Since the draft starts today, figured it would be time for a new thread.

Actually I'm not even following the draft much, except I was hoping the Bucs wouldn't pick Winston, but they did anyway.

I predict another crappy season ahead.

It's been a fun offseason for the Bills.

Marrone walks away.
Bills hire Rex Ryan and Greg Roman
Trade for McCoy
Sign Clay
Keep Hughes

The draft I didn't care for much, but I'm excited about their RB pick in the 5th oddly enough, even though we already have a semi stacked backfield.

Falcons significantly overhauled their otherwise awful defense. Hoping Dan Quinn is the real deal, and he just put many of the right pieces in place to return to contender status!

Hope Beasley and Jarrett show out for Atlanta this year, would give me an excuse to cheer for an NFL team for once.

On Thursday, two women were found dead in an SUV after a car chase on Interstate 20, in Alabama. Police said that Lisa Brown had kidnapped Sandra Barnett from her home on Wednesday. Barnett was the wife of former NFL player Buster Barnett; Brown was his mistress.

I never thought I would see a story featuring a long drive ending with a successful execution associated with the Bills

Da Bears!

Back in Australia we are getting daily headline stores on Jarryd Hayne playing for San Fran.
Today's headline is about his old rugby league team selling shirts with his Giants number and his name (and using his photo on the web page), but without his prior approval. That and stories on why his making the team is a bigger thing than other Aussies who have made NFL teams as punters.
Must run at least 2 stories a day on him!

had a crappy time in my fantasy football league at work so far, 0-3 start and I blame my kicker(s)

Started with Adam Vinateri, got me -1 point for 2 weeks in a row (ESPN FFL) so I switched to what seemed like a good idea at the time, Tampa Bay's kicker, whatever the f- his name is....he misses 3 field goals and an extra point in ONE game!

In week 2 I lost by 2 points, in week 3 I lost by 4 points....all can be blamed on bad kickers....ugh.

I switched again to the Giants kicker for this week, see if my luck turns around.

I understand the mindset. Other teams have run weird plays like that, sometimes just to get the defense to burn a timeout, but sometimes they're actually meant to work. The goal is trick the defense into think you're going to do a throwback play, so they send all but two people to cover the wall of players by the sideline. Then you snap the ball and rely on your guy to get 3 yards in a one-on-one situation.

But the Patriots didn't sell out for the throwback, they spread out very well, so the "center" should have sat on the ball and taken the penalty. He flinched, to the shock of everyone else, and they all look like complete fools.

Lynch and his teammates gathered together and he calmly shook their hands. Apparently the NFL hasn't outlawed this sort of over-the-top tomfoolery yet,
but you've got to imagine Roger Goodell is rounding up the gang and working on something to preserve the integrity of the game.

Baseball is about the anticipation. About strategy. Extremely complex and very drawn out.

21Kid

How is it strategic or complex?

Godson
January 6th, 2016, 09:26 AM
The strategy is all on the front side. The preparation. Planning for every situation, then seeing what the players do and create. In on epost season game this year for the Royals, Ned Yost had each inning broken down batter by batter what he thought they would do against his starting pitching staff and vice versa. He had organized a game plan depending on what was happening and how it was happening. It is easy to explain while watching. Difficult to put into words though.

I'm not going to blame the refs for the Packers' loss yesterday. I feel like there were several missed golden opportunities -- absolutely golden! -- that the Packers should have made, any one of which would have iced the game.

Ah well, they went two games further than I thought they were going to go. :) #gopackgo

Go Broncos!

The helmet discussion above reminds me of the John Madden (I think, please correct me if that's wrong) quote which went something like this:

"Want to make football less violent? Take away their helmets."

While trying to verify that quote online, I found this, which made me chuckle:

"I don't know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath

Microphone may have caused Cobb's punctured lung (https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/microphone-may-caused-cobbs-punctured-181900807.html)

"It was really abnormal what happened," Cobb told Wisconsin-based sports talk show host Bill Michaels. "I punctured a lung. I didn't break a rib and I didn't fracture a rib. It's really abnormal for that to happen.
"But I was mic'd up for the game. I landed flush on my back. The battery pack was on my shoulder pads and I landed flush on my back and we think that possibly could be it but there's no way of proving it."
"I felt fine, I got up from the catch and started walking back to the huddle and it got harder and harder for me to breathe," he added.
"Then it felt like I was going to throw up. I was choking. I was choking on something and then next thing I know I was spitting up blood."

 Ouch!

Superbowl halftime comment: Aqib Talib needs to be benched. And then maybe traded.

Fun game, though, and we're noshing on my signature bacon-wrapped olives and pineapple chunks, with a bit of chili sauce brushed on, and then broiled. Yum - E!

