Since we have random threads for other things, figured it would be good to have one here also...lots of announcements at E3 just happened and I didn't see many posts about it.

Final Fantasy VII is getting a remake, and I'm very excited, though I have a feeling it will be too different for some fans and they'll complain anyway.

Shenmue III also coming out after being sucessfully funded on Kickstarter. I really enjoyed the first one on Dreamcast, but never played the sequel since I've never owned an Xbox. I re-watched some playthrough videos of the first one the other day, and forgot some of the more tedious parts of it...I kinda wish they'd remake the first two games with modern, updated everything, streamlined a bit, I mean it's now basically being made on consoles from THREE different manufacturers.

The tedious stuff was important! Having to walk to get to the bus! Doing your job driving the forklift! You never knew when a story beat was going to happen, you were just living your life. If everything you did just moved the story forward, it would be a totally different game.

I really thought I should get paid for that Forklift crap, I remember that one quite well...really felt like work.

You did get paid. In video game money. Which you could spend at the arcade, or on food for the little kitten.

I'm stupid excited for FF7, but definitely fearful of what they're going to change. I really enjoyed the battle system and materia system, and I could see both of those changing due to outsmarting themselves.

Yes it had a few in the arcade, plus darts and other games to help you with the in-game fights.

There was an arcade with retro games, and also games at the bar/lounge at the docks.

It's on sale on xbone for $4 and I couldn't say no. I have very good memories of this game - the style, the action, the story. I remember by buddy and I camped around my computer for hours banging our heads against the perpetual instant death scenarios and the joy that came from nailing a sequence of actions on the first try. It was so different than every other game of the time - quite a revolution.

I only played a few minutes of it last night but honestly it holds up way better than I thought it would. The highly styling graphics help and the "remastering" is to good effect. I only encountered one "WTF am I supposed to now!!" moment, but it was more familiar than frustrating. :)

Hard to guess whether I'm enjoying it from a sense of nostalgia or because game play legitimately still good, but whatever. It's $4 and neat. :)

Fellow 3DO owner as well. And I loved R&T Need for Speed.

My 3DO games:
Gex
FIFA International Soccer (supports 6 controllers!)

Road & Track presents The Need for Speed
Road Rash (remake -- had the original on SEGA Genesis)
Samurai Shodown
Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Supreme Warrior (2-discs)
Syndicate

These games pre-dated the original Playstation by two years in some cases. :hard:

Best magazine cover faux pas I can think of is back in '97 when I picked up a copy of Official Playstation Magazine with Parappa The Rapper on the cover. MY roommate's son who was in the car with me looked at the cover and said "Parappa The Raper, what kind of fucking game is this?" I pointed out the extra P and he shut up and promptly sunk low into the burgundy leather seat of my '87 Olds Trofeo.

So I buzzed through Arkham Asylum and started up my playthrough of Arkham City.... such a good game. But I encountered something really weird yesterday (7/4).
In the basement of the courthouse is a man in his cell called "Calendar Man". I approached him and he started talking about having bombs to set off to get him free and how that would be appropriate for Independence Day. And some more 4th of July references after that. :twitch:

Basically, he does that for every big holiday. Just a weird coincidence my first interaction with him in the game was on a holiday.

In the spirit of random video games (as this doesn't appear to be purely news related), anybody else pick up anything interesting from the latest Steam sale?

I've found myself surprisingly addicted to Cook, Serve, Delicious: one of those time management games but I guess is an updated remake of an early Playstation title. I usually like these types of games as a way to pass the time for some reason and this one is pretty much the cream of the crop.

Also picked up Grim Fandango Remastered, Homeworld Remastered, Valkyria Chronicles (so far hasn't totally held my interest, but the graphical style is absolutely fantastic, looks like super high quality hand drawn animation but is all rendered), Dirt Rally (which I still haven't installed since I don't have my wheel hooked up at the moment), Project CARS, and X-Plane 10.

GreatScawt
July 5th, 2015, 12:09 PM
Yeah the Steam sale and other competition really had me pull out the wallet just because "goddamn that's cheap".

On Steam I got:
Metro Redux Bundle @ $10
The Talos Principle @ $14 - SUPER good and underrated IMO. I have to play it some more, but it's a fantastic first person puzzler like Portal. And it has a really cool philosophical story structure behind it.
Hotline Miami @ $1.50
Please Don't Touch Anything @ $2.50 - this is a really unique, clever game. Reminds me of a Kongregate game, which probably isn't the best compliment. But it's fun.
Dirt Rally @ ~$26.

