So, a Detolf + Dioder lights + some eBay risers have got me here:

Need to route the cabling neatly, and obviously fill the spaces, but my phone camera doesn't quite do it justice. Looks cool in person.

Modelissimo order made... ;)

Matt, it's hard to tell but have you got 18th scale models in there or 43rd scale?

Mr Wonder
January 15th, 2014, 01:25 PM
I'd think they're 43 as the detolf is only 400mm wide. A friend has his BMW art cars in one and it's strictly two per shelf without and kind of risers.

I've been meaning to get pics of all my Matchbox, Hotwheels, Siku etc 1:64 cars/trucks etc for a while. I plan to take them outside one sunny day, make up a nice spot in a garden, and take pics of them to try make them look realish (won't happen, they are mostly WELL used...).

And my 1:18 collection, and 1:24 collection has been kinda stagnant for a few years, save for a Gallardo and Diablo recently added (both build-up kits). My faves are my three AutoArt R32 GT-R's (GT-R, GT-R V-Spec II, Taisan GT-R).

Mad keen on an Autoart Ferrari F50 (only have Matchbox and Bburago ones), but they don't do Ferrari... :( Anyone else do a AutoArt quality F50? For AutoArt (or cheaper) prices?

AND MACK TRUCKS. Namely Ultraliner like my avatar, and Superliner. I have a few Matchbox ones (when they did actual truck brands, instead of not using any like they do at the moment) like the CH trailer trucks, and the Mack MC (fire truck etc).

Thought i had a better photo than this, but this is a (crappy) pic of most/all of my 1:18/1:24 model cars, plus a couple of 1:64 scale ones (like the brown/bronze/gold R32 Skyline).

Cars in the case;
1x Chevrolet Corvette
1x Dodge Viper GTS
1x Dodge Viper RT/10
1x Shelby Series 1
1x Ford Mustang GT
1x Porsche 911 GT3
1x Toyota Supra RZ (1:64)
1x Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
1x Lamborghini Countach
1x BMW Roadster thing whatever the heck it is
1x Ferrari F50
2x Nissan Skyline R34 GT-Rs
3x Lamborghini Diablo (red one was Dads)
6x Nissan Skyline R32 GT-Rs

Possibly all of them i think. Will get a better pic one day.

After much frantic ebaying I'm glad to say I finally managed to snag one of these.

It has been way more popular than anyone thought. One retailer sold 45+ in less than 2 hours. Consequently I paid a little more than I would have liked to but it's a fantastic model. I also have the original comic version that was limited to 1000 pieces in Japan only, and the Special Tuned version in white. I may sell the special tuned one as it really isn't needed now. We'll see how that goes...

So I ordered an RB9 from MintModels.com and it came with a broken front wing. I sent an email not long after i got it, and never heard back. I called their toll free number today (Saturday, btw) and a nice lady picked up right away. After pulling up my info and apologizing for not getting the email, she explained how they have had lot of problems with this particular model, and have even been in contact with the manufacturer who confirmed an unusual amount of problems. She explained how they have been shipping them with some cardboard propping up the wing for extra support (though mine didn't have that I don't think).

She said she's fixed it with a bit of superglue, and it's an easy fix, but they'll gladly send me a return box. She even said to try fixing it myself, and if it doesn't work out, to call back for a return anyway. I have no problem doing that, especially since there's a good chance I'll just get another broken one. So two thumbs up or their customer service, in case anyone was wondering.

Now, as for the best glue to use, any suggestions? Should I remove the paint at the join points?

(Oh and for those wondering, I'm not a huge Red Bull/Vettel fan, just starting an F1 champs collection to go alongside the Le Mans winners I'm collecting)

That last but brings me to another topic. Other than the Maistos (911 GT-1 '98, BMW LMR-V12 '99 and three R8's (00-02) Le mans winners from the last 20 years are extremely expensive and rare in 1:18. I hope that scales picks up in popularity again and gets better availability. An R18 Quattro from last year is like $300. Also, I'm punching mysef for not picking up the one of the McLaren F1's from 95 that were all over eBay for like $50-75 a few years ago.

What scale are they? 1:43?

Mr Wonder
March 29th, 2014, 05:54 AM
1:18 with some 1:12 stuff occasionally.

Check them out here (http://www.otto-models.com/index.php/en/ottomobile-our-models)

If you look at the cars they've done it basically looks like it's run by Gui. The fact that Simca, Talbot, Venturi and Matra logos are on the manufacturers page tells you how obscure things are going to be. Citroen Visa Chrono? Who makes a model of that?
The only downside is their ordering system is ridiculous, antiquated, and sports shipping costs that heavily reward buying several cars at once. This means they sell out before they're released and generally go straight on eBay at double what they list for. Having said that even at £60-80 they're very good models, the BMW's even have the service lights, and the dot matrix screen under the dials. They are resin though which means no opening doors or bonnets, but on the plus side it means more accurately sized shutlines.

