I sort of dig the Fiero Caddy thing. Some late 80s Cadillac wheels would improve it an awful lot.
Plus sort out the terrible dashboard.

I totally dig those Zimmer Quicksilvers. They look like a Hot Wheels car. I like the idea of those updated wheels, but not those specific ones... more positive offset is positively called for. The dash aspect is troubling - there are several awesome dash swaps for Fieros, but murdering a low volume car like that Zimmer with one-way mods seems less than ideal. I think if it was not red, but maybe woodgrain or some other texture it would be okay with the stock Fiero dash. OTOH, a Zimmer with total redo including a V8 and a modern automatic (maybe a 4T65?) would be pretty awesome. I think that bodywork is just really let down by a 2.8 V6 and 3-speed auto. :(

I would love to do that, but not with my car! Although the *chances* of something going wrong are pretty low, the idea of letting my classic Cadillac bake in the sun and swim through the dust for a week doesn't sit well. I'm also not keen on letting it hang out with 60,000 people of varying, um, skill. ;) I've been paying a lot closer attention to the stories of burners that I know, and I would have no fun knowing my F eetwoo was left all alone with those people. ;)

thesameguy
January 13th, 2014, 09:37 AM
Guy says it has a clean title and 200k on it. Little higher mileage than I'd like, but OTOH if it's in generally good shape I'm not opposed to it. Only question becomes am I better off pulling the head and redoing "stuff" due to the mileage, or doing the cheap timesert fix and see where it leaves me. The kit to do a spark plug timesert costs nearly two bills, the timeserts themselves are only a few bucks. I'm generally not opposed to buying specialty tools to fix a car when there is a high likelihood selling the car will then pay for the tools. Who knows, maybe a spark plug thread repair kit will come in handy again in the future. I think I am going to look at it today.

Edit: reread his response... he says 200k on the car, but 75k on the motor. Not sure what that truly means (head gasket vs. total rebuild, etc.), but it's not a bad thing. :)

Definitely prefer history on the W124s.

The earlier ones had more head gasket issues. The later ones had more wiring harness issues. But, at that milage it should have had its wiring harness replaced already.

thesameguy
January 15th, 2014, 06:17 PM
Saw the first one. It has a few more scratches on the paint than the pictures suggest, but nothing even remotely serious. The hood has been repainted, and the repaint is starting to fail. I could detect no sign of body damage, and the radiator crossmember looks origina, so perhaps the respray was to cure normal pebble damage to the hood. Interior looks very nice, most all the accessories work properly, the transmission works fine, and it has plenty of power. The wiring harness and electronic throttle body were both replaced.

The driver's seat height adjustment does not work, and the power antenna is wrecked. It has a slightly shaky idle - if it was a four cylinder it'd feel normal. Maybe motor mounts, maybe something else (maybe just needs an ignition tuneup). The accelerator feels impossibly heavy - it takes an enormous amount of effort to move, meaning it's tough to get a smooth start - low speed modulation would be impossible. I have only driven four W124s including this one, one of those was a 500E, and I don't think any of them had the fancy throttle body. I'm not sure if it's normal or not - I don't see how it could be, but I also can't explain how it could have gotten that way! Rear tires are shot, front tires almost shot.

I was hoping for a "best of breed" that I could get for a slightly above average price (that is, $350 less than it is now), but I think it's fairly middle of the road and a $2300 or $2400 car tops. The tires are, amazingly, the big letdown because that's $400+ the second I buy it. Gonna look at some more. I'm not sure I can do significantly better, and quite sure I can do significantly worse. At $2000-$2200 I'd take a risk and take on its needs, but I don't think the seller is going to be happy with a 30% discount off his asking price. I wouldn't. That's rude.

#2 car has seriously messed up front upholstery. It's still on the table, but while it's there, I'm on the fence. Since I'm not in any *immediate* hurry, I could buy it and hopefully find new seats in the next couple months. Not sure I want to take that on, and $400 (a guess) later, I haven't really saved anything.

#3 car will hopefully be seen tomorrow AM.

This sounds like a slight, but I don't mean it as such... I cannot picture the future driver of this car in any SL. Frumpy and frequently plaid-wearing, I just can't even picture her getting out of one. If it wasn't for the fuel economy and safety issue, I'd be shopping 4.0 Cherokees or 2nd/3rd gen 4Runners. It's just an amazingly perfect fit. Actually, maybe I should go shop a 4cyl 4Runner. Hmmm.

KillerB
January 15th, 2014, 09:42 PM
I doubt the 4-cylinder 4Runners get better fuel economy than the six-cylinders. Smaller engine is balanced out by gearing and having to work harder for the same result, I would think.

thesameguy
January 15th, 2014, 10:12 PM
I suspect you're right. My motivation for the four cylinder would actually be the cost of maintenance, and not much more. She'd never benefit from the extra power, and would benefit from fewer spark plugs and a shorter timing belt. ;) A quick look at fuelly reaffirms my belief that you can't trust anyone, as fuel economy reports are all over the map, 16mpg to 20mpg regardless of engine. A 4.0 Cherokee is similar. A W124 may only get 20mpg, but it'll always get 20mpg. A '97/'98 Volvo will do much better, but they have all racked up crazy miles just like the W124s, and they're half as durable and mostly beat to shit. Heh. I wish I had an ounce of confidence in the automatics in a 3-series - that'd be another option.

