedia and it says that there have been days with rain over 100mm (4inch), last November we got that much in 2 hours. I remember it flooding part of my apartment complex, the people next to me had it flood right thru their place. Luckily Im about a metre higher than them, so go nothing but a wet yard.
Very heavy rain is common, with storm cells dropping lots of rain and hail in a few hours. Less often is the "rain for days", but they usually a light rain and end up with less total rainfall than a good storm.

Although just before I left we did get a few days with very heavy rain (which is probably what you are referring to) had some flooding which makes the roads bad. A bridge near my place flooded - no not the creek below it (about 40m/120feet) but the drains on the bridge clogged with leaves and couldnt clear the water. One direction was down from 3 lanes to 1, on a road that is normally stop-go in peak hour, it was a complete mess, traffic banked up for many miles. Luckily I was going the other direction and only had to go a few hundred metres to my turn to my place.

Seriously people here are not worried by spiders. A little bit by snakes. But most people wouldnt see a snake.
Im more worried by ants (we do get big bastard ants that could wrestle you, or ones that hurt like hell if they bite)
Or grass!! Yes we have spiky grass that hurts to walk barefoot on. Called bindis (yes bloody Steve Irwin named his daughter after a grass). Id say more city people are worried about attacks of killer bindis that a croc or a shark.
Or the sun - you will find out people do worry about skin cancer. If you are very fair skin it could be an issue if you are also outdoors types.

Australia (or NZ) are also not that different that its a total culture shock. Close enough that you notice the differences, because much of the time it can feel the same and then something jumps out as different.

Now is definitely not the time to do it.
But maybe the time to look into doing it in 6 months or a year.
Heck whats the worst that could happen (well apart from shark attack!) - you come, hate the place, the people, the job - and you go back.
Or maybe you will enjoy it. Even if its just a year and you go back with a great experience and maybe a different view of life (and say "no worries" a lot)

Ok some news... we had a fatal shark attack in Sydney.
First confirmed fatal shark attack at an ocean beach since 1930s.

Not good, reports were "human remains found" and the shark was estimated to be a 4-5m great white. They haven't identified the victim, will use DNA. They do have person who they suspect is the victim.
Local politician thanked the surf lifesavers - "They are supposed to be saving people's lives, not pulling body parts from the water"
They haven't given too much details, but these all point to most of the guy being eaten.

Authorities have closed all the beaches in that area.
At least I only have to worry about snakes, spiders and dropbears.
