Saw a new Cherokee in the wild--not a fan of the rear end styling. :|

You are not alone, but I'm not in the camp. I really like the new Cherokee from all angles. It's different but still clearly a Jeep.

I've been seeing the same matte red NSX all over town. Kinda neat looking - I'd never considered a matte color for a car.

I think if Jeep had put the license plate in the hatch instead of the bumper I'd like it more. There's too much space: http://www.autoweek.com/galleryimage/CW/20130327/NEWYORK/327009995/PH/0/4/ny-jeep-cherokee-rear.jpg

They probably did it because the cost of molding multiple bumpers is cheaper than stamping multiple hatches, and this way it can accommodate a variety of license plate sizes.

Comically, I think the new Cherokee may be the first instance of someone copying Kia's styling -

Oh yeah...

I had the Fiero up to 95mph today, the fastest it's gone since I've had it. It's surprisingly solid at those speeds, though the low spring rates really start to display their inadequacies. I'm not going to do anything about that as they are on the edge of tolerable for daily driver duty. Anyway, while hauling ass down the freeway, I got passed by a W124 500E. I don't know how fast he was going, but he got in front of me right quick and then proceeded to exit the freeway from the left lane, jetting across four lanes of traffic. I didn't mind, because in a car like that he deserves such privileges. Still a fine, fine looking car. Maybe I'll pursue one when I'm done with the XJR.

I was thinking about those, too. :D.

I was behind a Tribeca today ; Subaru put the plate in the middle of the hatch.

I saw a Porsche 924 S2 or something in the parking lot of canadian tire last night, it had really dark tinted windows and I think the guy was just parking there to smoke crack or something. Toronto is a world class city.

It's been slim pickings in NYC this weekend. Only a very attention starved guy revving the tits off a Maserati Granturismo in heavy times square traffic. A similar story was told on fifth avenue as some minor celeb or other got into a ferocious sounding mate grey Gallardo. Both sightings beaten only by the six four lmpala cruising down sixth ave.

Yesterday:

1973 Chevelle Laguna S-3 - mint condition, green-gold metallic with a black vinyl top.
Buick Reatta - red.

Today:

1964 Ford Falcon Ranchero - copper/bronze with a black vinyl top.
Buick Reatta - white.

Two Reattas in two days!

Wow, I haven't seen a Laguna S-3 in years.
Reattas seem oddly common around here for some reason- I see them on a really regular basis. What a weird vehicle, I'm sure the development is a strange story. I can't believe anybody at gm thought they would sell enough to make their money back.

Quite a few Osh Kosh plow trucks. Those only seem to come out when the weather has been really bad, like it has been around here. There is just something about the Osh Koshi that makes them seem way more intimidating than the normal plow truck.

At the Starbucks 1/4 mile from where I am now, I've seen an FF, AMG Black, GT-R (all three at the same time), and a 458. I've only been here a week.

The FF and GT-R Seem to be regulars, as I see them every time I drive by.

Saw a DB9 on my travels today, and a GT3. Apparently people here like toys.

 There's loads of wildly interesting/wildly expensive cars in Irvine every Saturday morning at the local Cars and Coffee. Crazy rare/odd cars and different ones every week. I saw a red Toyota Paseo convertible coming home from work yesterday, not exactly something one sees everyday. Maybe they hang out with the people who own the early 90s Celica and Mitsubishi 3000GT convertibles running around town.

I followed a BMW i3 on the M25 for a while yesterday. It's a strange looking thing, especially from the rear, and being kind of orange and black does it no favours. It was keeping up with most of the traffic at usual motorway speeds (85ish mph). The guy driving it looked a little uncomfortable but he seemed pretty tall and was sort of hunched over the wheel a little.

On Friday I tailed a car I haven't seen much less thought about in near 20 years... an E36-based AC Schnitzer S3. I don't think it was the later-variety CLS as it didn't have the semi-boxed rear flanks, but still a pretty special car.

They sometimes get a loaner and use it mostly for "public relations"
Ie park it and have people come to look at it.

I doubt it's cleared to do a chase.

Porsche or othe car companies are happy to loan the cars for free just to get there cars seen.

Freude am Fahren
March 4th, 2014, 07:02 PM
Yeah, it looks a bit too bling/luxurious for a Turbo. But then that's the 991 in general. I think the rims are too big even on the standard model.

Also, kinda related to this topic, I was watching "National Security", a Martin Lawrence/Steve Zahn movie from last decade that takes place in LA. At one point they try to commandeer a vehicle. That vehicle: Opel Speedster!/Vauxhall VX220! WTF?

If you weren't already aware, Deloreans are often painted as a result of previous body damage. Even if you straighten out the body panels after they get hit, you will always be able to see stress marks in the bare metal where it was bent, so sometimes the only option short of a new panel is to paint the car.

The sun is out on a bank holiday weekend in west London, which means amongst the sea of reliable upmarket German coupés is the occasional "I bought this because I love it" car.

