Surprised nobody has started a thread about it. I only found out about it a couple days ago so maybe it has been flying under the radar. It's free to download and free to play. Though I guess you can micro transaction yourself to death if you want to speed up leveling.

Neverwinter (http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/xbox/neverwinter/news/detail/9076493-content-preview%3A-neverwinter-on-xbox-one)

Looks like it might be somewhat affiliated with Neverwinter Nights. Based in the same realm it seems. Anyways, worth the punt I figure.

I'd like to know what is the difference between this and Dungeons&Dragons Online - beside the former being set in Neverwinter (Forgotten Realms) and the latter in Eberron.
I'm going to try out Neverwinter tomorrow evening... are there any servers people here are going to use? (EDIT: Nevermind, PC and Xbox One servers are separated. Meh.)

Downloaded and first character created: Udokas, a Half-Orc Fighter focused on tanking (sword & board fighting).

Just wrote up a basic bio for this tusker; a farm boy from Mistledale. You can look at other players' bios (if they've written one) as well as character titles (if they've set one).

Fighting so far is *painfully* simple. Looks like all of your fighting moves need to be unlocked, there's no basic block or anything yet. Simpler than Fable or even Dragon Age: Inquisition at this point.

I made it from the beach through the simple forest path to the first camp under Lt. Linkletter.

Other players can come and go through your game. You can talk to them or let them fight baddies for you. Partying up should be easy as anything. Eh, not bad enough to delete yet, that's about the highest praise I can give it so far. ;)

I played it for a bit last night with a Wood Elf Hunter/Ranger. Achieved Level 5 which entailed completing the tutorial and a couple simple quests in the first town. FYI, You will unlock all your basic moves via the tutorial.

The system notifications in the corner of the screen are completely annoying. And it appears you can't turn it off. :smh:

Could be fun for a change of pace but overall, meh. Ain't no Destiny I know that. Bethesda needs to develop a graphical upgrade version of Skyrim for the Xbone and PS4. And it needs to be mulitplayer. :P

Ah good to know -- yeah I'll try to finish the tutorial tonight.

Well it could be like Destiny in that you need to play it for 20 hours before you get to play "the real game".

And you can get to Level 20 in Destiny in about 8.5 hours. Though I guess Level 30 is what is needed to access all parts of the game. And I'd say that takes longer than 20 hours especially the first time.

Wow something on consoles that excites me :)

Damnit, now I guess an XB0 might get on my radar for the first time.

novicius

Leon, this is an *old* PC game. Debuted at E3 2011 and launched on PC back in 2013, so you don't necessarily have to buy a new console to play. The benefit of that is that there is a LOT of info out there on Neverwinter.

Also note that this is a "Free2Play" game, which means that microtransactions rule the roost. I'm having decent fun playing the free game but my gear mods are pretty limited at this point (due entirely to being a low level and not grinding). I haven't dived into Crafting yet either but based on the number of components I'm carrying, it looks pretty deep -- the only thing is that I don't know how much freeplay grinding will be required. I'm guessing a lot (read: 12+ months)... but this isn't a bad thing -- that's a great ROI. :D

Here's a screenshot of the in-game currency, Zen.

You just know there are people out there who've dropped over $1,000+ USD on this game. #walletwarriors #ruiningdevsforeveryone

Also, I've read that you only get 2 character slots to begin with. Plan accordingly.

Re: the action, Phil is definitely right in saying that your combat options open up by the time you're done with the tutorial. You look for missions (typically short, some of them long -- and so far they've been easy for a Tank), five-man party-up or roll solo and go. The rules are based on a modified (read: lightened) version of D&D v4.0. Just means that you typically have Special Attacks pre-defined and really, playing on a gamepad it makes sense. The button combos do get a lil' hectic but now the game is showing its depth!

Honestly the game IS pretty damn close to the original play style of Bioware's Neverwinter Nights (I didn't play Neverwinter Nights 2 beyond a Level 5 character), just adapted to a gamepad; you have about 30+ Emote actions (complete with animations -- see this pic below where my 'toon is doing push-ups while waiting for a party :D), send Private Messages, set up hot keys for your controller, etc. The menus and options take quite a few clicks to get to unfortunately so learn them well! Definitely not as easy as playing on PC of course but still, not bad as-is. This game might push me to buy a new Chatpad! This last pic is at Level 11; I've added a Blue Shader to his low-level armor. I will save all future colors from here on out since this armor will be getting outclassed probably later tonight but I wanted to see how it works: you can select 3 different areas to shade, a Primary area, a Secondary area and a Detail area. This dye was applied to a Primary area.

One thing that's bugged is that every time you level up, the process deletes your character description. :smh: Considering the age of this title, I doubt they're going to fix it anytime soon -- this is just a cash cow from here on out. Another thing that is annoying as fuck is the Admin message spam every time someone on your server/instance unlocks a Zen-fueled Tyrannical Lockbox. I just look at them like commercials (which they basically are -- these chests will only open with Keys that you have to use Zen to buy either quickly with cash or with hard-earned Astral Diamonds).

