Toying with the idea of getting back into sims a bit (Project Cars piqued my interest).

Any recommendations on wheels?

I've been out of this game for a long ass time.

If you want to mess a bit with it, I'll send you my old Fanatec Porsche GT2 wheel, for shipping only. PC/XBox 360/PS3. Not sure about PS4, doesn't work on XBone. It has an issue where the wheel rim is wobbly. Fanatec said it couldn't be fixed, but I imagine you could open it up and reinforce it maybe.

You'll have to supply your own pedals.

Interesting.

Since I don't have an XB1 or PS4, that makes it easy :)

of course, I don't have Project Cars/any car sim either, so....

If you want bling, get the new Logitech G-series wheel. But don't expect to be able to use the PlayStation version on Xbox or PC. The cunts involved with licensing, probably at Sony, put a stop to that. On the plus side, the G29/G920 looks really, really nice.

If you want options galore and are willing to spend big $$$, go with Thrustmaster. You could easily blow hundreds on a wheel base with a F1 wheel add-on, and a shifter, and pedals.

The main difference between the two is how they're driven. Thrustmaster uses belts to provide the force feedback, while Logitech uses a gear-driven system. Belts are smoother and more organic, gears are more precise. It's really up to you which you'd prefer.

You should get it just because it's called THRUSTMASTER

For years, I had the Force RS, if that's any indication of the level/feel I'm used to?

Admittedly, it's been at least 5-6 years since I've used it (and it's long since been donated).

I remember spending over £200 on one of these back when we raced GPL

And the pedals went bad, the pots were all wonky and I think one of them stopped working. I called Logitech to report it, thinking I'd have to send it back but 3 days later I get a knock at the door and it's a courier with a

And I still have it, although the power brick has gone AWOL at some point but it still works!

I tore my Momo (the black one) to bits. Good wheel at the time.

I think it was the Force GT. ;)

No, but I did have a 32" TV w/a PS3 and a dual monitor PC setup for school. That was when I was a contractor, though, not active duty.

As per the original question, the answer is still Logitec G27 for best all around PC sim wheel.

To go deeper, toss the Logitec pedals and get a set of Fanatec CSR pedals with the inversion kit.

Then head to http://www.derekspearedesigns.com/ and look at what you can do to modify your G27, including mounting real racing wheels to it if that's your thing. I have some other products of his, like a button box.

My little brother and my dog enjoying this setup:

Note the android device just below the center monitor that is feeding telemetry data. At the moment it's displaying 3rd gear and some other data, all of those android screens are customizable. Lots of utility there (DashMeterPro for iRacing).

I play Project Cars with my PS4 and just use the DS4 remote. Project Cars is my 'relaxed' racing experience, the replacement for GT since they can't be arsed to make a game for Sony's current console.

Making a GT game takes time!!! They've only made 3 Forza games since this generation debuted. It'll be a bit yet. (November it looks like)

In that pic above is a cubby hole on the right. I unbolt all the stuff and toss it in there when I know I won't be playing for a few days.

Which leads to:

when the wife decides she wants to do homework or shop online.

I started to plug all of the sim stuff into one hub and just disconnect them all at once to avoid that.

I was planning to replace my old and trusty Logitech Driving Force Pro with something modern with clutch and H-shifter and decided to go for a Logitech G29.
And as I gathered more info I stumbled over an absolute bargain at one of the biggest electronic markets in Germany.

A G29 for just 222 Euro instead of the usual street price of 289 Euro.
And the Driving Force Shifter for under 44 Euro instead of the usual 60 Euro.

I was glad because I found the last G29 and shifter at our nearby store and what I have totally missed, the wheel was bundled with a copy of F1 2017 SE for the PS4! :D

So now I try to get rid of the game as quick as possible and it`s an even better deal. :)
The shifter was labeled as a demonstration model with full warranty by Logitech and I couldn`t spot or feel a difference to a brandnew one.

Too bad that the G29 doesn`t support the AT/MT shifter of the G25/G27 (I don`t like paddle shifting) but a friend of mine has an adaptor to turn it into an USB device.
And sooner or later I will find a single G25/G27 shifter too.
Most modern games support multiple USB devices on the PC so that shouldn`t be a problem.

Nice, good deal!

I'm thinking of taking the real life Momo I had in the E36 and mounting it on the G27. Just need to get a button plate from DSD.

We've got a similar deal available, but for $399.

And F1 2017 is not a bad game. I've played 2015 a bit and enjoyed it a lot, but never tried it with a wheel, which I think would improve the experience a fair bit.

Many of the sim racing channels on YouTube seem to take it fairly seriously, although not on-par with iRacing, et al. I think you should give it a go before flicking it.

EDIT: unless you really want to sell it, name a fair price and I might grab it off you :)

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/games-consoles/platforms/playstation-4/f1-2017-special-edition/452573

79 AUD is ~53 Euro and I think I could sell it in my town for 45-50 Euro so I don`t think it would be a deal for me and for you.
And first I would have to check if it has got english language too.

A friend of mine bought the PC version and he liked the improved handling.

For me modern Formula 1 is boring, I would prefer it more up to the middle of the 80`s.

Now that I got such a nice wheel and a triple monitor setup... does GPL run on Win 10? :D

P.S.: No PS4.

My friend is totally into GTR2 and he has a racing seat with rumble, a triple 24" (?) setup, a G27 and I guess 7-8 wheels with those button plate.
But now he is more modding, editing and setting up the cars than racing. :D

I will keeep the G29 as it is because all those buttons on the wheels are very handy for different sims than racing: ETS2/ATS, On the Road (german truck sim, early access), Spintires and maybe for games like Farming Simulator 2017.

But sooner or later I will buy or DIY a button box because you can never have enough buttons.

Fair enough

It would definitely have English, as all EU version games are sold as far afield as AU/NZ. The code on the disc is the same, it's just the printing on the label that changes.

I can recommend Derek Speare Designs button boxes. Quality stuff.

With the DSD mini-plate you can mount a real steering wheel and keep all the buttons. He also sells extended shifter paddles to match the diameter of your new wheel.

http://derekspearedesigns.com/uploads/3/3/3/7/3337442/2564855_orig.jpg?172

That's one of the boxes on the left, but they come in basically endless configurations. When I ordered mine he configured it incorrectly so he sent me the correct one and let me keep the original. Unfortunately I gave it to Ed, who quit sim racing to write vampire stories shortly after, else I'd give it to you.

Nice buttonboxes but the pricetag...

He even got worldwide free shipping but everyhing outside the EU is expensive because of additional VAT and customs fees.

BTW - A young guy just picked up F1 2017 SE at home for 50 Euro. :)

Wow, you'e right. I bought my box way back in 2012 and it was $135 shipped. Whoops. Now I'm twice as annoyed that Ed has the other one.

The mini plates and extended paddles are relatively cheap so I didn't think much of it. My bad.

Next sunday I will drive with two friends to the Nürburgring, because there is the SimRacingExpo 2017 - admission free.
And on sunday there will be the Blancpain GT Series - Sprint Cup at the GP track too. :rawk:

So first we will visit the expo and then we will visit the race (20 Euro) for a while.
Because just visiting the expo wouldn`t be worth the trip as it`s not nearby.