Mini Moke - Absolutely showroom fresh. Two young guys blatting around Chiswick. Passenger looked a bit worried - no seatbelts and nothing to hold on to round the corners!
Two Merc SLSs
Capri 280i Brooklands, again minter than a mint thing.
Three new Maser Quattroportes in the supermarket car park. One Granturismo. Upmarket family cars but you've got to give props for not choosing a black BimmerMerc like the rest of the Jones'.
A Renault Twizzy. In the electric charging bay at the same car park. Makes a nice change to see an electric vehicle in there rather than the same prick's M6 vert over and over.

OK, so I need help with a sighting today. I was behind an older 60s European roadster that I could not identify. The rear had angled fenders and tail lights that slanted downward as they moved toward the center of the car, before going horizontal for the trunk lid. There was a circle badge on the trunk lid, and the rear bodywork had a badge saying "2000". My initial guess was a Triumph or Lancia, but it doesn't seem to match the model I was thinking of.

EDIT: I figured it out just now: Fiat 124 Spyder. It was not in great condition, but it was being driven.

While bicycling last Sunday, May 25, between Winterbourne and my turn-off at Hunsberger Road, I must have been passed by most of the Corvette Owners' Club of Kitchener-Waterloo, or something. All mostly following one another, except for the occasional interloper.

Mostly C5's and C6's, but I did see one split-window C2, and a couple of others without the split.

A few C3's, including a silver one which caused me to wonder whether it was the one which had been given as a graduation present to the rich kid in my high school class.

Saw a Krypton Green Elise on the highway driving right near an early Viper convertible in yellow. Sadly I was not driving the Elise, so I was unable to initiate the obligatory Lotus circle jerk that must ensure whenever two previously unacquainted Lotus owners encounter one another.

Interestingly though, the car didn't seem that small just seeing it pass by on the highway. At least no smaller than the Viper. I'm not sure if the color is just that loud, or if the styling seems to make it look bigger than it is. Or maybe the Viper is smaller than I imagine it being.

I simply cannot imagine these cars being anything approaching affordable to maintain. The 1000 mile inspection on the GTS was $1200 - and it's literally nothing more than an inspection. Seems the one to have is the 3.2. The early cars are slow, and the Mondial t requires the engine to come out for the timing belt replacement. The 3.2 has the 260 hp engine from the 328, and all the servicing can be done with the engine in the car.

Considering I'm not anywhere near the driver Bryan is, the driving experience for me is the sights, the sounds, and the smells, along with the driver interface. I wouldn't win an autocross even if you gave me a cheater car.

The one issue I'd have with the Mondial would be the floppy chassis in the cabrio; I definitely notice that sort of thing. But lowish horsepower by modern standards would actually be a good thing; I could wind it out longer and listen to that glorious exhaust note without worrying about losing my license.

As I've gotten older, I've realized that what matters to me in the driving experience no longer coincides with the auto-journo or racer set. I do still really enjoy communicative steering, a pleasant gear change, and a firm brake pedal, but nothing other than the maintenance costs would put me off an old school Ferrari.

The Challenger is, unless Mazda ever introduces a new RX-7, likely to be the newest car I ever buy. In a lot of aspects of my life, I've learned to take it easy, and cars are no exception. I still prefer a manual transmission, but for the connection to the machine; automatics are usually faster and more fuel efficient on new cars.

At this point, my next vehicle purchase is as likely to be a Hudson Hornet, straight-8 Buick, or 61-62 Cadillac as it is to be an FC Turbo II, FD, or S2000. There are a lot of different ways to enjoy an automobile. My days of hooning on the streets are over (aside from the occasional burnout or 100+ open road run in the desert in the Challenger), and I ain't shit on the track.

Nothing a Mondial or Ferrari 308 does wrong would be a hinderance to me - other than horrific maintenance costs. Even the purchase price is starting to look like a bargain compared to air-cooled 911s. They're the latest classic car bubble. When a nice 911SC was under $20k, a $40k 308 seemed a bit much, but those SCs are pulling high $20ks and the Carrera 3.2s are well into the $30ks, while 308 and Mondial values are flat.

I haven't yet learned to slow down (and probably never will), but I do know I can't afford to drive an expensive car fast. Had I a Ferrari, it would see <2,000 pretty easy miles a year and I would be stretching out those service intervals for DECADES. I guess that means Ferrari ownership just isn't that important to me. I'd like one, but I wouldn't sacrifice Fiero or XR4Ti ownership for one. Late '90s Ferraris are also starting to get cheap - into the $40s for sure. If I was looking for a Ferrari, I'd probably stretch to something from that era - modern, relatively reliable cars. But I really don't see myself ever truly wanting a Ferrari. I'd take that new Maserati any day. Really, the only cars in that class (old and expensive) I'd own would be an air-cooled Porsche or an Esprit, and I have no explanation for why. :)

My understanding from reading around the Ferrari forums, most of the issues on the old cars come from age and disuse, and that the higher mileage cars actually seem to hold up better.

The issue with the later Ferraris, including the 355, of which I'm a huge fan, is that the drivetrain has to be dropped to do the timing belt. The earlier V8 cars avoid this, and they fixed it with the 360, which is priced accordingly.

