*sigh* - it looks like these are the latest to get caught in an asset bubble. I really should have bought an SC or Carrera 3.2 back in 2010 - now they're running about $10k more than they cost back then.

How long can this continue? Does it still make sense to buy, with the market still climbing? Or do you think we've topped out and are heading for a crash?

Will owning one make you happy in the pants?

If answer is yes ... buy it, own the hell out of it.

That's my justification for buying the 86. Every time I see it in the driveway, or drive it (even to work), I completely don't regret a thing about the money "wasted".

There's a lot of cars that suddenly jumped over the last few years. 2002s, Sunbeam Tigers, 911s, etc. :|

Yeah, it's finally starting with some Japanese classics as well.

I'd like to own a 911 someday, and it seems to me that the air-cooled models will be a solid investment. I think the FD RX-7 and the S2000 might be good choices as well that are currently more reasonably priced.

LOL, look at the 993s.

I think the best bang for the buck is the 993 Turbo. As I've seen mentioned, it is a 2/3rds 959 for 35k.

Any air-cooled porsche right now is an investment. The 993s that are going for crazy money on only collector cars. Period.

Even the 996es have started to increase ever so slightly. I'd say do it sooner rather than later. You must ask yourself if you are wanting an investment to possibly make money on, or something you can DRIVE and not feel worried about.

Turbo 996es are sub 40k on a fairly regular occurrence.

On what planet have you seen a 993 Turbo for $35k? You must mean the 996 Turbo.

Sorry, I meant 996 Turbo.

Darn, I was hoping for an Autotrader link. ;)

Even if I buy it as an investment I intend to drive it - that's what stated value insurance is for. :)

Look in the pistonheads link above. Not seeing any south of £74,995k.

EDIT: Oh you meant 996.

Keep in mind that many of the people around our age (mid 30s to mid 40s) are really starting to hit their stride financially, so the thing you're considering is likely being considered by lots of other people. Get in quick!

I think you're right about a lot of other cars (E30 M3 springs to mind) but the 911 has basically seen all years experience this rise, up through the 993s.

The last of the manual Porsches would probably be a nice investment too. Prices are already going a little stupid.
