Ahh, the good ol' days.

This is how I bought my first car, but no car since. It was amazing how much stuff changed between '94 and '97! Screw '94.

Yep. AOL quit mailing out 3.5" discs and started mailing CDs instead.

I confess the last time I was looking for work, in 2012, after six years at the same job, I picked up the Sunday paper and asked my wife where the wanted ads were. Turned out they were in my hand, but only about three pages long. The classifieds used to be the fattest part of the Sunday paper, not counting the ads and coupons.

I don't even remember the last time I handled a newspaper... which, thinking about it, is a little crazy! Probably a random event at my parents' house on a weekend at some point. The last time I actually I sought out and used one is definitely in the '90s. Maybe '98 or '99, looking for a place to rent before those classifieds moved totally online too.

They actually looked pretty decent in person - ca. 2000, one of those - wearing manufacturer plates, showed up at the Oreilly I was working at for a bottle of washer fluid.

No idea how you could get that registered in CA. My guess is that those plates are not actually registered to that vehicle.

EPA certified engine, probably--that's really what CA mostly cares about.

Could also just be that the local DMV was clueless. :D

If Dodge didn't create a specific "Powerwagon" VIN California wouldn't know or care. That was how my friend got his 164Q4 registered in California for two years... there wasn't a VIN sequence for AWD. It was only when he showed up to get smogged and the car wasn't flagged as "idle test only" (like an Audi or Subaru would be) he got hosed. :)

George
December 1st, 2015, 09:31 AM
I saw a white one around here a couple/few years back, and I think it was speedpimp who helped me ID it after the fact, from my description of a "mystery SUV", that I only saw from the side - so no obvious Dodge grille or what look like Caravan taillights in that ad.

I don't get all the fuss about where a car was manufactured or intended to be sold and operated. It either passes safety and smog inspections, or it doesn't. But then again, I'm a wacko libertarian, so don't listen to me.

But really, how is that Ramcharger any different than these two? If one is legal, why not the other?

(rhetorical question - not really requesting an explanation)

thesameguy

That's basically how it works, but how's the guy on the corner shop going to evaluate the safety of a vehicle and what its fuel consumption is? Vehicles meet standards, they are given approvals, and then the guy at the corner shop is absolved of that responsibility. A car from Mexico *probably* won't have those approvals - indicated by labels in various places - thus they are not legal. This particular Powerwagon clearly must, or it wouldn't have been allowed to be registered in California.

George
December 1st, 2015, 09:58 AM
Well, when I said safety, I wasn't thinking of crumple zones or Ralph Nader stuff, but just thinking about how they did it in North Carolina. The smog testing shop also checked brakes, horn, lights, turn signals, tire tread, windshield, etc. And if your car, like my first two, were too old to have smog stuff, they still checked all the other things, gave you a different color windshield sticker, and they charged less for the inspection.

Here they don't do any of that, as long as the car passes the sniffer test. No windshield stickers. Bald tires, no horn, busted-out brake lights, muffler dragging the ground, rust holes everywhere, no mirrors, and a cracked windshield? No problem! :D

Edited to add - they even checked headlight alignment in NC, and as I recall, charged a fortune to adjust it, even on older cars with exposed screw heads on the bottom and side for easy adjustment. I never had that problem, but it would come up in conversation. I'm thinking of a friend with a lifted 4x4 truck that had headaches getting his aligned by aiming them against his carport wall, and the guys at the inspection shop wanted [insert ludicrous amount here] to adjust them for him.

Slim pickings on the Denver CL today. I guess people don't buy cars as often this time of year, so people hold their ads until spring. Maybe.

Here's a real jem:

The problem isn't even so much CA as it is the 25-year-old importation requirement (although I thought CA was super uptight about all automotive regulations). If it wasn't available new in the US, it can't be imported until it's 25 years old, unless you want to go the 'show and display' route, and I want to say they did away with that clause anyway, but I'm getting old and I forget things.

