View Full Version : RWA's comprehensive (but not long enough) list of essential YouTube video game viewing

In recent times I've started to become addicted to watching videos about gaming (but not really watching videos of gaming) on YouTube, and I'm really enjoying it. There's so much good stuff to see on that humble website, so I thought it would be cool if I shared what I find and hopefully encourage you guys to throw up some of the things you've been watching about this great hobby of ours.

Most of the stuff I find is usually suggested to me based on my viewing and search habits, so YMMV. You'll hopefully appreciate that not many of the uploaders I list here ever start a video with "Heyyy what's up guys?!?!?"

In no particular order:

Currently I'm slowly picking my way through a very good series dissecting the Halo franchise. The narrator picks apart the games from Halo: CE right through to Halo: Reach, Bungie's last Halo game, with a renewed perspective thanks to the passage of time and a better ability to look at things objectively, rather than buried among the Halo hype train from the mid-90s. All the videos are long, about 30-40 minutes each, covering one game from the series. My favourite is the look back at Halo 2, which really captured the incredible hype for that title, and showed off how Bungie really genuinely captured lightning in a bottle back in 2004.

Here's the first video, and here's the playlist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sCbz8H9fqU&list=PLwasbalZ_RsDNfMOKbFHl-GCO2Y_Jccsn&index=5). Grab a coffee and come back in a few hours.

This is Digital Foundry. You should be familiar with Eurogamer's technology analysts by now. If not, get familiar. It's very informative. They have a neat DF Retro series where they look back at old games and see how they stack up when looked at in line with the technology of the time.

I like Did You Know Gaming, going through it's massive catalogue of videos and picking out subjects that I like.

I don't know where JackFrags comes from or what his background is, but if you watch him play you'll see that he has insane skill in multiplayer FPSs. In the past he's focussed a lot on Battlefield 4 and has moved on to a lot of BF1 gameplay. His tutorials are brilliant if these games are your jam.

I've mentioned Jim Sterling recently but I'll link him here again anyway. As I was checking his channel he'd just uploaded a questionably SFW review of Brazzers' Cock of Duty, a porn review from a gaming perspective. It's hilarious as fuck. Also stay for The Jimquisition and Nitpick Theater. Good value.

For more modern racing stuff, this is Don Joewon Song. He makes tutorials on the Forza series, and at the moment he is conquering the leaderboards for Horizon 3 and showing us all how he does it. The videos are slick and well produced.

I'll leave it for now with what is probably my favourite gaming video uploader of all time, Mr Mark Brown. He is a journalist who has taken it upon himself to chronicle what he sees as interesting game design subjects through his Game Maker's Toolkit videos. He looks at level design, open world navigation, how Nintendo throws up new challenges in the Mario series, and more. He is also in the middle of producing a series called Boss Keys where he looks at the design of The Legend Of Zelda's puzzles and dungeons. When I discovered his channel I dead set sat through all of his videos in one multi-day binge. All of them from beginning to end. I just love his voice. So warm and inviting and British.

Oh ok then. Just one more. Ahoy seems to mostly delve into various guns and their roles in video games, but there are a few more interesting topics presented when you look through the playlists.

I hope you enjoy, and please suggest more.

Along with JackFrag's, he usually runs Battlefield group sessions with LevelCap (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClMXf2oP5UiW_V4dwHxY0Mg), Matimio (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCic79WdIerj8RpcshGi5ZiA), and xFactor (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXN76fKLJUFeMK12fAN5Gug), all of who are extremely talented and have good, solid commentary on the games they play.

I watched a couple of his Kerbal videos maybe two years ago. I was left with tears of laughter streaming down my cheeks.