In my time consulting I briefly looked into 355s and the combination of the engine drop for servicing and the five vale cylinder heads not holding up scared me away.

thesameguy
June 4th, 2014, 11:15 AM
Can't argue with that... although I couldn't afford a timing belt anyway, so I'd need to find one that had it done and plan only to own it between service intervals. I certainly wouldn't want to own an also-ran exotic for the long haul anyway, so a couple year/few thousand mile engagement suits me fine. :)

456s are pretty cheap. Mid engined cars might be cooler, but nobody who is going to be impressed by a 20 year old Ferrari is going to know and/or care which end the engine is in anyway. Plus, what's not to love about a V12?

One doesn't have to be a competitive, fast driver to enjoy great driving dynamics. This goes back to an argument I've made on some previous iteration of our forums, that even the below average driver (not that Joe is one) will appreciate, on some level, direct/linear controls and precision. You can have that without necessarily driving something h4rdc0r3. Several cars from the last few decades blend comfort and involvement in a great way.

I haven't driven a Mondial of course but I don't imagine it's exactly the pinnacle of good feel. It's probably more cumbersome if anything, if I had to guess. The noise and the slightly weird Italian-ness of it are probably its most endearing qualities. To me the Mondial is just too homely to even think about. I could see a 400 or a Dino 308 GT4 or something - inexpensive Ferraris that have some sense of style.

Car love can be completely irrational sometimes, so don't let me stop you. :) I get it. For some reasons that make no sense at all, I desire a Lamborghini Espada. Go figure.

360 is still a belt engine, so that must be factored in for cost of ownership. F430 is probably the best overall Ferrari on the market in terms of reliability, etc.

The valve guide failures was limited to a very narrow group of early 355s. Most have already been handled and fixed, I wouldn't buy a lower mileage early model if I was in the market. I would also recommend a leakdown test and a PPI to prevent walking in on that issue right off the bat. These are still on my radar if I ever need to walk away from the motorcycles.

I don't think you give yourself much credit on what can be had to service the Fezzas...

http://www.ricambiamerica.com/index.php?cPath=40

I also can show you the factory service manuals for most of the Ferraris produced, save the F40, 288 GTO, etc.

456s are considered by a lot of current Ferrari owners to be a great intro into the Ferrari World. Great vehicle all around without crazy expensive ownership (for a Ferrari)

Ugh.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/cto/4499361695.html

I'd avoid the 400i from what some owners have said about keeping them running, yet here I am dreaming over a Testarossa.

It surprises me that the 456 is reasonable to own, being one of the V12 cars. But I wouldn't argue - they were one of the hot shit cars in my formative early teenage years and I'd love to have one.

Yes, the 360 is a belt engine but the difference between it and the 355 is that, at least from what I read a few years ago, the belt can be done in the car, whereas the 355 needs the drivetrain dropped to do it.

Go figure.

Trust me, I'm with you. But then my favorite cars to drive, of the ones I've owned, have been the FC RX-7s, the EM1 Civic Si, the RX-8, and, call me crazy, the Mazda B-series trucks. I do really enjoy my Challenger but it's not engaging like those cars have been. Even the Country Squire and the Roadmaster had their charms. I love good control inputs but sometimes it's more than that. I've been charmed by cars that aren't truly "good" cars.

And I would rather have a Dino 308 GT4 than a Mondial, but some CARB nonsense probably makes that a non-starter.

I'd forgotten about the 400i (as have most people); I actually really like the looks of it. But the last picture in that group...besides WTF, I'm wondering what the far right plate is. Looks like the one next to it is a 70s Florida plate.

But if we're talking about irrational car lust, I would have to place the Alfa Romeo Montreal right up there...and I know Phil can also appreciate that.

As for sightings, I saw my former co-worker's '71 Karmann Ghia that I got to ride in, and that I sourced the YOM plates for. While riding in that, I saw a Mustang II Cobra with a giant blower and equally outrageous rear tires...guessing it was tubbed for the strip. Can't remember the last time I saw one of those in any trim.

Yeah, the 30k service on the 360 can still be done in car. You just aren't getting away from the timing belt was all I was trying to say.

On that note, rant to follow.

I HATE timing belts. Nothing like have a highly tuned engine running something that controls valve train that is NEVER static in stretching and loading.

Had to make another trip to SF, and spotted a beige LS460 with a pair of surf boards on the top. I couldn't reconcile that, but I spent a lot of time thinking. Until some asshat on 80 was doing 55mph holding up traffic. After spending 20 minutes weaving through traffic with the intent of passing the asshat, I discovered the holdup was a sweet orange Datsun 510 wagon towing a small tent trailer. Not sure it was a recommended configuration, but it made me smile seeing it. All sins forgiven.

A Megane R26 was on my rear for most of "a run" last night (I pulled over to let him overtake when I could). It wasn't surprising given that I was in the Legacy - which even with its minor upgrades is not a match for something like that. I very much doubt that the BRZ would have gone any faster, although my friend's bugeye STI probably would have. A handsome car, although I wouldn't have gotten it in red. Nice driver too, we exchanged "the wave" later.