So basically even if you can somehow get it registered, you run the risk of having it taken away and crushed if some Fed with a bug up his ass finds out about it anytime from now until the anniversary of it's manufacture date in the year 2024. Which seems unlikely, until you consider the possibility of some dickhole who knows enough about cars to recognize this thing and decides to report it. "Hey, if I can't import any car I want, this guy shouldn't be able to either."

I have always wondered if you could do anything useful with a Mustang II. I mean the single largest complaint one could level at the originals is crap engines, but that is easily fixable in 2015. The front suspension isn't *that* bad, and I sure believe TCI etc. has got to have something helpful for the back end. Aside from retrospective disappointment, what was really wrong with the MII vs. contemporaries like the Capri, Monza, and even the Z? Maybe just build quality?

That really pisses me off. They're just cars. It's not were talking about a collection of lions and tigers let out the back door every morning to run free until bedtime, or a guy who wants to register a Sherman tank with a flamethrower on the front for urban commuting.

If you can legally drive a sandrail, or a Bucket T with no seatbelts and a humongous dragster engine, why not a 1999 Ramcharger?

(again, I'm not expecting answers - just yelling at clouds again)

Considering Mustang II suspension components have found their way under all sorts of hot rods and kit cars, it can't be all that bad. I'm guessing the thin sheet metal and gas tank placement issues that plagued the Pinto is probably their top issues.

That Aspen might not be so bad if not for its Pep Boys rims.

And re: the Mustang II, I think it just looked too much like the Pinto for people to take it seriously. Didn't Cheryl Ladd drive one in Charlie's Angels?

Kind of on a same wavelength as the Ramcharger. Earlier this year I was in Lansing, Michigan and saw a Pontiac G5 sedan wearing Michigan plates and a decal from a Lansing used car dealer. G5's were only sold as hatches in the US, but were available as a sedan in Canada. Guess the only way it was sold/plated in Michigan is because of the make/model and no attention was paid to the body style not having been sold here.

I'm super tempted myself. You should get it!

I *really* don't want a red interior on anything that isn't from the '60s or earlier. And did you do quick inventory on how much red plastic there is in that car? It's not like it's "red upholstery" or "red accents," the whole interior is red. Even assuming you could find another complete interior, it'd take weeks to swap it all. I've done that job before on other cars and it's awful - replacing unobtanium trim clips and curing rattles from pieces that have been stirred from decades-long slumber. I'd really, really rather not.

But I would, had I not just bought the F150. Which was a necessity. Ish. I just wouldn't put the hurt on myself with another car right now unless it was the *exact right* another car.

Earlier when I was humorously ranting about the principle of not being able to register a 1999 Ramcharger even if it met emissions and all the lights worked, it had good tires, etc., I was thinking of something like this as the example of, "then why is this legal?!"

Check it out: wooden body, and that wood is probably old and very dry, so this rig probably weighs next to nothing - which it would anyway, a presumably powerful V8, no windshield wipers, and it has a slippery-looking vinyl bench seat with no visible seat belts. Better wear your protective cup if you'll be driving this one, boys, as a sudden stop could be painful, due to that rack-o-matic steering column! :twitch:

Again, the fact that I'm old makes me boggle at the prices. In my mind, the nicest Marlin in the world goes for maybe $10k, and that'd be after months of looking for a buyer. Also (in my mind), really super-nice Karmann Ghias start at about $3k.

M3 sedans are always good. The cool kids call that car an M3/4/5. ;)

Nice color combo, and, yeah, the original owner seems to have checked all the boxes. Doesn't have the sport seats ("Vaders") and the 16" lux package wheels and lux package steering wheel (same as the 328's) are lame, but other than that, looks sweet.

It would be a real unicorn if the original owner had ordered it without a sunroof. :D

Factory sold in the USA...probably. As cool as that car sounds, not having a radio is a big no-no for me. Not having one would get old real damn fast. Unless I had enough money to take it rallying and use it for it's intended purpose.

