I first saw that movie on a 13" color TV in my future wife's apartment. I didn't like it at all.

I have since come to appreciate it for what it is. I think it will stand the test of time.

And to think I thought it could never be edited enough for TV. Now it's on some cable channel every Saturday afternoon.

ICK ...no bacon, please!

No bacon?

Posted that one on a facebook foodie page and some food snob responded with "The thought of all that grease and where it goes during cooking is not very appetizing."

Whatever twit...the only thing I am concerned with is where all that yummy grease is going AFTER it's cooked! :thppt:

Here is a recipe for an old favorite that I had not made in many years, until yesterday - Super Bowl Sunday.

Ingredients:

1 jar of olives
1 can of pineapple chunks
1 jar of Heinz Chili Sauce, or similar
1 lemon
1 box of round toothpicks - the flat kind can be too flimsy

Oh, and I almost forgot...

1 pound of BACON!

You'll also need a baking sheet (large, flat pan like you bake cookies on) and a rack to put on it, sort of like the rack you put your freshly baked cookies on to cool down if you want them crisp instead of soggy. Optional: before you get started, cover the bottom of the tray with aluminum foil to make cleaning up all the bacon grease easier.

You'll also need a sharp knife, a cutting board, a basting brush, oven mitts, and an oven, of course. I like to put some olives and pineapples in small bowls before I get started, so I'm not constantly having to pull them out of their respective retail containers with a spoon, especially since part of the prep work involves handling raw bacon.

Assuming you have "standard size" bacon strips, which are perhaps a foot long, I'd guess, cut them into thirds. I cut the whole stack at one time with two cuts, and then I immediately wash the knife, due to the raw bacon thing and all that.

Stab a short piece of bacon near one end with a toothpick. Then impale an olive, and then wrap the bacon over it and through the toothpick. Then put a pineapple chunk on the toothpick, and then finish with the other end of the bacon.

Done correctly, the bacon will look like the letter S, or perhaps better illustrated as a dollar sign due to the toothpick in the middle, like this: $. Your olive and pineapple go inside the curves of the S.

Lay the finished pieces out on the rack on the cookie tray. Wash your hands, as you are now finished handling raw bacon, at least for now.

Brush some chili sauce or whatever else you like - BBQ sauce, or whatever - on the assembled pieces and then squirt lemon juice all over them. Move an oven rack up so it's perhaps six inches under the broiler heating element inside the oven, and turn the oven on broil.

Slide the tray in under the broiler for around six minutes, or whenever you see the bacon start to brown. Then put on your oven mitts, pull out the searing hot tray without spilling any bacon grease, and carefully flip over each piece to expose the uncooked side. The wooden toothpicks won't be hot, so use those to turn each piece.

Wash your hands again, because you certainly touched some semi-cooked bacon during this process, and then slather on some more chili sauce and lemon juice on the uncooked side.

Put the rack back under the broiler for another six minutes or so. Watch carefully, because the bacon can burn if there are distractions while you're doing this, such as your hometown team winning the Super Bowl.

Pull out the tray when the bacon looks fully cooked and cripsy. Try not to let any bacon grease slosh overboard. Hopefully the rack you put them up on means the snacks are not at all greasy. These are good - no, DELICIOUS - while hot, and they're just as tasty if you put the refrigerator and eat them later, cold.

Bon appetit!

My nearest TJs is 100 miles away. Good thing is I go past it at least once a week. Might have to stop off and finally see what they're about.

They're generally about specialty snack type stuff. Bacon Jam is right up their alley. What they have tends to be really good for the price. For instance, I love smoked salmon, and they have perfectly good salmon significantly cheaper than anywhere else out here. Also, some of their beer is just repackaged more-expensive beer for way cheaper, and they are by far the cheapest place I've found to get Chimay.

On the downside, they never have the home stuff you need, like ziploc bags, paper towels, laundry detergent, etc. They also rarely have all the produce you want. Like, you'll find a great looking bag of apples on the cheap, but there won't be any lettuce. Next week, there will be lettuce, but no lemons.

Oh, also, everyone else shopping there will be zombies. People turn their brains off when they go in there and will wander aimlessly, often directly into you, while staring into space. And the parking lot will be hell on earth (though that's on purpose - they specifically choose places with limited parking because it tends to cost less in rent, hence lower prices). You will, however, walk out with some awesome stuff and be shocked at how little you paid for it if you stick out the idiots that surround you.

The first TJ's I went to was in California. My wife bought some Two Buck Chuck. Or was it Three Buck Chuck by then? I dunno. But, I got a six-pack of Nicaraguan beer in cans for, like $1.50 or something, if I remember correctly. It was too cheap and odd NOT to try while on vacation, and IIRC it tasted awful.

We have TJ's here now and, while I rarely go there, that jar o' bacon has me wanting to drop in and look around. The last time I was there, I noticed some bagged, frozen Chinese entrees that looked just like the kind of Chinese food you get in those medium to low-end Chinese restaurants in the US, like the ones in shopping centers and next to convenience stores. Not serious, chef-type restaurants, but those cheap places with the lunch combo specials. I've always suspected many of those places just serve whatever the restaurant supply companies sell them because it's so similar everywhere you go - pepper steak, General Tso's Chicken, hot & sour soup, and stuff like that. Maybe it's the same thing in those bags at Trader Joe's?

I know I should not have General Tso's Chicken standing by in my freezer for whenever I get a jones for sodium and MSG and sticky-sweet breading, but hey, this is the bacon thread, after all - the thread for gustatorial sinning. :D

Uncured bacon jam is not a hoax. I found myself near a Trader Joe's today and went in to look around.

They have it in the "spreadables" section, with peanut butter and similar things.

I haven't opened the jar, so no reviews just yet, but the product does exist!

Wicks Manor bacon is awesome.

September 27th, 2017, 01:20 PM
2/3 cup sliced green onions
2/3 cup mayo
2/3 cup sour cream
4 teaspoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons dijon mustard
2 tablespoons minced fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dry dill weed
1 pound tiny cooked (or cook your own) shelled shrimp
8 slices of bacon
sourdough bread

Mix together everything but the bacon and bread. Toast bread, cook bacon. Chop bacon. Make sandwiches.

I should have posted this before summer, as it's a great "evening after a hot day" meal.

I only discovered bacon jam a couple of weeks back. I’m quite upset that no-one had pointed out its existence until now.
