This would be a serious contender for me, if, it wasn't so FUCKING UGLY.

The latest Gen Civics look like sacs of hammered assholes. I see them all over the place, and they're not growing on me (at least in a positive way).

Now, the '17 R 'plant in the '15 Si Coupe? I'd probably throw obscene money at that, make it AWD, and I'd probably throw in a kidney too. Fucking Honda.

As it happens to be, maybe next summer I'll start looking for a replacement.

In light of the beaten-with-syphillc-dick looks of the Civics.... it may be time to jump off the bandwagon. 35-40k would buy a lot of things...

Not too keen on the new WRX looks either.

Maybe I just need to go balls out and get something with a V8. (again, next summer, most likely)

I'm thinking about a serious departure from 4 cylinders at this point.

I wonder how much a 2008 RS4 is these days.

Seriously.

Very true, give me a EK, make mine a EK9.

Too bad Honda can't do 'nostalgia', like Ford does with Mustang.

S550 '18 mustang can be bought with mrsc shocks.

Seriously.

You know that that's true when the #1 (clueless) SUBARU FANBOI 4 LY43 on the forum says to buy one instead of a WRX or STI. I'd get one over an STI (WRX not in the same price bracket).

I kinda like the new Civic Type R. It's batshit weird in a good way. :)

If I was aware of an upcoming plastic shortage, I'd invest in one too. :P

They should have called it Veilside Edition!

I thought that's what the new R was... a tribute to Veilside body kits from the '90s.

I'm thinking of it from another aspect as well, cleaning it.

It would be seven shades of shit pain in the ass washing it with all those ducts and shit. Considering how much it rains here (well, not so much this year...), it'd be an unending battle.

Nah, in some ways, cars like that look even better when covered in mud and stuff.

I saw one in person at the NY Auto Show and...yeah, no. It's such a hobbled mess. The rear end aero, especially on the roof, is just nuts.

It's impressive on Nürburgring, but besides being ugly, I just can't get over the inflated price.

CRZ, NSX... are all way more complex and expensive than their awesome yet simple replacements.

BLack, HERE? hahaha. It'd be 1000° 360 days a year...

Thanks Alan! :toast:

My brother in law just bought a brand new Civic hatchback with a turbocharged engine, but it looks a lot more sedate than that one. I should send him that pic and tell him to Pimp His Ride.

I'm "ok" with most of it. But my two biggest, vomitous points are the ridiculous wing, and the quasimoto front fender humps. Omit the wing, and shave down the front fenders (more like the 2015), and I'd probably be ok with the rest of the vented hell of it.

The fenders remind me of an older generation F150 hood. for fuck's sake.

Honestly I think all the crazy protrubences make the new Civic Type R look better than the regular one. Like they've gone all-in on the fugly.

There are so few reasonably priced enthusiast cars in the US right now. If I was in the market I'd certainly consider it. For right now, though, I'm going to be happy with my paid-off car with 63,000 miles until I get used to my mortgage payment. :(

thesameguy
May 4th, 2017, 06:06 PM
Man, I would not consider a $36,000 car to be a "reasonably priced car" in any sense. It's positioned against the Focus RS and Golf R, leaving the STs, BRZs, and even lower-spec V8 pony cars as cheaper alternatives. Hell, you can pretty much buy a 330i for the same price!

KillerB

No one actually buys new BMW 3-Series... let's be real. :)

TheBenior
May 4th, 2017, 07:50 PM
Around here, you can't find 330i with MSRP below $45k.

Which I guess isn't an issue for the typical lessee.

thesameguy
May 4th, 2017, 07:55 PM
That's sort of the point... The Type is a lot of money for not really a lot of car. A 330i and a "stage 1" upgrade from anywhere would be *way* more car for the same money... and BMW will even pay for the maintenance. I'm sure Honda will sell Type Rs, but it won't be to enthusiasts. The $20k SVT vs. Type R vs. SE-R vs GTI was a legit battle being all about the same price and all about the same power:weight. The new Type R is bringing a vagina to a dick swinging contest.

That's how Honda's been doing things for a good decade now. When I bought my Mazdaspeed3, the Civic Si was bringing a knife to a turbocharged gunfight.

thesameguy
May 4th, 2017, 08:29 PM
True, true. I completely forgot about that last generation!

Upside: Really interested to see what Honda's "sporty" turbo looks like vs, say, the RDX.

Funny side: Advertising "turbo VTEC" like catching up with 2010 nets a trophy.

You have to have somewhere to store them.

How much is a Focus RS compared to the Type R expected sticker price? And how does that compare to a V8 Pony car? (I know, hot hatch isn't a direct competitor but performance wise it could be) and then, say, a BMW 135i or 140i? Is the Civic going to be a performance bargain of sorts?

Random
May 6th, 2017, 03:51 PM
Base RS is $37k, and you can option it up to about $43k depending on your wheel/tire choices, etc.

thesameguy
May 6th, 2017, 07:08 PM
The Type R price hasn't been set, but they're suggesting $37k base MSRP, so very close to an RS or Impreza STI or Golf R. About the same as a Mustang GT Premium, about the same as a Camaro V8. The 300hp FWD Type R is playing with a 350hp AWD Focus and 400+hp RWD pony cars. It's about $7k more than a BRZ or Focus ST, and in that arena it'd be competitive, maybe a little ahead of the game. It's an insane price, IMHO, given the competition in its predicted price range. Honda doing crazy shit again.

It'll be a problem for people that shop by horsepower number.

The autocrossers will wait to see if a real limited slip diff makes a difference and will want to see how much camber it gets and how wide the front wheels are.

The Honda fanbois will buy it no matter what.

Given the FoRS's issues with overheating the rear power unit, I'm not sure it counts as an AWD car yet. :p

Again, honestly...for $40k, I'd probably opt for Mustang GT. In fact, I'm leaning that way at the moment.

(But I'm still a good year off to seriously take a step)

KillerB

Base price is $33,900, so actually a fair amount cheaper than the STI or FoRS, though of course it lacks AWD.

After watching the 'ring video and looking at a fair number of pictures, it's starting to grow on me. Thankfully it's at least somewhat rev-happy (redline appears to be just above 7,000 RPM), but I do miss the 8,000+ RPM screamers.

ITRs go for crazy money now... interestingly I think the best value in old-school Hondas at this point is the S2000.

thesameguy
June 8th, 2017, 08:27 PM
So, kinda splits the difference between a FoST and FoRS. I still can't imagine choosing it over either, or pretty much anything else that money could buy but at least it's not insane.

Our dealership just took our first deposit for one. We don't know when they're going to be available, we don't even have pricing yet. Dude called up from Toronto because all of the city dealers are already sold out.

Also, Ford is making some of the FoRS options mandatory and now the base price is just under $42,000 for 2018.

Highs: Powerful, tractable engine; near perfect shifter; sophisticated ride quality; precise steering.

Lows: Could stand to have a more thrilling exhaust note; it looks like a 2017 Honda Civic Type R.