I think EAS refers to a company in Colorado Springs. I wouldn't drive that car in the area, but Elite Auto Salon has a certain ring to it and I'd drive it other places, where it wasn't a rolling advertisement.

When I was a born, my dad had a Porsche and my mom had a Celica. When my sister was born, dad got a BMW and mom got a CVCC. I don't know how that arrangement worked, but whatever. That '76 CVCC was in the family until '85 when mom got a Volvo. It was *mint* in and out. Really fond memories of that car - especially those few times my much-older niece drove it - poorly. The HORIF maneuver (Handbrake On, Reverse Instead of First) was her specialty and I *swear* those cars were almost capable of a full on backwards wheelie.

Of course, and they're sized just right to fit in someone's Christmas stocking.

But, don't you think they'd enjoy a really nice Suburban with a backyard Avalanche conversion instead? I mean, who could resist this beauty?

That Suburban-cum-Avalanche is the perfect vehicle to drive if you want people to stay out of your way on the highway. All it needs is a black brushguard to finish it off. The best part is when you do complete the pass and the person in the other vehicle sees the back and thinks, "Yeah, that person would totally have pushed me off the road without a second thought."

This unique Aston Martin Shooting Brake was designed and built by the renowned Swiss Aston Martin Heritage Specialist Roos Engineering Ltd., with the official sanction of Aston Martin. The car was built between 1996 and 1999 upon a customers request, based on a third series 1987 Aston Martin Lagonda.

My Accord is running fine with over 220,000 miles now, but I can't stop staring that this one and thinking it would be like a miniature version of my wife's Pilot in the same color. I'm thinking both my kids' bikes would fit in the back for trips to the BMX track, and I'm guessing if I folded down the back seat, my bike would fit in there too, to avoid the dreaded trunk-mounted bike rack I use now. That thing works, but it's a huge pain to install and remove, and it scratches the paint more and more every time I use it.

No, I'm not going to buy this one, but I am going to keep an eye out for these when it's time to replace my current Accord. I would be neat to find a low mileage example that has been quietly traveling through time in some elderly person's garage.

I know I'm excited about this concept, if not this exact automobile, if I'm looking at it again on a Saturday. Normally I only surf CL at work. :assclown:

As an ex-owner of a '94 Accord EX wagon, that car is plenty big for two people to take camping. Plenty. I liked my '94 a lot - had it not been gold I would have kept it much, much longer.

George
January 16th, 2016, 12:20 PM
Well, that's certainly good to hear. Thanks, TSG. Car-camping isn't on my to-do list, but he seller in that ad mentioned it.

I did some googling about these yesterday and most of the negatives I read about was rust, and specifically rust caused by water leaking down under the hatchback/tailgate and into the rear lights and then down into wherever water travels. I also read about an automatic transmission computer (huh?) that goes bad with age, considering these are 20-year-old cars, and that manuals are preferable for that reason. Okay, no argument there, and my current Accord is already rusting (very slightly, but noticeably) around the rear wheels so I'm not yet scared away from these wagons - quite the contrary.

Pretty sure one of those radios is actually the HVAC. ;)

George
January 17th, 2016, 11:52 AM
I thought of that, and that's believable, but push buttons instead of sliders? And what looks like a used-to-be-red sliding frequency indicator on both? Or maybe that's a hot to cold indicator.

I don't remember seeing those before in a '60s car, including in my high school friend's '66 Fairlane, which I would think would have similar controls to a '66 Lincoln, but, I certainly don't claim to be an expert.

Google says you are correct. Here's a better picture after googling 1966 Lincoln Continental dashboard:

http://valenticlassics.com/valenti/images_uploaded/vehicle/740_70/183_740_1353.jpg

I see it has a trip odometer as well. Pretty cool for 1966.

