Anyone up for a meet on, say, Thursday 3rd Nov?

I'm also travelling out of London, but only to Oxford. At least I'm on my own. So do I rent:

- Golf Diesel
- XF Diesel
- XE V6
- Go nuts and rent F-Type Coupe

TIME TRAVEL!

Yes.

And given that route, whatever you can get with auto.

Well, I have looked up a few driving roads around the area. And YOLO or something. So I've gone for the F-Type.

Tell me more about renting an F-Type coupe.

He doesn't have time for you. His dad is a fighter pilot!

Yeah, I've also got a pottery exam to take next week. :hard:

Avis allow you to do it. Best value I found was to rent for a day, in which case it costs only gbp100 more than renting an xf/XE. Once you go beyond that, it's silly money. After hours dropbox return of keys is good too.

Once you go beyond a day, or once you go beyond an F Type?

Yw-slayer

Both. Even the XE is actually PRETTY BAD VALUE as it's more expensive than an XF, although I suppose it's an XE V6 S (allegedly as it also says diesel, which it can't be) rather than an XF diesel.

The other option was Sixt's Maserati Ghibli or Quattroporte, but for around the same price as an F-Type the choice was obvious. The Ghibli is good value as it's GBP640 for 30.11 to 4.12 pickup/dropff LHR, but as I'd be in London for around half of that portion it would be pointless. Plus turning up in an F-Type is excusable, doing so in a Maserati is (IMO) not.

Whoa, GBP640 for nearly two weeks seems like a *really* good deal. I might look into that direction, as while I'd rather do an F-Type extra storage and not having to trade the car back would be quite nice. And I think I have some sort of promotion or something at Sixt. Thanks for the info!

I'm provisionally going away on the morning of Thurs 3rd Dec for a long weekend, so may not be able to meet up - will let you know if that changes.

Tom, ok. Let's see how it goes. Originally I thought I'd be in London for Wednesday evening, but it looks like I'll have to be in Cambridge. I might be able to make it to London for lunch/tea though?

TSG, it's gbp640 for 4 nights, not 2 weeks.

Jeebus, read that three times and still transposed the numbers!

Well, $150/day isn't fantastic, but it's on par with what you'd pay for that class of car here so I can't be upset. I am a little surprised, though, only because last time I was there a E-class barely cost more than a Focus. Could have been some special going on, but I was really itching to grab the E and just be a baller. Or a taxi driver.

I hate Mercs, and yes, why would I want to look like a taxi driver or sales rep? I'd rather drive a Golf or a Focus.

thesameguy

Yeah, and the Benzo was only an auto and the Focus was a manual. :hard:

Yw-slayer

Exactly.

BTW, an S350 or similar for the same period is only GBP351, whereas an E250 or similar is GBP290 with a 2WD GLA being GBP270. Like I said, I don't like Mercs but still, WTF? Obviously the S is the best value out of the lot.

OK, I need to take 4 people and luggage to Cambridge mid-week. For that, Sixt has screaming deals, so do I rent an E estate or go nuts and rent the S Class? Forget the Maserati, 1.5x the price might be worth it for the better driving, but not for the 50000x dickhead factor.

I say go for the dickhead factor... Fuck the haterz

Agreed on all fronts.

And, I'd do the S. Quite a nice way to travel, based on experiences with my employer's S65.

I'm parking and staying in my College. It's all good.

Ended up being told about avisprestige.com which is MUCH cheaper than avis.co.uk for some reason AND they do "Arrive and Drive" i.e. meet you in the terminal and give you the keys so no need to go to the Courtesy Bus.

Jaguar XE 3.0 V6 S, <GBP500 for 5 days. Sorted.

Are you going to have a bicycle too?

Yw-slayer
December 5th, 2015, 02:21 AM
I have old folding bike there, my friends keep it for me when I'm out of town. I did ride it, but as I was here for work and spent most of my time out of London I only managed to ride it once.

Gents, sorry a meeting didn't work out this time, but things were really rushed as I had to do other work, and to drive, between meetings. Next time.

XE review will come in time, and separately.

No problem, I was so tied up with stuff anyway that it wasn't funny. Let's try and meet up when I'm next over. Mid-April looks like a possibility.