As Phil alluded to, the game changes at Level 60 as the amount of Astral Diamonds and other mats to level up your swank Legendary gear turns into astronomical values. I'm going to see what I can do and how long the game will hold me playing it strictly free... but so far I'm cautiously enjoying my free download. :D

Novi, yup I realise this is an old game, just ported to console.

My X360 however is quirky and likes to RROD. It is just that I've been waiting for the next Halo to come out requiring a XB1 before contemplating a purchase, as that is basically the only thing I use that console for*

*and even then not lately as my Halo buddy has moved to the UK.

Supposedly it is like that at Level 60. Once you hit that level then it is a lot of grinding or you have to buck up the $$$.
As with Destiny, my number one goal is just to enjoy the game. I am not worried about top flight gear or numbers, just playin through the content. Much like in racing, I want to make it to the finish line using the least amount of resources as possible. :D

And you can get to Level 20 in Destiny in about 8.5 hours. Though I guess Level 30 is what is needed to access all parts of the game. And I'd say that takes longer than 20 hours especially the first time.
I don't know if there are game play stats for us but I think I hit Level 30 in probably ~25 hours. No baby yet and both my wife & I too sick to want to do anything but sit or sleep makes that possible over a three-day weekend.

Are they making finding/joining a friend easier? :(

novicius
April 7th, 2015, 07:38 AM
Nah, that system will never change.

For anyone else lurking there are basically two ways to "Join a Friend":

1. If you haven't logged into Neverwinter: make or join a Party Chat with your team and have only one person log into Neverwinter. That one person can then invite everyone else and they will automatically be routed to the correct Instance number.

2. If you're already logged into Neverwinter: make or join a Party Chat with your team and hit the 'Start' button on your controller. Scroll to 'Social' - 'Friends', highlight your friends' name and hit the green 'A' button (I believe) to Invite them to your Neverwinter group. Back out of this menu back to your Neverwinter UI. Once they've joined you, you'll see an Instance Number next to their name on the left-hand side of the screen. Go back to the 'Social' menu and go down to the 'Change Instance' option. A small menu will pop-up listing all open/available Instances by ID Number. Click on the number matching your buddy and pray it works.

The one way that DOESN'T seem to work well is to both be playing Neverwinter and then just sending a Game Invite via the XBONE Dashboard. Kid & I couldn't get that method to work. :smh: Hopefully it gets patched at some point in the future...

Yes absolutely -- keeping in mind that there is no truly separate offline mode.

You're logging onto their server whether you play it on Steam or XBONE. So you will see other gamers but you have no requirement to play with them except for Dungeon Raids (at which point there is an automated matchmaking system).

Up to level 37 with my Guardian Fighter Half-Ork.

Leveling in this game happens pretty quickly, and even at level 30+ the leveling pace is only slightly slower. Kid leveled up 2 or 3 times in a single evening's play so even for casual gamers it's still fun to progress and build and tweak your 'toon. I've also stopped posting pics because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but the action, the level design and the baddies are varied and cool. Just the full gamut of D&D tropes to deal with (minus a Beholder, I haven't seen one of those yet) and the variety is heavy from area to area. This is what's missing from Destiny, really: bigger variety of areas, missions and baddies.

Neverwinter isn't without its limitations and flaws: framerate does suffer from time to time, the Admin spam is annoying as hell, and disconnects do happen. It's certainly not a First Person Shooter and if that's your bag this isn't the game to scratch that itch. But if you want the RPG out of "MMORPG", this game has it. It plays just fine solo or in a group, great variety, good action, hundreds of missions (honestly GTA Online should take more than just a page from this game) -- and everything can be unlocked for free if you're willing to put the time into it to defeat the RNGesus.

So yeah no more "cautiously happy", I'm openly ecstatic: old-game-but-on-a-new-console aside, Neverwinter is right up there with Destiny & GTA Online on XBONE for me now.  #selldragonagenow

Basically I'm lunging to the front of any fight and marking all enemies to attack me instead of my team (the Guardian Fighter's specialty). The only way you take this much damage is if you've got a damn good healer on your team -- which I did. I don't think I died once on that run!

That was a good set o' adventures. #contentedsigh Definitely worth the price of entry. ;)

Now I'm up to level 43 and the leveling has slowed down quite a bit, which is fine. My gear score is over 4,000+ but I still feel that I'm not paying real good attention to loot drops during group Dungeons. It is entirely possible to outfit your 'toon pretty easily with all-Blue (Rare) gear. I still have entirely too much Green (Uncommon) gear in my Inventory.

Are there any MMORPGs that allow cross-platform play? Is this one of them?

Nope & nope.

This game does not allow for cross platform play. And I'm not sure there are any that do allow for cross platform play. I know I have never heard of any. And I highly doubt there will ever be any Console to PC cross platform gaming.

Avoiding PC gaming due to my computer setup being a tiny laptop perched carefully on the arm of my living room recliner chair :) I get bad enough cricks in my neck just from web browsing.

MS doesn't allow it (aside from Shadowrun on X360), Sony does and that's why there are some cross-platform games between PS3, PS4 and PC.
Plenty of cross-platforming between iOS and Android instead.