My wife's babyback ribs are still cooking, but they'll be done soon...very soon.

George

Yeah, we need to talk BBQ soon. You're right - there isn't any here, and what they call BBQ here isn't.

Right now people are outside in the streets of our quiet suburban neighborhood hollering and yelling and shooting off fireworks as if it's the fourth of July!

This is fun.

It's funny how the Broncos manage to win games this year without really WINNING them, if that makes sense. It's more like they avoid losing.

I sure enjoyed seeing Newton's jersey get more and more grass-stained as the game went on. My wife is from North Carolina and most of her FaceBook friends are still there. They've been giving her grief for a couple weeks now, but according to her, it sure got quiet on FB soon after the game started.

And I think Cam Newton is great, BTW. I look forward to seeing him win more in the years to come. Peyton is on top of the world right now, and with his 200th win he stuck it to Old Man Favre one more time!

I wonder if he got paid for saying, "I'm gonna drink a lot of Budweiser tonight!" not once, but twice, that I saw, immediately after the game. Not that I care, but I just wondered.

I imagine a lot of people will be wearing orange to work tomorrow around here.

Or he's just really young and flinched in his first Super Bowl, along with most of the other people on his offense (especially his receiver core, which was never that good).

I'm curious why someone would think he's a headcase. Succumbing to the pressure of the biggest game of your career when you're the favorite (people were so excited to tell me it was going to be a blowout by the Panthers before the game started) over a much more experienced competitor is understandable, not headcase-indicating.

I don't think that all that much needs to be read into things.

The team with the best defense in the league won. The same one that hit Tom Brady more times than any QB had been hit since 2006. Patchwork O line, sure, but that patchwork O line had been fairly effective until Denver destroyed if.

I'm glad the Broncos won, but once again a game is ruined for me by bad officiating. A CRITICAL play in the first half was that catch that was reviewed and not called a catch, which it clearly was. One or two plays later they get the strip and score. If Carolina goes and score on that drive instead of giving up 7, we could have had a tie game. I know it was early, and who knows what would have happened. But at the very least, it probably would have been only a one score difference. If that had happened in the 4th quarter with Denver only up by 7, it's all you'd be hearing about today.

Jason
February 8th, 2016, 06:58 AM
It wasn't a catch. The ball hit the ground, and then immediately moved. It would have been a catch if the ball didn't move, as it would have shown the receiver had clear possession/control of the ball.

21Kid
February 8th, 2016, 06:58 AM
Agreed FAF, I thought it was a catch. But, Denver only had a field goal at that point. Carolina would have had the lead. It would have completely changed the game. But, as we saw throughout the whole game, they didn't have much luck on offense. I don't think they would have gotten a touchdown. But, it would have been a much closer game even if they tied with a field goal. They probably panicked being down by 10 and never got their groove back.

Jason
February 8th, 2016, 07:06 AM
Doesn't matter if his hand is under it, if the ball moves after hitting the ground (and in this case, became completely loose), that represents lack of control of the catch. Incomplete.

Just the tip?

I think they're way to picky on what is considered a catch. Even it's in his hand/arm, and moves while he hits the ground, that doesn't mean he has completely lost control of it. They should loosen up on their ruling of what is or isn't a catch.

I totally agree with the inconsistency of how catches are called. I just don't see how it's a catch if the ball touches the ground and immediately moves/becomes lose. I'm fully on board with it being a catch if the ball remains secure in his hand(s).

Eh, my perception of his game performance combined with him bolting from the post-Super Bowl media session was that he's flighty. Yes absolutely he "succumb[ed] to the pressure of the biggest game of [his] career". It wasn't an epic breakdown but IMO it did register on the low end of the Ryan Leaf scale.

But I don't really care enough to debate the point -- do you wish for me to redact my use of the term "headcase"? It was just a flippant comment. I fully admit to not being dialed into either the Carolina Panthers locker room or Cam Newton's noggin. #shrug

It did move... but to me, it seemed like he had full control of it the whole time. It wasn't like it was jostled loose and rolled around on the ground or anything.

For example, if a runner were diving for a first down and the ball moved while he was reaching, it's not an automatic fumble. You can still have control, even if something moves while in your grasp.

I just didn't know if there was more going on, of which I wasn't aware. Considering there is also a recent first round QB that has failed in almost all of his regular season starts, is being seen wearing wigs so he can still party even when he's supposed to be recovering from his first stint in rehab, has the cops coming by his house because he beat his ex girlfriend, refuses to go to rehab again, etc etc, I thought it took more than what I knew of to get people questioning his mental makeup. He's definitely not Mr. "I sat and seasoned behind Favre for years and am never frazzled or emotional at all,"* I'll give you that, but who is?
