Ted will do a notebook every evening on First and Third test on the F1 Channel and no doubt this will be available online too.
It's expected there will be a daily 15 minute wrap every test on the F1 Channel but this is TBC
Live trackside commentary on Sky.com or skysports.com website plus picture galleries.

Fans can choose from a selection of five different names listed on Ferrari’s official website.

The options available are F14 T, F14 Maranello, F14 Scuderia, F166 Turbo and F616. A winner will be chosen on January 24th.

Ferrari will then reveal its new car for the first time the following day. Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen plus team principal Stefano Domenicali, will also answer a selection of questions put forward by fans.

Emphasis mine, but only so I can post a quote.

No one commenting on McLaren failing some of the mandatory FIA crash tests which put the board and Ron Dennis into a state of apoplexy, prompting Ron to take charge again and possibly meaning McLaren won't be at the first test?

Also, I think Ecclestone's reign has come to an end via the BayernLB trial... Teams should really try and get the business strategy/model right this time... the clock is ticking for 8 of them, and they've run on an outdated and unsustainable plan for far too long. I think Uefa Champions League is what they should be aiming to copy, the revenue redistribution scheme is quite right, with teams reaping benefits both from their performance and the tv audiences they attract. This quote from a F1Fanatic.co.uk user sums it up:

An overcomplicated gimmicky mess, run 50% in front of empty grandstands in countries who want to use F1 for political purposes, entered by teams who even at the front are barely financially solvent and need to be propped up by drivers paying for their seat, while a group of elite billionaires cream massive amount of money out of the sport never to be reinvested, while the opinions of fans are disregarded amid a toxic political situation which has had manufacturers deserting the sport in their droves in favour of sports car racing.

Here's a thought... FIA worked hard to ban the sealing of diffuser via energized airflow from the engine (the EBD and coanda solutions) but now, I don't know how much air volume is exhausted by the engine itself (at the rear) and how much from the electric generation components (ERSes, batteries and radiators) which sit just behind/around the survival cell... I'm sure that excess heat is going to get used for aerodynamic purposes... what do you reckon?

Random
January 25th, 2014, 06:03 PM
Excess heat from a turbo car means you aren't extracting as much power as possible.

FaultyMario
January 25th, 2014, 07:10 PM
But isn't a turbo working by using pressure from the exhaust volume?

Random
January 25th, 2014, 07:32 PM
Pressure and heat are related. You want the inlet temp to be as high as possible, and you also want all that high energy air to release its energy by spinning the turbine, not heating up the car.

FaultyMario
January 25th, 2014, 07:56 PM
Any correlation between engine RPM and turbine speed? RPMs are heavily capped, aren't they? 14,000 iirc.

Freude am Fahren

15,000, I think? And I believe turbine speed is limited as well, to 100,000 RPM.

A good technical read on what's going on from Scarbs: http://scarbsf1.com/blog1/2014/01/23/f1-2014-finger-noses/

Apparently the 'vanity panel' is the upper section of the Caterham. Huh. And the description of the Ferrari and Mercedes-style noses as the more ideal solution leads me to believe they'll be a bit more aggressive than others.

I love the Caterham's raw audacity, whereas the Torro Rosso and Force India really played it safe. The Red Bull doesn't have much of a finger, and is one of the most elegant solutions to that. The Mercedes looks the business.

If the FIA deems any of the designs unsafe then it could outlaw them even if they are meet the regulations and pass crash tests. However with little time before the Australian Grand Prix it seems unlikely that teams will be able to design and manufacture alternatives in time.

Oi, what a farce (as the diminutive cunt rightly put it).

For once, Ecclestone seems to be right on point. http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140131/F1/140139964?utm_source=DailyRacing20140131&utm_medium=enewsletter&utm_term=image0&utm_content=20140131-Ecclestone-calls-new-era-of-F1-a--percent27total-farce-percent27&utm_campaign=awDailyRacing

Also a good point about the "fuel savings" directed changes:

“They talk about saving fuel. They don't need these new engines to achieve that. They should get smaller motorhomes. Then they wouldn't need so many trucks going all round Europe. Mercedes are taking 23 trucks with them everywhere. If they really wanted to save fuel they should stop that.

FaultyMario
January 31st, 2014, 08:21 AM
Now all he needs to do is make F1 more friendly for privateers who don't carry 23 trucks around and won't leave at the first signs of stockholder panic. Or for privateers like Williams, Sauber and Marussia who've really helped make F1 an enjoyable show and are now in dire straits.

