And with this, I declare the internet complete.

Seemingly nonsensical airport codes have always fascinated me. I finally understand now.

Not until they make one that explains all of the ICAO codes as well... :p

also
With a few exceptions, airport codes starting with ‘Y’ designate Canadian airports. The ‘YZ’ isn't as clear, but is said to be the old railway station code for Malton, an area west of Toronto where the airport is located.

Still a mystery.

I finally figured out why Orlando is MCO, though, an old Air Force airbase called McCoy.

Now I know where the X's (like LAX) come from!

YYZ continues to be the dumbest and most embarrassing airport code in the world. Vancouver is YVR...at least the VR part makes sense.

It's a shame Canada doesn't have a YOU.

Anyway, nothing beats the name SUX!

I like FAT, GRR, PIE, SIN, SUX and YOW. But I'm really surprised that there is a BOM code

Echoing others, YYZ is awesome. At least your airport doesn't sound like something you'd take to help you take a dump.

KFWA is the local one here. the other smaller is KSMD.

KFWA makes sense.. until you realize the airport was not Fort Wayne International to start with, it was Baer Field and kept that name until 1991.

I know the meaning behind out local: Lehigh Valley International Airport, ABE, is named because the airport was formerly known as Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport.

Sac International (SMF) used to be Sacramento Metropolitan Field.

UC Davis' airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_Airport) is EDU, which seems fairly self-explanatory. :D

From what i understand basically every airport with an X in its designation has it as simply a place holder/space filler when they switched to 3 digits from 2.

well those at the end anyway.

The X stands for "marks the spot", by any self-respecting pirate :P

Some other fun Pennsylvania ones:

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton - AVP, actually located in Avoca, PA
Harrisburg - MDT, actually located in Middletown

Echoing others, YYZ is awesome. At least your airport doesn't sound like something you'd take to help you take a dump. I don't know, it sounds like they ran out of ideas for a creative combination of letters. As if to say,"here just take YYZ, we can't be bothered to think of anything better".

The city code is supposedly YTO which is actually decent. Don't know why they don't just make that the airport code. We have a small island airport, (which pretends to be a real airport), and it's code is YTZ. Even that looks better than YYZ.