It's worth a look if you're at all interested in 80s and 90s European stuff and for most of the cars it's the only model being produced in 1:18. That Le Mans Blue E39 M5 is now listing for well over £300 simply because it's the only 1:18 model of it available.

Had a late night at work last night (early morning - got home at 7am) and am just trying to stay awake til bed time, so figured now was a good time to snap some pictures of Ye Olde Hot Wheels et al Collection. It's kinda crazy how many memories are still wrapped up in these things. I remember where I got most of them and remember what makes many of them special. Also [sniff] some of them still have dog hair from my first dog stuck in them in various places.

Anyway...

I'll call attention to these first, because they are all dumb sizes. Too long or tall to fit properly in the die cast car cases I always had to store them in. Still angry at that rocket car. Note the orange GMC Palm Beach which started my fascination with motorhomes. :)

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/dumbsizes_sm.JPG

These are all the Hot Wheels with the gold wheels, which IIRC means they were designed to go faster on the various tracks Mattel sold. The red #27 and yellow #10 came with a track set my grandfather gave me for my ~8th birthday. I think the two Corvettes were McDonald's promotional items - they came with Happy Meals. The Supra is the source of my desire for a Mk1 Supra. :D

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/goldwheels_sm.JPG

Random Hot Wheels, Porsche 924 Turbo trying to get away in the first picture. In the second, you'll note the two Rabbits, one which has a wheel on top. I had the white car first and it was one of my favorites, but I lost the wheel. I was so upset about it I spent forever trying to find another white one, but eventually had to settle for a yellow one. The black Ford has been permanent markered black - I think it started out silver. Back in elementary school we use to shoot diecast cars down the mile-long rows of lunch tables until they exploded, then do questionable jobs repairing/modifying them. Usually that meant coloring them black. You'll notice it has a custom wing. That's all me. The orange thingy IIRC was another McDonald's promotion. The silver van and Corvette were, I think, part of a special set of "chrome" Hot Wheels - that originally included the now-black Ford. They are pretty darned old.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/hotwheels1_sm.JPG
http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/hotwheels2_sm.JPG

I think these are all releases of older cars. I don't honestly know why I have them. I think they were given to me as gifts as an adult and eventually made their way into the collection. The "Hot Wheels Postal Service" is dated 1970, but has a plastic bottom and goofy wheels... pretty sure it's actually pretty new.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/hotwheelsrereleases_sm.JPG

These cars were all special because the rear axle had an adjustable height. The one on the left is a Dodge D50, and 100% the reason I've always wanted a D50. The thing on the right has Corvette styling cues, which I thought was awesome back in the day. Actually, I still do - I'd totally rock a Corvette van.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/jackedup_sm.JPG

These three cars came from a Hallmark store in Irvine. They couldn't be arsed to carry normal brands of cars, they carried fancy Majorette ones. I ended up with them because when you're jonesing for a new toy car, you gotta have a new toy car.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/majorette_sm.JPG

A bunch of Matchbox brand cars. Matchbox never gets the attention Hot Wheels do, but frankly I think they're better. Higher quality, truer modeling, and more real world cars. Except for the weird green Moon Patrol and black & silver whatever it is. Notice the Sierra. Yeah, that's why I have an XR4Ti. :D Another thing Matchbox did was put trailer hitches on many of their cars. My grandmother bought me the yellow Renault and it was awesome because the hatch lifted AND it had a trailer hitch. The purple Z I got at or near John Wayne airport - it has a hitch and opening doors! Mind blowing stuff. Matchbox also innovated - the door on the trailer opens and closes, and the yellow dirtbikes come off the El Camino. That's game changing stuff. Hot Wheels never had that stuff!

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/matchbox1_sm.JPG
http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/matchbox2_sm.JPG

I made a mistake in this photo, the lame out of scale NASA RV has nothing to do with anything. But the other three are Matchbox Rolamatics. When they roll, something else happens. The yellow Ford originally had a lion that would rotate around the bed like it was pacing. The red whatever it is had a radar dish that would spin around. The yellow Mustang has little pistons that go up and down (because it's a four cylinder Mustang with a transparent engine block, dur).