And then on Greenmangaming I picked up Arkham Asylum and Arkham City for $5 each plus another 25% off. Couldn't pass that up. I actually threw in Arkham Knight because that was also discounted and would complete the trilogy.

July 5th, 2015, 12:14 PM
I'd been wondering about Talos Principle but knew basically nothing about it. I'll have to remember that for the next sale.

I got Antichamber (another portal-esque puzzler but way harder and weirder) and Kill The Bad Guy on either Humble or GOG, I forget which site.

I very highly recommend Antichamber. It's still on sale for a couple of bucks. Or, a couple dollars as you guys would say it, since I paid in USD.

Rare White Ape

True, but it was the omission of the word 'of' in that phrase that I was hoping to highlight.

I've noticed it a couple of times.

KillerB
July 6th, 2015, 01:18 PM
I'd say it gets used interchangeably here. It usually comes out of my mouth as "a coupla bucks."

Rare White Ape
July 6th, 2015, 03:18 PM
Yeah I'm guilty of that too, but I'd never type it in a formal situation. It's definitely an American thing to formally drop the 'of'. I've seen it in car and video game articles.

Me randomly cruising Steam, I spot a game, the game intrigues me, I search it on Google, I find a review which tells me it's passable (not overwhelmingly positive like Steam tells me) but hey at least I land on the game's website and find its really sweet soundtrack.

Doesn't everyone?

I tend to justify my Steam purchases based on how many packets of chips or McDonald's hamburgers I would buy for the same price. If it's more than two, I begin to think a bit harder about whether I want it.

It's very rare nowadays for me to spend more than $20 on a game. I save that sort of money for console disc purchases, and my most played Steam title is Kerbal, which only cost me $17.

Stupid Steam sales taking my money a little bit at a time

For you space game peeps, you might want to check out Rebel Galaxy. It's kept me interested in playing regularly for the past month, which is a very rare thing for me with any game now.... XCOM EW Long War being the exception but that's getting off topic.

Anyway, quick description would be Elite Dangerous "Arcade" meets Battlestations Midway/Pacific. Essentially most of the things you can do in Elite you can do in RG (combat, trade, pirate, smuggle, etc.) but the scale is much smaller, it's much more colorful, is played in 3rd person view, is designed to be played with a game pad and is not a "sim" in any way, shape or form. The Battlestaions aspect is that you maneuver strictly on a 2d plane, have broadside weapons to fire & can assign specific firing traits for individual turrets and your wingman and most of the battles play out like a Pacific theater WWII naval battle.

It's strictly a single player game and there is a story line to play out but it's designed to be a sandbox game in the end as the "Galaxy" you play in is randomly generated each time you start a new game. There are different factions to align or war with and a healthy trade economy you can influence if you wish etc. Exploration is a definite afterthought though. I do like the art & ship design a lot and the game play is very easy to pick up... again not a sim by any stretch but I think it's rather fun.

How long this fun will last it's hard to say but I can see playing it through a couple more times for no other reason then to say be a pirate the whole time or simply to get in the good graces of a different faction. There are a couple of ships that are only available if you're aligned with a specific faction.

So if any of that sounds interesting you might want to take the plunge. It was all of $17 when I got it at launch but I think it's only $20 regularly, on Steam btw. Should be available for the PS4/Xbone early next year I believe.

I should also say that it's meant to have a very "Firefly" like vibe to it and I guess it sort of does but that is mostly expressed by the wild west/rock & roll soundtrack they have for the game. However, a really great feature they implemented into the launcher is that you can add your own pool of music for specific subsets of the game play. Five to be specific being the Title Screen, Ambient, Idle, Combat and in Space Stations. As one who still always listens to my own music while gaming this is a fantastic option.

I'll check it out when it is released for Xbone.

I tried Gems of War this week. It's a free game, so I guess I can't complain. It's like the bastard child of Puzzle Quest and Candy Crush. I think it will get old quick though.

The wife ordered The Witcher 3 and Mad Max for the PS4 from Best Buy yesterday. She wanted to get Mad Max when it came out, but I told her to hold off until it was discounted since reviews were somewhat mixed. Both games ended up being $20 each after the Black Friday sales and her Best Buy Gamers Club discount, so Mad Max was obtained for probably what it's worth, and The Witcher 3 will probably end up being a great game for that price.

Hahaha, this is great!

