I’ve been on a SMO news blackout and haven’t watched any trailers or gameplay videos for weeks.

Played for about an hour, lots of fun stuff and little touches. They're so good at subtly drawing your eye, and rewarding you for looking around and experimenting.

I’m two hours in. It’s too early to call it, but I’m pretty sure that SMB3 is still the best Mario game. Oddysey isn’t threatening that crown.

Although it will definitely topple Super Mario Run for fifth-best Mario game.

I "beat" the game, but just as with Super Mario 3D World, it opens up more worlds, and more content and activities in the worlds you've already been to.

Gonna get a Switch for Christmas :) So hyped.

I just picked up the wedding Mario and Peach amiibo's for their in-game costumes :)

Thanks!

I'm pretty close to ordering a Switch. Might get it this week. I picked up Mario + Rabbids already. That and Odyssey got me excited :)

I forgot about Sonic. I was going to get it for Steam but held off because it sounds like a good on the go game! Good call.

I guess I should give a longer impression for people that haven't/won't play the game, even though plenty of others will do the same, and sometimes in YouTube form.

Many gamers found Mario 64 to be a revelation. The exploration, secrets, level design and general creativity of Mario games in a sprawling, varied 3D world. It gives so many possibilities, and Nintendo is excellent at taking advantage of possibilities. I played other 3D Mario games afterwards, but none of them felt so open, free, and playful, they were smaller environments seemingly so they could focus on specific new ideas.

Super Mario Odyssey brings back that feeling of freedom, through fantastic level design and the capture mechanic. Switching the acquisition of new powers and capabilities from power-ups/suits/hats, which were hidden in boxes, to enemies, means that almost every new enemy is actually a new power-up. You get excited to find enemies, especially new ones, because it means there are new capabilities, and new puzzles to go with them. As usual, Nintendo does a fantastic job with them. In almost every situation there are the simple things to collect that everyone can get, and then additional items that require more critical thinking, exploration, and skills (some above my level) to acquire. A player of almost any reasonable skill level will be able to experience almost the entire game no matter what, but as an expert player, you will definitely be rewarded.

The graphics are great, the sound is great, etc etc, all that good stuff. Tons of lovely, fun surprises throughout, in presentation and gameplay. If you have any interest in platforming and exploration or just gaming in general, you'll love it. If you only want realistic action sports/shooter/etc or incredibly deep storylines, and have never cared for anything Mario related, then *maybe* you won't like the game. You probably will, though.

Mario 64 was a 10/10 for me. Sunshine got some flack but it was still 9/10 for me. Galaxy was awesome but I liked 64 just a bit more so that one's a 9.5 for me. I never got to Galaxy 2 but I heard that one was amazing as well.

I'm only a few hours in (I played until 1 am last night) and I think Odyssey is just as good as 64 or maybe better. Like you said, the freedom and capture mechanic is great.

I like how the levels have little towns in them with shops. I always enjoyed RPG games that had safe town zones for you to chill. In Mario, you get to interact, get tips for the level and buy stuff. You can also find hidden moons. The exploration is the best part of this game. Just a simple change of not forcing you to restart the level after each moon makes it flow better. It almost flows like the new Zelda game.

Tried out 2 player last night. It's not the best 2 player Mario experience but it's playable. The hat handles like a mouse cursor.

The game has a lot of charm. When I unlocked the third and forth level, I stayed behind on level 2 to get moons. I didn't stay because I wanted to collect more moons, but just because I loved that stage so much and didn't want to leave.

Attention to detail is really good. Going to try to type this without spoiling but one of the level two bosses I found earlier sticking out of the sand. I tried to stomp on it and it made a grunt after 3 stomps. I later noticed that it was the top part of the boss' head when I got to the fight.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing RE: that boss. I wondered how I was going to "solve" that the first time I saw it, it was a great surprise how it was actually used.

I’m sure I’d love it but I feel like I’ll get more use out of Super Mario Maker. Is there anything else worth getting a Wii U for?

Kchrpm
November 2nd, 2017, 04:07 AM
Do you mean the Switch?

Rare White Ape
November 2nd, 2017, 05:42 AM
Nah he wants to play Smash and Bayonetta and Mario Maker and (whisper it) Virtual Console games. Wii U has a larger install base with a wider range of games, don’t forget.

KillerB
November 4th, 2017, 11:49 AM
Yeah, I mean, is there anything worth getting the Wii U for other than Super Mario Maker?

Kchrpm
November 4th, 2017, 12:27 PM
Uh, I mean, it depends on what you like to play. If you've waited this long, you probably don't care about most of the things available on the system. You could get Mario Maker for 2DS for cheaper, unless Wii U's are $50 now, and at least it's not an already-dead system.

Sorry for the confusion, but I didn't know why you were asking about games for the Wii U in a thread about a Switch game.

I highly recommend the HD remakes of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Add in Wii back-compat and VC and I think you can play every Zelda game ever released. Plus SM3DW is fucking amazing.

^ cool pics :)

Just finished the story. I really like what they did with the post-game.

I finally got around to learning the long jump > hat throw > dive > hat throw > dive move. I wish I learned it sooner since it lets you skip some of the platforming and it saved my butt a few times when I missed a platform. I watched a video on how to do the complicated high jump and I can't pull it off yet.