EDIT: Final Fantasy 11 and Lost Planet Colonies Edition were both games cross-platforming on PC, PS3 and X360.

I think it's planned for Windows 10 (http://www.polygon.com/2015/1/21/7869323/microsoft-phil-spencer-xbox-one-windows-10-pc-cross-buy-cross-play) though.

Neither Shadowrun nor Lost Planet series are MMORPG's.

Final Fantasy XI: Online (2003) on the PS2 & Windows PC counts as a barely valid answer to Random's question tho'.* :thppt: Further, games that span PS3's & PS4... do they REALLY count as "cross-platform"? Really?? #no

*So the answer is still "nope & nope". :assclown:

Sorry Leon, I didn't even think of that -- well, if it doesn't work you can always take the XBONE back to the store, right? Also, I hope you've got a PHAT PIPE because this game does require some bandwidth to play.

New High Score -- I'm sure that that in the Level 60 games people are posting 10,000,000+ damage totals or something but hey I'm just doing my part to help my team. :D

I guess I should have been more specific that I didn't think there would be any cross platform gaming between console and PC that anyone would give a shit about.

It should be more than possible for it to happen but you can tell the console companies are not allowing it to happen for any decent game.

Leon,it was good before they region locked the store, all you had to do was change to USA or where ever and get a cheaper price.
Now it's a lot harder, but it seems to work for free downloads for some reason.

My pics are hotlinked directly from OneDrive (http://onedrive.live.com).

Here's how you can get some gloriously hotlinkable 1920x1080 pics:

Set up the image you want in Neverwinter.
If you've got Kinect, simply say “Xbox, take a screenshot." If you don't, double-tap your glowing Xbox button on your controller and hit the yellow 'Y' button. (http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/02/23/android-5-0-lollipop-silent-mode-fix/)
Hit your Xbox button to go to the Dashboard (you don't have to back out of Neverwinter to do this).
Load the Upload app (be sure to download this app if you need to first (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/apps/upload-studio-info)) from the Dashboard.
Go into 'My Captures' and select your photo(s).
Hit the 'Start' button and go to 'Share'.
Select the blue OneDrive logo (be sure to download this app to your XBONE first (https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/apps/onedrive)).
The pic(s) will take a few seconds to upload to the OneDrive website.
Set controller down. Pick up PC/laptop/tablet/phone. Browse to onedrive.live.com (http://onedrive.live.com/) and log in.
This looks different depending upon device. On a tablet/phone, click 'Files' on the left-hand side of the website and then click the 'Pictures' icon.
You should have an 'Xbox Screenshots' folder automatically created here. Click it.
Now you should see all of your pics. Click it, it'll open it into a gallery viewer.
At the top of that OneDrive viewer, there is a 'View original' button. Click it.
It will open your pic in 1920x1080 in a new tab in your browser.
Highlight the whole URL (including the 'https://') in the Address Bar and copy it.
Go to your forum of choice.
Type in the code to display an image (BBCode is '').
Paste your NEW URL into that image tag. Delete the 's' in 'https://' and submit the URL prefix as just 'http://'.
Enjoy.

This will work for ANY XBONE game or movie you have running, not just Neverwinter. OneDrive offers you 15GBs for free. You can also upgrade to nearly 10x the space for a small monthly fee (https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-us/plans/) if you want.

Here's hoping you can do this from New Zealand! ;)

Nice! :) I'm going to have to play this game some more! :)

Awesome Value!

Xbox One's first MMO, the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game Neverwinter, has attracted more than 1.6 million players since the game arrived at the end of March.
Publisher Perfect World Entertainment announced the news today, also revealing some initial player statistics, and divulging plans to support the free-to-play game with five free expansions in 2015.

As for the five free expansions, Perfect World isn't saying much about them yet, confirming only that they will be based on the Tyranny of Dragons and Elemental Evil storylines from within the overall Dungeons & Dragons lore. All five will debut later this year, though specific release dates have not been announced.

It's an easy to play game.

You charge through an hour a level, if you're questing.

Replay value might be a bit low though, if you only ever have one story quest to play though.

The Rogue you get through the enemies in the blink of an eye, but the moment your companion takes a dirt nap, and all the monsters start bashing on you, it's splat time.

I think they need to bust out some WAY more interesting classes though. The classes available I think are a bit too uncomplicated, which might be due to the limitations of the controller as compared to keyboard.

Overall, pretty game, quite repetitive. In game instructions aren't super logical, so I am never clear as to if I should be getting things with + power, or + damage, or what.

For a free game though, damn good value.

It'd be nice if they gave a little better idea of where you were supposed to go besides just the glowy path on the ground. Since it can take a minute or two to load at times.

Neverwinter: The Heart of Fire was suggested to me on my dashboard. Odd, I do not remember Neverwinter being available under the free games section and I just browsed the selection last week. Anyway, I am downloading to try it.

Yeah, it is the same old game. Graphics are dated and the system in use is a bit convoluted, but not worse than other games in the same genre.
I'd love to see a more modern approach, I've to say.
And also a different setting, last time I checked it was all Ravenloft galore... I'm playing in the setting at the table with friends (blah), and it's like 20 years since Ravenloft has bored me sick, already.