I think it's great because there's been some hoopla in the games media this year about game review embargoes, mostly from UbiSoft but also from Bethesda. From memory, Ubi knew that AC:Unity was going to be terrible at launch so to protect their earnings made sure that nobody could read a review casting this much-hyped game into the sea before gamers dropped their hard-earned on it, lest they find out themselves that it's terrible and not waste any money.

So I think if I was editor of a popular gaming news site like Kotaku (which has been allegedly blacklisted by the two publishers above for, you know, reporting gaming news) I'd go full-smart arse and not review a game until it was 12 months old and actually worthy of any time.

Always fancied giving The Elder Scrolls Online a try but haven't yet been able to commit? Here's hoping you have some free time this weekend as Bethesda is giving you the chance to try before you buy.

From Thursday, December 10 until Monday, December 14, 2015, you'll be able to download the full game client and sample the game on PC/Mac or Xbox One (or both, I guess).

For Xbox One you'll need a live Gold subscription, and from 3am PST you'll be able to download The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited client for free

Finally tried it. Wow, the voice is annoying. I almost immediately set the voice level to zero. I disagree that it has been a thinking game. I've done the first two chapters so far and it's simply been "Look at the eye and try to figure out what direction you need to move the stick." You think it looks good? I think it looks like I'm moving (slowly) through a Sketch Up drawing. The environments are rudimentary. If you're going to have paintings on the walls, don't just repeatedly use the same four in every room, sometimes more than once. I'll probably finish it, but I think it's... weak.

I was a Prime member for the first couple of years, when it was still around $60/yr. if memory serves but ended up cancelling because I really wasn't using any of the benefits. I order something from them maybe every 6 weeks and never need it in 2 days and maybe streamed video all of 3 or 4 times in that 2 years. Now of course with the impending Clarkson/Hammond/May show upcoming I feel I'm going to need to subscribe again just for that <sigh>.

So what's my point? They had a good sale for Prime back in October that I missed and was pissed about but there's a new weekend sale for Prime (http://tinyurl.com/gwqsd5d), not as good as the previous one but still better then $100 in case anyone's interested.

Number 692 in an ongoing series of things that everyone has known for a long time, except me:

If you are tidying up the room where the kids have been playing Xbox 360, and while picking up game controllers, you accidentally press the big silver button in the center on one of them, not only does the controller light up, but the Xbox turns itself on as well.

Interesting. This means one could turn on the Xbox and play games without ever getting up from the couch - or heck, getting out of bed, for that matter - as long as there's a remote control for the TV nearby.

No wonder Americans are so fat.

I want to know what the big deal is. Surely you can just switch to your X360 or PS3 to play it, and it will be a better experience on native hardware.

I finally got around to playing Pneuma. It was a fun 45 minutes. Though, I would have been pissed if I paid money for such a short game.

I like puzzle games like Myst and the Portal games so it was worth it to play it for free.

Which reminds me, we need a new Portal or Myst game. Do the Myst style games even exist anymore? If they do I'm guessing they are all on PC.

GreatScawt

I might be wrong (I could easily Google it in the time it takes me to write this) but there was a Myst anniversary HD remake recently, wasn't there?

And there are plenty of first-person action puzzle games on the market now that Portal is a success. PC and console.

One I recommend is Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist (yes that is its title) which is free, short and actually very very funny. It's developed by the guy who made The Stanley Parable (another one worth playing). Another one is The Static Speaks My Name (also free, and creepy!). Another is The Talos Principle, CAT Interstellar (currently on Early Access for $2.99) and you've probably heard of The Witness. The Witness is good, but I find the developer Jonathan Blow and his games to be very pretentious, so I dunno. It's a personal issue for me! I highly recommend Antichamber, because of how difficult it is.

If you want more Portal, look up Portal Stories: Mel, a free game on Steam if you own Portal 2, developed by fans with Valve's blessings. It's really good for a glorified mod.

Get on Steam and look up any of those titles and scroll right down to the 'You might also like:' section, there's heaps of suggestions there.

I wonder what I'll get...

In celebration of its sixth birthday, Green Man Gaming is selling a mystery bundle for six cents. The bundle consists of one game, and the mystery has to do with the fact that you don't know what game you're going to get. Six cents isn't much of a gamble to find out.

I tried my luck and ended up with Steel Storm: Burning Retribution, a game that is now in my Steam library and will likely stay unplayed forever. The top few comments on the mystery bundle page indicate that other people got American Truck Simulator, Bridge Constructor, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Some good variation there!

