A San Diego woman who was texting and chatting on her cell phone just before her Toyota Prius slammed into the back of an idling car on an Orange County freeway, killing the 23-year-old driver, was sentenced Friday to six years in prison.

I had not heard that they were actually doing a harsh sentences thing for people who kill while texting.

Bromberg said that when he offered the plea deal, he wasn’t aware of the new evidence presented at the second trial that showed Nicolas sent 13 text messages in the 15 minutes before the crash. He said that had he known, he would not have offered the same plea deal.

On the freeway no less.

Sounds similar to what a person would get for driving drunk and killing a person.

As it should be, at least. In some ways it's worse, as the Judge mentioned. When you're drunk, you're impaired, not just when driving, but sometimes when making the decision to drive. When you text, you make a completely conscious decision to not pay attention to the road.

Hah. Yesterday afternoon I was in Lawrence (just before the first home football game of the season) and watched someone in front of me driving a subaru with missouri plates, take a deep swig and then toss an empty bud light can out the window. It appeared that his passenger then handed him another.

Yeah, that's one thing about the whole "Texting while driving" It needs a better name. Facebook/Instagram/iTunes/Snapchat/Tinder/Maps (other than following directions)/Fruit Ninja/whatever else the kids use these days is all the same.

It's thanks to examples that OP posted, that people who glance at their phones even while stopped at traffic lights will get fined equally to those who are on the phone in any capacity while driving.

I'm guilty of it and I do it all the time. What time is it? Where is my GPS sending me? Sometimes I'll activate Siri to Shazam a song on the radio and it requires nothing more than holding the button down for a few seconds. It's not exactly rocket science and no different to adjusting the volume or the A/C, which is perfectly legal.

I'm all for people being punished if they cause any sort of harm but it's those few who ruin it for the rest of us who haven't crossed that line.