A little bit off topic,

But this fan made "simulation" highlights the main problem of the Stadium section at Hermanos Rodríguez: Trying to pack to many right angled corners into such limited space, instead, if they're gonna charge people for the right to sit there, they should at the very least have one braking zone by limiting the final speed at the end of the esses complex and try to direct the cars into a flowing turn towards where the peraltada used to be.

I'd love a pick for Nico, but the higher emphasis on winning in the points (and the stupid double points at Brazil thing), makes me pause a bit. Nico is very consistant, and could be in the best car at the start of the year. But I think Renault and Red Bull will get on pace eventually. Here's my early prediction for the season:

Red Bull and Ferrari will be abit off the pace in Australia, but probably not as much as some are predicting. Mercedes and McLaren will be the ones to beat down under. I think Button could be the one to look out for. I'm hearing the new cars will really favor the smooth drivers, and hardly anyone is smoother than Jenson. Nico and Lewis will be neck and neck the fastest outright from the start I think. But Lewis will struggle with tires (and having to drive economically) more than Nico.

Later in the season, I'm betting Vettel will be able to hang, as long as teh Renault can show reliability. But I'm betting it won't I think we'll see a tighter race in the championship this year with Button and Nico getting good points throughout and Lewis and Vettel grabbing chucks at a time, with Vettel having the most wins, but also the most trouble of that group. I think Ferrari will disappoint, but Kimi and Alonso will, as usual outperfom the car and still grab some good points.

I'd give Nico the best odds at this point, followed by Vettel then Lewis.

I'll adjust my predictions when they start proving completely wrong.

I agree with that. Mercedes will defo capitalize on RB's engine woes, and of their pair of drivers Nico seems to be the more stable, we will see brilliance from Lewis, but he has shown that he still lacks consistency.

Once the Renault cooling package is figured out RB will get on a streak again, and will most likely win the championship because of that stupid 2x points rule.

To everyone's approval.

And now someplace a bit more reputable (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/112504) is putting the pieces together too. Apparently it is (as the shirt would imply) a title sponsor deal. Awesome!

Fairly sure the last time I saw a bottle of it, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister.

Their website is plastered with "150 years" logos, so maybe it's some kind of anniversary brand rejuvenation thing. And I think they've been sponsoring Porsche 911s here and there.

I think Vermouth is just so out of vogue, it's not really noticed much.

Absolutely wonderful explanation of the new power units by Scarbs in case you are still a bit confused. I learned quite a bit. Great visualization too.

ugh, so only 600hp from the 1.6 engine itself?
the smaller 1.5's from 80's were doing better than that when restricted and in race-trim (and the cars were lighter, too)

any idea if increasing the amount of fuel is feasible for 2015 and beyond? I'd imagine the 2014 cars were designed from the ground up for 100L fuel tanks.
Will we they at least get +1000hp in qualifying

Freude am Fahren
February 13th, 2014, 08:23 PM
Nah. They may be going back to turbos, but don't for a second this will be anything like the turbo era of the past. I don't think we'll ever see F1 get over 750-800hp or so (total power, ICE+Hybrid) again.

They are greatly limiting fuel delivery rates.

balki
February 14th, 2014, 04:01 PM
will the max fuel flow be the same in qualifying as well?

FaF, less downforce and more weight (691kgs, jeez!) on top of the hp-restrictions. At some point they'll realize the cars are too slow and have to do something, lessened fuel/boost restrictions would be the easiest way out

Remember how bad KERS was it's first few years, how are the new HERS and KERS not going to have similar teething problems

Could no one finish in Melbourne? http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140310/F1/140319992?utm_source=DailyRacing20140310&utm_medium=enewsletter&utm_term=article0&utm_content=20140310-Formula-One-electronics-supplier-says-it-percent27s-possible-no-cars-finish-in-Melbourne&utm_campaign=awDailyRacing

Someone will finish... but it could be very interesting. LOL Most attrition in several decades is likely. Whomever gets the reliability right early on could have a big leg up on the competition. I do wonder what they'd do if every car failed to finish though. That would be an interesting moment if the checkered flag hadn't been shown, and all cars were stopped... or would they just throw the flag on the next lap after the last man standing went by?

It would certainly be neat to see a bunch of F1 pit crews actually work on the car during the race rather than just parking it and dropping the garage door. :)

Should be next lap. If over 75% of the racing distance full points will be awarded, otherwise only half.

I imagine if everyone broke down, they'd throw the checkered flag at the 2 hour time limit, unless everyone officially submitted their retirement paperwork. I think some would hold out though simply because there'd bound to be some debate on who is technically ahead if cars break down on the same lap.

Heh, Microsoft has started airing (or at least I just saw it) a commercial featuring Lotus F1 team, and them testing the twindick.

No mention of the car unable to do much of anything.