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/matchboxrolamatics_sm.JPG

These cars are all shitty no-names, bought in Canada in the early '80s while on vacation. See the bit about needing a diecast fix above.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/noname_sm.JPG

These cars are all very old, from the '60s. They belonged to my grandfather's girlfriend's sons, and she gave them to me in the '80s. That green thing in the front is called a "Sizzler" and it has a two position switch on the bottom. To this day I have no idea what it's for. Check out that sweet Coupe Deville, though.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/oldhotwheels_sm.JPG

A couple very special Hot Wheels with real rubber tires. How that rubber hasn't fallen apart 30 years later is a mystery. Red Dodge Rampage? Yep, that's why I really want a Dodge Rampage. When you're a kid, you don't understand why a FWD car truck thing makes absolutely no sense, you just know it looks awesome.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/rubberwheels_sm.JPG

I got this truck for my birthday one year, and it was a revolution. The bottom flips open and you insert an exploding cap in the bottom, then crank back the lever. When the white lever in back is triggered, the hammer strikes the cap and it pops. Amazing stuff. I was really bummed when I ran out of caps, and my parents wouldn't buy any more. Can't imaging why.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/caps_sm.JPG
http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/caps_open_sm.JPG

Okay, Hot Wheels did do some innovation. These cars were part of another track set (Hot Wheels innovated bundling expensive tracks with cheap diecast cars...). You could reset their damage, then run them into each other on the track and they'd emerge in need of a body shop. As a 10 year old, that was pretty cool.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/nodents_sm.JPG
http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/dents_sm.JPG

Fast 111s were Kenner's attempt to get into the diecast market, but they never got any traction. It's too bad, because I thought they were pretty neat. Note the black one front and center. Lunch table racing survivor. :D And the yellow Camaro station wagon with a rear mounted engine? Brilliant. Maybe better than a Corvette van.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/fast111s_sm.JPG

Tomy's entry in the market were Tomica cars, which were built in a frustratingly random scale. Why is a VW Beetle bigger than an S-class and fully half the size of a gasoline tanker? Almost as maddening as the odd-shaped cars that started this show and tell. On the other side, they made some of the coolest, most excellently detailed and interesting models. The Supra, 911 and Pantera were all brilliant. Actually, that 911 is a replacement for another, identical car whose whale tail broke off. Like the Hot Wheels Rabbits, I spared no expense in securing an intact example, traveling to numerous Vons supermarkets until one could be had. Also, notice the cool racing stripe I put on the Beetle, and I think that Ferrari may have been marked black at some point.

http://www.sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/diecast/tomica_sm.JPG

Wow, when you're a kid 150 cars seems like a lot. As an adult, not so much. But whatever. It was fun looking at them again, Time to pack them away for another 25 years or so, see what they're worth in 2040. :)

Big fan of that Fiat - just one more way that Matchbox trumped Hot Wheels. :) In my mind, it probably had a lot to do with UK vs US, and the fact the only domestic car my parents ever owned was a 1979 GMC van - until the 2012 Ford Fusion. I had a bunch of European cars around as a kid, and Matchbox captured them better than Hot Wheels.

I'd definitely love to see what you've got... made me happy going through mine. :)

I had a huge result on eBay last week; Autoart NSX in Formula Red. These have been sold out for years and I've lusted after one ever since. You might be able to find a black or a silver one, but not for less than £200, and not red. Well except the two on eBay in Japan for over £450 each... Autoart have since released the NSX Type-R in red/yellow/white/police livery and those are readily available for £180 or so. I scored this from a buy it now price for just £113 posted. The ebay listing for mine showed the car still in the polystyrene container but with the lid off, this covered the wheels which are the main differentiator between the two models. I think people just assumed it was a used Type-R and skipped it. It's absolutely mint, it even has the strap holding the engine cover down still on it.

I've always loved the NSX but only the first iteration and only really in red. I can also sell it tomorrow for nearly double what I paid for it. Very happy with this one.

I missed a few opportunities to pick up the UT version of this F1 back when I was in college and poor. Almost bit on one new in box once at about $75. This one cost me an extra $50 in the end.

I also am pissed I missed out on the Spark Champion R8 when I picked up the Team Goh one. Now it's hard to find (at least last time I looked). Then starting with that year, the R10's and beyond, they are all hard to find and so expensive. Spark also makes the '96 and '97 TWR Porsches, which are pricey but oh so yummy.

Does anyone know of (or remember) a line of Matchbox cars from the late '70s or very early '80s that were not the standard 1/64 models? Possibly with more detail? Anyone know what this product line was called?

Rare White Ape

Were they the same-ish size or were they larger, like 1/32 scale? I remember a range of larger ones called Superkings, of which I had a few from the late-80s to early 90s.

