The 2016 SCCA Solo Nationals begin this coming weekend with the ProSolo Finale on Sat/Sun and the main event Tuesday, Sept 6, through Friday, Sept 9. The event is being held at the Lincoln Airport (https://goo.gl/maps/svxZ6GqeS5m) in Lincoln, Nebraska, a mere 22 hour drive from my place here in Davis.

I know Cuda and I are going. Glen "Hurricane" Hernandez and Jim "JimR" Rowland will also be there representing the "lost" GTFers. Anyone else I'm forgetting?

Check http://sololive.scca.com/ for live timing and scoring. The sololive page will also have links to live commentary and video.

I'll be running my 2015 Fiesta ST in HS on Thursday/Friday, car #69.
Cuda will be in his 350Z in STU on Tuesday/Wednesday, car #89.
Glen will be driving an 04 Corvette Z06 in AS on Tuesday/Wednesday, car #41.
Jim will be driving a 2015 Scion FR-S in CS on Tuesday/Wednesday, car #36.

Cuda and Hurricane will also be competing in the ProSolo Finale. :)

It's a big year for Solo Nationals--a record number of registrations, expecting to have 1300+ drivers at the event. My class is one of the smaller Street classes, with a mere 30 drivers. JimR will be in CS with a whopping 85 drivers. :D

Packing process started for me this evening with the ceremonial switching of my all-seasons for a set of Continental ExtremeSport :hard: DW (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=ExtremeContact+DW) tires that will be our "monsoon or six inches of standing water tires," and also my tires for driving out. Hope it doesn't snow over the passes!

Things that have to end up in the car:

competition tires (4)
jack
jack stands
tool box
spare parts (brake pads, rear motor mount, etc)
fluids (oil, coolant, brake)
helmet
pit stuff (water sprayer, air gauge, pump)
paddock stuff: chair, umbrella, walking shoes
clothes for 9 days

Plus two bicycles.

Bicycles may go on the roof rack, but I'm hoping to tetris my way out of that fuel mileage penalty.

Between CS and STX, there will be a metric buttload of twins there. :)

Was going to ask if you felt the OK earthquake but you're probably not there yet.

They were just trying to make it feel like home for you, Russ.

Sitting in seventh after Day 1, a few tenths off the podium. Wanted to be a touch faster, but satisfied.

Will be back on course early tomorrow (8ish Central time).

Per Dan Wheeler, he's a nice guy. Pretty blunt and oblivious to certain social norms, but overall nice guy.

P.s. I'm faster than him. By a decent amount.

The "C-Max" was a Focus ST. Jonathan was being a comedian. :D. He entered it as a Transit Connect at an event earlier this year.

What do you know about the "spec e36" that placed 10th at nationals

Random
September 11th, 2016, 07:39 PM
"Spec" was tongue in cheek, afaik. It was just like all the other STX E36es that are/used to be out there, which may be why he said "spec." :)

So I have two thoughts. Part of me wants to build an STX car, see BMW or RX8. Thoughts on this?

Other idea is an STR build on an s2000. Problem is buddy who has the s2000 wants to daily on the coil overs I'd supply. (8200 motons) which cost 800ea. That idea scares the shit out if me with potholes, etc. Thoughts on thjs?

In STX I like the BMW's chances over the RX-8's.

Copied from a post elsewhere:

Nationals thoughts/review in no particular order:

Parking: 25x25 is pretty generous for one person with one car. My co-driver and I ended up sharing our spots with two other people from our region. An option for half spots might be worthwhile/helpful?

Competition: Very fun. Disappointed that I couldn't hang onto my Day 1 trophy spot (I was seventh!!!), but had a great time regardless. Class competitors were very chill. CaSSino's car went woooo! Rob Luis came from obscurity (ha!) to capture the HS championship we thought he could. http://www.roadraceautox.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Courses: Like a lot of people, I thought the visuals on the west course were...peculiar. However, I thought it drove fine. http://www.roadraceautox.com/images/smilies/shrug.gif I need to learn my codriver's skill at slaloms.

Course-working: as has been previously noted, two-person stations suck. Fortunately, I was at a relatively quiet station on the east (station 1), but still... My station was also two first-timers, FWIW (not that it's any different than working a Tour, just thought I would point that out). I am very happy that I worked Heat 4 on Friday, not Heat 5. http://www.roadraceautox.com/images/smilies/tongue.png

People: met a lot of people that I only knew from online. Very cool. Saw some of our sport's luminaries at a distance--they do actually exist! Neat! Had a good time hanging out with the SFR/AAS folks that made the trip. Had a couple beers in Canada--very fun. Was disappointed that HS ran opposite of AM--I really wanted to see a SRS BZNS A-Mod car attack the course in person.

Banquet(s): Food at the Th/F banquet was noticeably better than on T/W. Weird.

Travel: Wyoming was much more scenic than I expected. Nebraska was pretty dull.

Hi. :)

It's been a frightfully, awfully, terribly (said in my best British upper-crust accent) busy few weeks. Managed to sneak in a championship amongst it all.

Somehow I also managed to not get any action shots of Russ or Clemson on course, despite talking to them on grid between runs with camera in hand. Oops. :o

Cool to see you do the Nationals thing this year Russ. After Packwood, I'm sure you can trophy. Next time. :)

STU? Is there an STFU class? :p
No but there is a Ladies class, STUL - some folks have taken the obvious route with letter re-arrangement at times. ;)

Some people felt the quake in Lincoln. I didn't. Us CA guys didn't think they had earthquakes there.

And there will be a next time. Probably not next year, but maybe the year after that.

In the meantime, my homework is to get faster in slaloms. :hard:

Video!

Day 1:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE3iKVjXWzI

Day 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk44ZHZyZUI

Notes:
Camera set-up was four GoPros. Location data from a GPS puck (visible in the windshield), car data from an OBD-2 dongle. Both connected to a MotoX via BT. MotoX providing acceleration data and running an autocrossing data aq package called "SoloStorm."

The rear camera was our "just in case there's a question about a cone" cam.

The "yeah!" at the end of the 2nd video is because I thought it was a 66.4xx. "Oh, it's not a four." :(

I get much closer to right side cones than lefts. Funky.

1+ lateral gs. :hard:

I need to be faster in slaloms. If you combined my sweepers with Ed's slaloms, you'd have a fast autocrosser.

CudaMan
October 2nd, 2016, 03:43 PM
Looks/sounds like you might be able to carry more speed into those sweepers, too, generally speaking. From my vantage point it looks like early and hard off the brakes, and into maintenance throttle early as well. Also means there could be more hang time for the inside rear tire and thus extra kudos points. :p Can definitely understand not wanting to blow a corner and make a big mistake at Nationals. Just something to think about. :) Try at Crows in a couple weeks?

Cool to see you make the trip out to Nationals this year and co-drive with Ed.
