FWIW, there's a post reporting button: shaped like a little triangle with an exclamation point. :)

Three people used it. ;)

I reported this in one of the spam topics, but i'm sure vBulletin should have a way to counter spam effectively like the custom profile fields idea for phpBB.
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2122696

Custom profile fields (with questions/answers that can't be Googled quickly) have stopped 99% of spambots registering in my car club forums and GT forums. I was looking at the Who's online the other day, then later on that day/week, and saw that a guest (from China, or one of the regular spambot countries) was registering each time.

But no new member ever appeared, as they couldn't get through. :finger:

On my forums i have two (plus admin activation of new members) antispam measures (or more) in the registration screen;

ANTISPAM: Type in the second bunch of numbers below: *
540 457 785 369
(anything other than 457 entered will epicly fail)

ANTISPAM:: *
Is 'house' spelled correctly here: 'houwse'
(drop down box, with 'yes' highlighted, as the first option in boxes is usually what the bots would choose)

And have a similar numbers one on my car club forums (different numbers) and this one too;

Copy and paste the text, BETWEEN the asterixes, into the box: **CoOkIeS aR3 aw3SomE**:
This question is a means of preventing automated form submissions by spambots.

If vB can do this sort of thing, say goodbye to spambots. :)

Russ is going to be very annoyed when he wakes up.

That's one way of putting it.

Is there a way to stop all automatic user registration for now?

Yeah, this.

Just have a human verify all new memberships and email addresses.

Kchrpm

I like Skyline's ideas better, so Russ or whoever doesn't have to potentially wade through a metric ton of bot crap to find genuine people.

Both will happen, I think. Moderated registration is the easiest. *flips switch*

Couple of the spam accounts still look to be logged in. How is that possible?

Kchrpm
January 20th, 2014, 10:53 AM
I believe vB allows them to be logged in but they can't do anything other than view.

Random
January 20th, 2014, 11:38 AM
Actually, they can't even see anything. :) I think they still show up on the active list because I set the login timeout to be pretty lengthy.

Good work.

And to think I clicked the report button because you might not have noticed the spam.
Next bloody thing the forum was full and I couldn't find non spam.

Admin activation is a good way to stop them from posting, but it doesn't stop them from registering, whereas the custom profile fields (and whatever vB does) stops them from registering.

Activation is pretty much a backup incase they do get past the antispam stuff, and it means they'll still never be able to post. :cool:

And yeah, checked the Arcade last night and there were 4 and a quarter pages full of spam. :eek:

If anyone has personal friends in Russia or China that want to register, they'll have to contact me directly. .ru and .cn are banned from registering. :)

Certainly lock them out.
Maybe even check twice on the ones who already snuck in.

Heh, 51 people onine, 2/3rds are guests. I may implement one other mod which renames the register.php page. Hmm.