Here's a cool one I discovered while typing this out:

WRT large-scale Matchbox.

http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/kingsindex.htm

Historically larger models were originally based on larger prototypes, such as semi-trailers, including car transporters, and called "Major Packs".
http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/2index/major.htm

(though in fact, the first car transporter predated the Major Packs was sold as one of the "Accessory Packs").
http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/2index/accessor.htm http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/2index/car.htm

Scale would get confused, for example with the http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/2index/racing.htm versus the cars it was designed to carry. http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/1index/xx19d.htm
http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/1index/xx52b.htm

I need to check first-hand sources to see if a scale was even published for the transporter, but it always looked (from seat size) an even larger scale than the already much larger than 1/64 cars listed above (which published scale I can't track down right now, either).

And so, somewhere along the way came the small number of Dinky Toy competitors.
http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/kings/k21-1.htm etc. (you can find the rest at http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/kingsindex.htm)
Ah, yes. The police car was actually a Station Wagon. http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/kings/k23-1.htm
The 1-75 range had included a metallic green Mercury Station Wagon ("Commuter") in addition to a Cougar sedan/coupe. (And apparently the 1-75 Commuter came out as a police car later in SF days).

Though, true, a limited number of larger construction vehicles also dated back to the 1960's.
http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/kings/k2-1.htm

You might also be interested in the range of Lesney toys predating Matchbox.

I got the Maisto 1/18 2017 Ford GT. The good part is that both the rear engine cover and the front compartment open. The bad thing is that it's clear that they had no clue what's actually in those compartments in the real car, because the model is nothing like the real thing inside these compartments.

How do I know? I've been inside a real one, and I know what's in these compartments. :D

Someone else have the rights to the Ford?

I wish I had bought a bunch of Le Mans winners a couple years ago when they were available. Now it's impossible to find pretty much any winners from the R10/15/18 years. At one point I think I found every winner from like 89 on. Even the TWR Porsches were available at Modelissimo. And a bunch of them were around the $100 mark. Now good luck getting below $150 for any of them.

On the other hand, I found a couple good deals on black friday/cyber monday. I'll post when they get here.

Thing i hate about the Hot Wheels etc cars is that they often don't bother painting rear lights etc, and i've been insanely tempted to go through all my cars and paint the lights on... I probably should just do it, as i'm not building a collection that i intend to sell years down the track, so don't care about devaluing them really.

I learned the hard way after selling my Matchbox Motorcity road/tower building set when i was a kid - now you can't find it, and when you do they cost hundreds of dollars...

My latest non 1/64 acquisition. Donnie Allison's Miller Nova that he raced in the Busch series in 1986. Kind of funny that they still ran Novas/Venturas/Omegas so many years after they quit being produced. Caught a Busch race from '83 at North Wilkesboro on Youtube and one of the back markers was running a Dodge Challenger(the original one, not the Mistu based one). While eBay lists the same model going anywhere from $75-$125, I somehow lucked into this at $15.50. The seller repeatedly told me I got a hell of a deal on it. Guess so.
I bought my niece's son a few Matchbox for last Xmas. I hadn't bought any in many years. It made me curious. It started with getting an MBX Volvo wagon off of Amazon for $4. Six months later and I have somehow amassed 350 Matchbox and Hot Wheels. Don't know how that happened. And that Volvo wagon? I keep seeing it at every Dollar Tree I visit for $1. Heh.

But TSM-Model has made them and they are in stock at the manufacturer's website (https://tsm-models.com/product-detail.php?pd=1075). They're probably not as good as the AA ones from 1996 but still... If anyone is keen they're US$215

I have some older ones that I have to wrap in bubble wrap, but luckily they're all the cheaper Maisto. While rare, they're also more thick plastic for the wings and such, so less delicate.

Went on a bit of a shopping spree adding to my collection of Le Mans winners. Had a couple of 15% of codes, so what can you do...

Also, I did my first decaling of a tobacco car. Wasn't as hard as I though it was going to be. Now the Schumacher Bennetons I have are probably going to be more of a challenge...

1982 Porsche 956 added the Rothmans logos:
3788

And I added Porsche's first victory as well, among others:
3787

So far I have the following winners in 1/18. My goal is to have every single one one day. A bit impossible, since in 1/18 many are not made. But I may fill the gaps with 1/43 eventually.

Really angry at missing out on a few back when they were available. Mainly the Champion R8, and Autoart 787B.

There are two new 787s out there. One by Spark, one by CMR. Spark one is expensive and CMR is from Germany only, and not sure on CMR quality. Also, Spark will be releasing the TWR Porsche from '96, and hopefully from '97 eventually. I'd really like to complete the '90s since that for me was what got me into sportscar racing.

And yeah about the 787B nothing quite compares to the AA one. I've only seen pictures of the Spark one and hadn't heard of CMR until your post. Both of them seem to be OK but have their own little inaccuracies.
