Anybody familiar with it?

Profs are total nerds. They hate MS Word, they want us to embrace nerdy things.

I've liked what I've seen of http://www.overleaf.com/ but i'd prefer something non browser-based.

Profs were last seen chanting: "We accept you, One of us".

Hahah, I totally thought you were just cracking wise on my "don't open with small talk" FB post.

I don't know a lot about LaTeX, but my sister's a math professor and uses it quite frequently. I'll post your question to her.

I am pretty sure Lori has used it some, but not in recent memory. She's not an expert with it.

My sister mentioned overleaf and said a lot of her students use it, but she thinks the compiler is a little too friendly. It ends up just ignoring errors that cause problems with other compilers and leads to bad habits.

Her favorite is TexMaker and she also likes texniccenter.

My professor uses texniccenter. It is not that friendly imo. I'm going to give LyX a shot, see what happens.