The process begins with a new class of toys known as Creation Crystals. Tuned to one of the ten different elements—Life, Undead, Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Magic, Tech, Light and Dark—placing a Creation Crystal on the game’s portal begins the character creation process.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is making the jump to current-gen consoles this week, Activision has announced.

Starting today, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 are available digitally for PS4 via the PlayStation Store and for PC via Steam. Additionally, both games will be available for Xbox One owners via the Xbox Games Store on July 28. :D yay!!!

While each game can be purchased individually for $40, Activision is also offering a Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Bundle that gets you both games for $60. :twitch: really? :(:(:( My son was just playing UA2 on the 360 last weekend. I guess we'll keep playing it there. :smh:

I loved Ultimate Alliance, though I never played the second one as it was really hard to get hold of over here for some reason. I've been checking out reviews and it seems that the PC versions are poop from a butt. Also - £32 each? Nooooooooooooooooope.

21Kid
July 26th, 2016, 01:21 PM
It was decent... A little watered down. But, I thought it was pretty good.

And there were some really weird character choices. I don't even know who Penance (http://marvel.com/universe/Penance_(Robert_Baldwin))was before this game (still don't). And Songbird... :erm: really? And only the Nanite version of Nick Fury, there's no option for his normal costume. :smh:

Also duh...

In both cases, you won't mistake these games as modern ones--their visuals aren't up to par with something you'd expect to see released in 2016. They do look better than the original versions (which were released in 2006 and 2009, respectively), though you're going to be disappointed if you had your expectations set high.

The more I see online about the Nintendo Sony PlayStation dealio, and what people ON THE INTERNET are able to do with it, the more I find it to be a totally bizarre and incredible situation.

One guy finds the mythical beast in his parent's attic, nek minnit people are developing games for it because the BIOS has been copied and turned into an emulator.

Theoretically the game could be burned to a CD and played on the actual hardware. I want to see that happen.

Today I stumbled upon a cheap Steam title called Russian Car Driver and it was down from 99 to 69 Cent and it only had positive reviews - although it was an Android port.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/566990

I expected it to be cheesy and entertaining but it is simple and entertaining.
Despite being an port from Android it`s a solid game engine and even the controls are good - but there is no gamepad support.

Game Modes:

- Freeride Mode
Follow the story of a guy in the russian countryside, complete missions, gain XP and improve your car stats.
- Drag Racing
- Drifting
- Parking
Reach the parking spot in time and avoid the cones.
- Rally
Time trial with checkpoints.
- Racing Mode
Checkpoint race against two other opponents.

Features:

- drive a Lada Samara (later with NOS)
- AT/MT
- optional driving aids
- Weather
- Working lights
- 3 camera views inclduding hood and cockpit view
- Car damage
- Car can get dirty or clean again
- steering with keyboard only, menus with mouse
- 7 different radio stations
- russian countryside with traffic and authentic russian vehicles

I got both. My Summer Car is everything but intuitive more like those outdated adventure games where you got absolutely no clue what and how to do.
Jalopy is still buggy - I just started over after I passed a few updates and after 15 minutes it crashed again.
There is no quicksave or autosave during the game and so all my time was wasted again. :(

So better wait or wait until you see them in a bundle or on offer.

Probably doesn't need its own thread, but I finally hooked up the Steam Link I bought during the Thanksgiving Steam sale. A little annoying that I can only wake it up with the Steam Controller as far as I can tell, but the actual streaming works brilliantly. I have it going over 802.11n right now and it's fast enough to play fighting games over the streaming connection. There's the tiniest bit of lag, but I can only tell because the PC screen moves slightly before the TV one does. It doesn't seem to affect my playing at all (though I'm also not the type to count frames on fighting games).

It's great for playing something like Fallout on the TV.

THIS is a bundle.

THE FREEDOM BUNDLE

https://www.humblebundle.com/freedom

It's a flat fee of $30

100% of it is going to charity in response to the idiotic immigration ban that Trump attempted to lump upon the world

Humble is also matching the first $300,000 and donating that as well

The three charities are ACLU, MSF and IRC

That's the important info.

I haven't mentioned the games yet. It is the greatest collection of indie gems that I have ever seen. I have already bought, played, or pirated a fair chunk of the games in the list, so I know that a lot of them are highly recommended, and I recommend them to you all.

Technology-wise it's quite awesome. I love it's features. It handles everything you need it to and then some, but doesn't soak up too many resources to allow a smooth gaming experience.

