The $80 system generously includes two controllers this time (the NES Classic only came with one) and fits in the palm of your hand, just like last year's throwback model.

In addition to Star Fox 2, the SNES Classic comes with other massive hits like Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Yoshi's Island and more.

Interestingly, Nintendo is opting to do region-specific releases this time -- the UK and other territories will get the Super Famicon styling -- it's the same console, just with some different visual flair.

Yes, they have a new console in the works. But they also have an old console coming in September.

And I doubt anyone gives a fuck in comparison to the SNES Classic.

The best part: the US version will be US-specific, and that could potentially mean that the rest of the world has an easier time of getting hold of these since a different machine will be sold outside of scalper land.

But this still won't stop millions of people from tripping over their boners to get one on launch day. Like me.

Pre-orders are already selling out all over the UK, according to Eurogamer.

The same website also makes comment on how significant it is that Nintendo are finally releasing Star Fox 2.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-06-26-why-star-fox-2s-release-on-snes-mini-is-such-a-big-deal

It actually is a big deal. It's a game that Nintendo threw in the bin when they realised that a primitive 3D title like that would look silly releasing alongside titles coming out at the very start of the Playstation era. Along with this and Metroid Prime 4, it's almost as if someone finally found and hit the big red button at Kyoto marked "Good Guy Nintendo".

while we're on this topic. I've been playing retro games lately and wanted to ask your opinions....

Which do you like better, Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World?

Yw-slayer
June 29th, 2017, 07:29 PM
World. It's not even a fair comparison. In some ways I even prefer it to 64, for while 64 moved it into 3D, World used 16-bit to really elevate the storytelling, number of worlds, and really gave them free reign to really express themselves.

I'm much more of an SMB 3 fan than SMW...so just wondering if I was in the minority here (with a small sample size admittedly)

SMB 3 for me just flows better, has better upgrades and more interesting maps. It's also such a huge leap from the first Super Mario Bros and still on the same console.

The All-Stars version of SMB 3 is also upgraded with graphics to match SMW.

yes, SMW brings us Yoshi which is good and bad.

Super Mario Advance (re-released version of SMW on GBA) was the first 2D Mario platformer that I was ever able to finish, so I've got a soft spot for it. But I think SMB 3 is top titty among the 2D titles. That was its peak, and it has never been there again. The New Super Mario Bros. titles are just pretenders wrapped in fancy graphics.

Punch-em-ups have been sorely neglected in recent years. It seems every other retro genre has been kickstarted somewhat recently but I don't recall seeing a punch-em-up revival.

In modern times we've had Shenmue and the Yakuza series, but those games are in 3D and nobody likes games in 3D.

There's plenty of stock in Australia. Looks like two retailers (EB and Target) will have stock on the shelf in selected stores - Target has a max four per person limit across about 20 stores country wide.

All the people complaining about artificial stock shortages can eat their hats come Christmas - the demand will be high but nowhere near as bad as last year with the NES. It also helps that the main board inside the console is almost identical to the NES as well. They've been manufacturing these for a while now.

So... scalpers can eat a dick.

Got mine. I don't remember the graphics being quite this bad, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and I guess I didn't know any better and have lower expectations too. I don't remember Contra III being that difficult but fun was had with Mario Kart with my son and the SNES Zelda is the only one I actually completed so might give that a go again along with Secret of Mana. If I have time!

The SNES Classic and the NES Classic share near-identical hardware, and it’s possible to flash SNES games into the NES. You’ll just need a controller with 6 buttons from a company like 8Bitdo and you’re good to go.

I wonder, when the SNES Classic has been hacked, if it’ll run N64 games…

Wouldn't the sensible thing to do be to wait until a mini-N64 gas been released, then flash games from predecessors onto that?

Actually, the MOST sensible thing to do would be to run everything via an Emulator and an 8bitdo controller.

I got #43 of #70 at Best Buy, thanks to a co-worker who stood in line for 3 hours for me on his day off. Blessed be he, and his giant nic-stained beard.

I emulate the shit out of everything too, but there's something to be said for having it in a nice, smooth-running package that runs with the right frame-rates and the right resolution. And REAL, legit SNES controllers that feel and look the same. If you were to add up buying these games legitimately (on Wii Virtual Console or mostly on Steam, or wherever else) then $80 is a MASSIVE value.

October 6th, 2017, 08:17 AM
I see no difference in buying one of these nostalgia boxes and setting up your own emulator. You're either playing the original gear or you're not. They're both fun, but the reboot stuff is not the original experience.