And now it's time for someone to say those first came out in 1927 or something like that. :)

I don't know for sure, but my guess is the little stubby lever sticking straight out above the radio tuning knob and under the shifter controls the passenger side mirror.

speedpimp
January 17th, 2016, 12:08 PM
That's an odd design for the HVAC. I know that at least a few early 70's Fords had the radio to the left of the driver, instead of the center of the dash.

George
January 17th, 2016, 12:25 PM
And the ignition key on the left side, too. I once drove a late '60s Ford pickup with a manual choke knob over there as well.

thesameguy
January 17th, 2016, 02:26 PM
Ford was going for a high-design interior, hence the HVAC/radio symmetry on the dash. Check out the previous iteration:

http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Lincoln-Continental-1962-dash-07.jpg

The left-hand ignition was common to all Fords through the late '60s. Since steering column locks were not mandated until the '70s (IIRC) ignition switch placement was a lot more variable. The Falcon's is on the left too.

George
January 17th, 2016, 03:40 PM
That's a cool interior, but I notice one thing that seems odd and unrealistic. Anyone else see it?

thesameguy

A woman in the front seat?

George
January 17th, 2016, 04:37 PM
Nope, something isn't right with the car.

And, it's not the huge ashtray that dominates the center of the dashboard.

You just don't see those much these days...well, I don't. I know you do in at least a couple of your cars. Probably the XR4Ti and Fiero, also.

How many ashtrays are in the F eetwoo ? A whole bunch, I'm guessing. I'm reminded of riding in cars as a kid and opening the ashtrays on the armrests in the back seat doors and seeing old cigarette butts and ashes. I'm glad my kids will grow up without seeing and smelling that. Sometimes there would be one mounted on the back of the front bench seat for the rear seat passengers to share. That's why I'm thinking there could be quite a few in the limo.

Edited one last time to add: I now see TWO things wrong with that picture. I missed one earlier.

Looks like it's in 'Drive' based on the angle of the column shifter. And the parking brake looks like its off, so it's either moving or it's resting against something. And is it just me, or does the hood ornament look like it's shoebox-sized?

Re: the Accord wagon, it's probably a little smaller than my TSX wagon, but I can fit my road bike in the TSX pretty easily without removing the front wheel. I used to be able to fit a road bike in my '03 Accord, though I had to remove the front wheel. I much preferred that to the trunk-mount bike rack (I hate those too) and I prohibit myself from having a roof-mounted bike rack because I'm pretty sure I'd drive it into the garage. Know thyself.

Scrolling through pages of funny GIFs in that thread, I never stopped to realize just how horrific that accident was, and I didn't feel right leaving it here once I did. I was trying to be funny, as usual, but that just wasn't anything to laugh at, and I'm glad you mentioned it.

Actually, it looked to me like the very corner of the trailer hit the overhang, so it's entirely possible that the overhang sheared off the very left portion of the truck and that the occupants were at least spared the weight of the overhang coming down, if not fairly serious injury.

There is a guy (I assume ;) ) not that far from the house that has three Novas like that in his driveway. Well, not quite like that - they look pretty used. But he does seem to like those Novas! Down the street is a house that has a Fiero parked out front - I think I've seen it being driven around because there just aren't that many Fieros around here. Down the street from that, is a house with an A100 van parked out front that I don't think has moved since the '90s. I remember it from when I had some clients in the area; the reason why it's so memorable is that one of the rear door windows has been replaced with a plexi "box" that extends beyond the rear of the van. I've always suspected the owner used to carry carpet or something in it - I can't figure out the reason for the box. I keep meaning to snap a picture, but the opportunity has never presented itself.

