I reckon I joined the original granturismo.com forum in September 1999 - some of you must've already reached this milestone though, no?

The peeps that joined kenji's original board (gamehunter?) in Winter 1998 just hit 15 years. :)

I don't remember. It was during GT1, because I remember being confused as to why the Mk4 Supra had a higher top speed with the stock flywheel, as Swervo (I think) said.

Rob
January 6th, 2014, 03:28 PM
What's with people assuming 2009 was a long time ago? 99 and 09 aren't easy to confuse....unless you're really old. Like Brett.

I'm a relative n00b. Summer 2003 just as Kenji flipped his shit resulting in some Grade A arguments with KillerB and whichever one of the many obvious aliases Nigel was using that day.

Feb '99 for me. Roofer too. I guess I remember that because we all had the date joined under our names and the internet was fresh and new and the whole thing seemed very cool.

But all the REALLY cool kids had Dec '98 under their names.

And speaking of GT1 and Supras, I believe I still hold the record for top speed on the Test Track of 268 or 269 mph. I remember posting all my settings and lots of commentary in the Top Speed thread back at Kenji's. "Hold the record" may be a bit boastful, but what I mean is I don't believe anyone ever posted proof of going faster than that in GT1.

What's more, I still have my PS and GT1 and a saved replay of that run on a memory card. Really.

BuddaBobb and Hybrids - wow.

How about "spook", the guy who wrote in all lower case, and perhaps didn't use punctuation either, getting pissed off and deleting every one of his 10,000+ posts?

Nov '99, it said on the original forum.

We'd been Nintendo (64) loyalists, but during that summer I'd played Gran Turismo at my nephew's Playstation, and was hooked. Sometime in the autumn (september or october) I got a Playstation, Gran Turismo and Driver.
My wife was initially miffed, but ended up a huge fan of the Final Fantasy and Resident Evil games.

I had a Gameshark as well. Had some fun times with it. Also remember going to the library after work(no net access at home) to look for new codes for games that I had.

I was 30, and in outside sales. I had some time between appointments one day or whatever and wandered into a Best Buy store to kill some time - probably looking for albums on CDs and/or cassettes.

I saw a PlayStation set up for demos and was struck dumb and motionless when I saw GT on the screen.

My parents would never buy me an Atari 2600 (although we just called them Ataris back then, as opposed to Coleco or Intellivision or whatever else was around). I couldn't believe the "virtual reality" of GT1.

By then, PSs weren't new and they cost $99. GT1 might have cost me $10 or $15. I went back for a day or two to check this thing out and very soon bought the PS and GT1. I guess like a lot of us, I used Yahoo or AOL or AltaVista search engines looking for hints and tips and that's how I showed up at the first one of these many forums.

Like many here, I found the board via Yahoo! search, as I was also looking for tips/tricks to GT. My first messages were to Cuda due to the fact that we both owned one, and I quickly realized that I wasn't nearly as good at the game as I thought I was.

Wow. 15yrs already? Don't even recall when and how I joined the place. Probably initially just wanted to join spook's IROC race at first and then eventually end up on Kenji's board. Also had fond memories of racing in EZGT back then. Come to think of it, a lot of the old timers are long gone... some even have passed away! Anyway, I certainly enjoyed whatever I've remembered so far. Certainly wasted a lot of my life on forums like these... ;)

Anyway, thanks Random for setting this up!

I saw a PlayStation set up for demos and was struck dumb and motionless when I saw GT on the screen.

*Nod*

It was spring '98 and I was on Easter holiday. I walked into a games shop and saw GT on demo. The race was SSR5 (or CSR5), there was a silver Viper going round the long tunneled left-hander which is the first corner. From the way that the cars moved on their suspensions and went into oversteer, I immediately knew two things. First, that I must have this game. Second, that if I got this game before June, when I took my A-levels, I would fail them miserably.

July 98 I bought a PSX and GT, played the heck out of it. Left school, gap year job with IBM, evenings and weekends free for GT.

Jan 99 we got internet and I found granturismo.com, the rest was history. I made up the name 'samoht' there and then, and have been using it on many other discussion boards ever since. And like many of you, I soon discovered that I wasn't as good at the game as I thought I was !

So yes, it's almost exactly 15 years for me. I have got so much more fun out of the GT series thanks to you guys, I'm sure I'd not still be playing otherwise. I've known you guys pretty much all my adult life and longer than I've known my wife (11 years), all that time the forum and the game have sat perfectly at the nexus of my three abiding deep interests in cars, computer programming and Japanese culture.

So yeah, thanks Random for putting this new place together, genuinely much appreciated! And thanks everyone who has kept the community together over the years, right back to Kenji in the old days.

I don't think I appeared, as GT2toXS until after GT2 had come out. Prior to that, I tried to learn from rec.games.video.sony and alt.games.video.sony-playstation, etc.

There is a lot more to it than that.
B3 for example looks easy, but it one of the hardest golds to get.

Then again A7 looks hard, but it by far the easiest!!!

Some of them do. Just not the ones which were featured in the Japanese
games, I believe. (I.e. the Japanese game had only a few license test
demos, and none of them were gold, I believe).

I think I must have registered in '99. I'm pretty sure I was a member right around the time GT2 came out. I can find my name in a few threads at the web archive from 2001 and I was by then already racing with DD and Dudley and Gasman and that crew in GPL and I know I was a member of the GT.com forum for a while before I got involved with that...

and man it sure is a blast to read through some of that archived stuff. Gives you a really intense feeling of "the more things change the more they stay the same." Here we are at GT6 and the discussions don't sound much different than what we were arguing about nearly 15 years ago... :)

September '99 for me, iirc. Hard to remember a time when you guys weren't a part of my life.

Russ told me about this board this morning. I'd seen some announcement of it somewhere - probably facebook - but it was sort of a blip between long bouts of work, but then he reminded me this morning and we had a short conversation about it and I mentioned how remarkable it was that I've been around "the GT Universe" for such a long time. From this thread I know that it's at least since December 9, 1998.

I knew it was 1998 because I still had my Eldorado when I joined. In fact, I drove to the Best Buy in Lorain, Ohio, in that car to buy GT and my PS1.

I had some life-changing personal events in 2005 & 2006, and I haven't been as involved in the group since then (said events had nothing to do with here). And I think it's fair to say I've always been quite private, and that maybe over the years that led me to participate somewhat less than I should have offline, I think I've only been to maybe five or six GT get-togethers over the years, though notably one of them was the highlight of an otherwise rather dismal trip to London in 2003. But I want you to know - all of you reading this, whether we've always gotten along or not - that the place may change but the people will always be important to me.

What Alex said, for sure. I think finally PD is willing to acknowledge that they didn't change the way we look at cars... they changed the tack of our real lives, forever, and catalyzed friendships that have weathered a complex and fast-changing era.

I'm trying to be the best car guy I can be, personally and professionally. Any industry professional I spend any real amount of time with has heard my spiel about how the GTF helped raise me into who I am today, and I'm sure they all sense that I'm beaming with pride when I describe you all.