But fuck Steam for the almost completely hands-off approach to Greenlight, a thing which has turned 99% of the Steam store into a wasteland of shit.

Fuck Steam for the proliferation of dodgy side-businesses that engage in gambling (refer to the CS:GO controversy of last year), scams, and giving away free games in exchange for good reviews.

Fuck Steam for allowing developers and publishers to take money for what are often essentially pre-alpha builds of games under the guise of early access, with no guarantee that they'll eventually deliver a complete game, or that it will be any good.

And fuck Steam because Valve still hasn't made Half-Life 3. And also fuck it because of my pile of shame.

I did hear that they're killing Greenlight because it had turned into what they were trying to avoid in the first place, so it'll be interesting to see where that goes, and I think I've only bought one "early access" title (I think Dirt Rally was early access). But yeah, I guess I treat it the same way I treat most of today's gaming world. I can't be arsed with the online part of most of it, I rarely pre-order games in the era of digital downloads since those don't sell out, and prefer to wait until there are decent reviews or recommendations from friends before I buy anything, so Steam works just about perfectly for me.

Funny you mention this. Wife's colleague ordered some concert tickets by mail. She never got them, so she asked for them to be re-sent, which was what happened, and they got sent new ones. They then turned up at the venue and there were people (presumably their neighbours) making a fuss trying to get in using the original tickets, which had been delivered to another mailbox in their apartment complex by mistake. The concert staff apparently said something like "You have 2 options. The first is for us to call the Police, in which case you will all miss the concert. Or the 2 of you who have the tickets that were clearly sent to the wrong address and person can go home and let the other people in. Your call."

My wife's colleague and (I think) her husband thoroughly enjoyed the concert, although I guess it's not great knowing that you some of your neighbours are dishonest bastards.

I'm confused by the term 'remastered' when it comes to these Turok releases. On it's face it looks like the same polygon and texture quality, smoothed out for higher res displays.

animalica
March 1st, 2017, 11:28 AM
I don`t know how I could have missed both games back in the days because I switched from the PC to the PSX with NFS3 which was released later.

But I bought the remastered Turok 1 and I was totally surprised.
It supports even my 32:9 resolution and it runs perfect and also the gameplay is fun - it must have been a blast back in the days compared to Unreal 1 and Half-Life 1.

It doesn`t feel and play like an old DOS game which runs in Dosbox it feels like a Windows title.

You can remove the fog but then the gameplay sucks because you can see the enemies from miles away, so you play it totally different than with a limited sight.

Here are some comparisons between the original release and the improved Turok 1:

Jason
March 1st, 2017, 12:43 PM
Yeah that video doesn't really sell me on remaster... It's a bit brighter, a bit crisper, and the draw distances improved. To me a remaster should be higher res textures and polygon counts, and dynamic lighting, etc.

(I'm just bitching about the definition of 'remaster' though)

animalica

They combined the N64 and PC version and remade it into a new engine with some slight improvements in graphics and gameplay.
The only negative thing about it is that 20 Dollars/Euros is too high for such graphics - but I but it for ~7 Euros while it was on sale and then it`s okay again.
And with Turok 2 they will do the same.

It`s not like Half-Life 1 which was rebuilt into Black Mesa with sometimes totally different map sections:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDL138ZXFIA

Or the old Shadow Warrior with the Duke Nukem engine which is also available as a Classic Redux version with slightly improved graphics and also as an up to date game and a successor with actual graphics.

Pfffff what the fuck?

http://press-start.com.au/news/nintendo/2017/03/10/rime-will-cost-double-price-nintendo-switch-australia/

AU pricing for RiME will be $30 on PC/PS4/XB1 in May and $60 on Switch a few months later. Not good.

And what makes it even harder to swallow is that Tantalus, the developer who is contracted to do the Switch port of the game (also known for doing the Twilight Princess HD conversion for Wii U) is a developer based in Melbourne.

Although, check this out: in the US RiME will cost $30 for the three and $40 on Switch, making the $30 version for us by far the cheapest when you factor in exchange rates.

Kotaku reports that it's "unclear" why it's costing more on Switch, against speculation that the cost of manufacturing Switch game cards is a lot more expensive than DVD or Blu-Ray.

UPDATE: The incorrect pricing was sent through by the publisher. The PS4/XB1 version will cost $59.95, the PC*version will*cost $49.95 and the Nintendo Switch version will cost $79.95.