The area I live in is primarily OG Sac suburb residents... people who moved here during Sacramento's big expansion post WWII, so there are lots of people who maxed out in the '80s. It's a weird intersection of high property values and retirees with no reason to move. It yields a lot of '80s everyman cars in remarkably good shape. I enjoy it - but I'm sure all the new working rich residents with their Gs and 3s are less pleased. :)

speedpimp
January 23rd, 2016, 02:19 PM
Doubt it's for carpet considering that it is inline with the back of the driver's head. It is interesting though.

thesameguy
January 23rd, 2016, 03:33 PM
I was thinking an angle - from the passenger footwell diagonal and up out the rear window - the longest possible distance. It is, however, probably too small for a roll of carpet. Maybe a plumber?

speedpimp
January 23rd, 2016, 04:14 PM
Maybe. My uncle started laying carpet in the late '60's and for as long as I can remember he always used Dodge vans.

Doesn't matter how good the repair is, that would definitely be a detractor from its value.

I love these cars, but I don't think I could ever actually own one. In 2015 it's just special, not really a good performer. A 10-year newer E500 is cheaper and better. I just can never get myself to spend money on museum pieces.

How anyone can have a '79 Oldsmobile anything that they want six grand for and think one picture is sufficient is beyond me. You gotta work for every dollar over $1000 on a '79 Olds.

George
February 3rd, 2016, 03:55 PM
Since when is 130k in 14 years "very low" mileage?

You're probably directing that remark toward the seller and not to me, but that car would work for me and my would-rather-pay-cash budget because it only has 130K on it. I bought my current Accord with 138K on it and now it has over 220K and has cost me practically nothing to own.

If it is truly "almost flawless in & out", I would be pretty confident that car would be pretty safe buy, and a smarter financial move than buying something for $10 or $15K.

CudaMan
February 3rd, 2016, 11:54 PM
My question was directed to the seller. I wouldn't balk at a well maintained 130k-mile Accord either. Heck, most of my cars have had 120k or more on them when I bought them, so I play that game too. :) Just never had one called "low mileage" when it clearly wasn't.

So that Skyline is in SoCal, on Denver CL, wearing very recent Alaska plates. Okay.

And that Bel Camino - am I the only one who likes the 'before' picture better? Though it looks to have been well done, using the back of a Chevy pickup cab (?). And bonus points for pulling an RX-3 drag car with it.

That Firenza - those rims are ghastly. And in this day and age, if you can't manage to take more than one picture when selling a car online, you don't deserve to sell it.

And the plow truck - it does seem like it should just go with the property. Coolest $2500 plow truck I've ever seen, btw.

George
February 4th, 2016, 09:14 AM
Bel Camino

Whoa - that's the PERFECT name, of course! Why didn't the seller think of that? That would even be worth having custom badges made that looked period correct. I'm sure many folks would be fooled into thinking that was a vehicle you could buy, back then.

am I the only one who likes the 'before' picture better?

I wonder if the guy destroyed the value by cutting off the roof, or if he increased the value by creating a one-of-a-kind vehicle.

I'm thinking a restored stock wagon would be worth more than a full custom job, but I don't claim to know either way.

Speaking of plow trucks, I got to drive one the last two weekends. I had never driven a truck with a plow on it before, and it was the first time I've driven a manual transmission vehicle in YEARS. No problems there, I'm pleased to report. It was a first-generation Cummins diesel Dodge - maybe early '90s - with dual rear wheels and a stakebed and a big ol' Western brand plow up front - the kind that folds back in the middle when you're not plowing. At one point, I had to follow another 4x4 through a large muddy field with all six tires spinning at times in the deep soup and throwing mud all over the place. That was the most fun I've had in a long time.

I didn't know folks cared about Caddy limos newer than the early '70s or so...but maybe that's just my preference. I see 6-door limos on the Denver CL fairly regularly and will post any that look worthy of serious interest or humorous commentary.

Heck, maybe I should ditch my poor man's Accord and pick one up as a daily driver for myself. I could toss the whole family's bicycles in the back, and I'm sure my kids would gain quite the reputation at school when Daddy dropped them off in something like this:

1984 Cadillac Deville Limo - 6 door - $5000 OBO (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5425329117.html)

"46,000 miles. This is a really fun car. I used it for tailgating this past year at Buffs games in Boulder. Brand new tires. Brand new speakers and stereo included. Rides smooth."

http://images.craigslist.org/01111_lkxUYIwsPt3_600x450.jpg

Rear seating seems kind of tight, considering how much room there is back there...

http://images.craigslist.org/00l0l_1WAJbqSz1Dm_600x450.jpg

Then there's this...

Limo 4by4 ford f350 dually - $34500 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5402726058.html)

http://images.craigslist.org/00S0S_55qTbIwsjmr_600x450.jpg

But really, these things aren't even a tenth as cool as TSG's F eetwoo , and I trust you guys know I'm saying that sincerely, and not for pointless flattery.

Here's one from my Photobucket archives. I'm taking my little sweetie to a father/daughter dance at her school tonight, and I sure wish I had a spare limo in the garage for the occasion. This picture is a few years old and you can be quite sure she looks much different today than she did on this fun day in Parker, Colorado. As the F eetwoo has a new hood and roof, so does she have a full head of long hair now.

Scary car! Run awaaaaayyyyyy!

Potential buzzkill: 76 requires smog...was there any factory smog equipment on the RX-5s or was the thermal reactor on the RX-7 the first year of smog stuff?

KillerB
February 11th, 2016, 12:56 PM
Russ's point about it being a 76, combined with having nowhere to park it, and the fact that I'm getting married in a few months are all reasons I'm not going to Arcadia tonight.

Info is hard to come by, but I believe these had thermal reactors.

Fun fact - Arcadia is where I bought my B2600i, too.

EDIT: For all our edification, I asked the seller about getting it smogged in CA.

Hi joe,

The last time I checked, there was no problem getting it smogged. It's currently on non op now, but that's because of some minor exhaust leaks. After next year you won't need to worry about having it smogged again because if it's age.

I don't know about a thermo reactor m, but it does have a rotary engine (which makes it unique, and rare).

It's a great car and runs good. With a little tlc, this car will turn heads (as it does now)

Your more than welcome to come check it out for yourself. Just give me a time frame.

Non-op due to exhaust leaks... LOL. The guy seems nice enough but he's either uninformed or lying. Neither helps.

Not gonna lie, if this was a 1975, I'd be driving up after work tomorrow. But I don't need a car I potentially can't register.

thesameguy

I could see a rotary not getting a second glance while being slightly off - I'll bet that documentation in the modern, electronic format is pretty lacking for an old 13B, and if everything looks about right it probably wouldn't get a much attention. I've definitely benefitted from that in the past with the XR! The thermal reactor is definitely a potential sore spot, but I also would be surprised if nobody looked. Tell the guy you'll buy it if it comes with a smog... then you have two years before you have to worry again. ;)

Yes.

There's this group of people that is apparently still convinced that there's a rolling smog exemption in CA. :|

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older
Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs
Electric
Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs.

Yeah - the rolling exemption was killed a decade ago. It's '75 or older forever. Dude is smoking crack. Or lying.

KillerB
February 12th, 2016, 08:44 AM
Yeah, sad to say it, but this looks like he brought it into CA (those aren't period CA plates), and then couldn't get it smogged.

Once my fiancée and I are all settled, I'll start looking in earnest. Really I'm leaning toward another FC (87-88 Turbo II or 88 GTU) or an FD. I'm planning on going to SevenStock this year, so I'll be looking then.

I mean it's still rough -- needs new weatherstripping, there's pretty bad overspray that needs to be cleaned away, probably a goodly amount of Bondo everywhere, undoubtedly smells like Rich's dank sock drawer inside... but it's presumably a runner and it even looks like an actual 350 Olds V8 vs. a Chevy 350 by my untrained eye.