I really don't know what to do here. I am trying to balance too many factors - safety, comfort, economy, reliability, and now serviceability. It's too much to balance at what I am willing to spend. I'd spend more if I had the *slightest* degree of confidence this effort would go differently than the last three. *None* of the cars she's had have failed completely, nor failed of their own accord - each of them has failed to the point of shaken confidence due to neglect and subsequent hamfisted repair attempts. If I believed for a second that wouldn't be the case again, I'd go get something MUCH newer that would have an easier time meeting the goals. I just can't stomach the idea of an ~$8k car being written off because she never changed the oil, or didn't spot the abnormally high temp gauge until it was too late. :| I can write off $3k cars every couple years and not feel too bad.

(The PT is now a $5k car, BTW - an extra $500 because she didn't get a flat fixed, and an extra $500 because the jagoff that changed the power steering pump wrecked the radiator fan.)

I wish I could just check out of this, but I can't. Of course, the sick parallel here is that if I ignore this problem it will get very bad (for me, personally)... while she ignores her car problems and they get very bad. It's much better to help her succeed than it is to support her when she's failed, obviously. I just really don't know how best to help her succeed I guess. FML. Yeah, but it's a 4L30E. Unfun, and like the '90s ZFs (Audi, Jag, etc.), not made terribly well. I just don't have a high degree of confidence that a ~15 year old 4L30 wouldn't totally self-destruct. If it was low enough mileage I'd be okay with that, or maybe higher mileage in a 4 cylinder. Just the thought of one of the bigger sixes generating very close to the transmission's torque handling for a couple hundred thousand miles makes me uneasy. I think most E36s and increasingly E46s have or have exceeded 200k, and I don't want to get into that. I'd rather a Volvo with the very good Aisin-Warner transmission. (Yes, I realize this is all an excessive level of analysis :p )

I'm looking at the 300CE either tonight or tomorrow. Dude selling it is a doctor and has owned it for a long time. He seems to be a decent guy, but told me on the phone "the speedometer stopped working over the weekend." Pretty sure that means the odometer stopped working too. My concern of course is that it actually stopped working 10 years ago and he's been racking up "free" miles on it ever since. Hard to say. In any case, I certainly can't hand over a car without a speedo or an odo, so that'd have to be dealt with. Off to research potential repairs for that! Maybe it's a negotiating point. ;)

I'm also almost ready to throw X300 XJ6s on the list. There is a apparently a British car shop a couple miles from her house. The I6 is pretty decent (although it too has timing chain issues), and like Benzes Jags often come in with very low mileage for their age. If I could find a '95-'97 XJ6 with low mileage (~120k-ish), that could work too. Maybe. I'd still have to get over my fear of ZF transmissions, though. :D

thesameguy
January 16th, 2014, 02:10 PM
I looked long and hard at Accords and Camrys, and anything worth owning is $4k+. Your Camry is probably a $4500 or $5000 car. Cars with double that mileage get almost $4k! I would stretch, except I fear that it doesn't address the repair scenario. I clearly need to find a good shop for her, and after a lot of looking there just doesn't appear to be any "generic car shop" anywhere near her. Just a bunch of shady places and chains (like Midas and Pep Boys). I could *totally* be chasing my tail, but I am really hung up on this aspect of the purchase. I am just really tired of panicked phones that go like "They told me I needed a new spark plug for $1, but now they're telling me my tail light fluid is low and it's going to be a grand!" I just want to have a shop available that is going to be fair and honest. This conundrum is *exactly* what caused me to start working on my own cars... trustworthy, competent mechanics are just incredibly difficult to find.

I told the #1 car guy I needed it yet cheaper but would hardly expect him to go lower. No response on that one way or another. I do know it's not a $2500 car - even though typing that makes me feel bad.

I just drove the #3 car, the coupe. The seller is a multiple Benz owner and very enthusiastic about his car. It's not quite as nice as it looks in the pictures, but it's pretty nice. A few scuffs, a couple dings. Nothing to get upset about. The interior is exactly as it's represented - really nice except for those two weird tears in the front seats. The leather up there is, how you say, rock hard. It's like sitting on outdoor furniture. "Supportive" would be a nice way of putting it. The headlights have been updated to the later aero style, which I missed in the pictures. The bulbs are signal brightness HIDs, which are bright on low but IMHO not a substitute for proper high beams. The transmission is slightly harsh between shifts, with a slight delay between F and R and R and F. It could be a fluid issue, it could be very early stages of failure. The CEL is, apparently, permanently on. I have no idea what would trigger a CEL on a 1988 Mercedes. He says he has the shop reset it every other year, smogs it before it comes back on, and then ignores it til the next cycle. The speedometer came to life once, probably as I slipped past 80mph - it popped up to 160 and then died again. Apparently they just replaced the bulbs in the cluster, and then it stopped working - and that actually turns out to be a somewhat common problem involving the speedo cable not going back in right. It has a small oil leak, probably the valve cover.

It drives very well - plenty of power with a responsive engine and transmission. Engine sounds good in & out. It's got a very firm ride, '80s sporty to be sure. No noise from the suspension under normal circumstances, though I didn't push it. Steering is tight and pleasant. All the accessories work - well, I didn't test the headlight wipers. Overall, seems like a solid car.

He is going to have his shop (a very reputable Benz shop) check the speedo and pull the CEL code and we'll go from there. '88 and 200k is older and higher mileage than I wanted, but OTOH an owner of ten years who daily drives the car and makes routine trips to LA is a solid character to buy a car from. My only remaining concern about this car is the age of the AC system. I'm a big fan of R12, but I'm concerned about it failing and being expensive to repair. Not sure how that will go. I'm going to see what he says about the two issues, and maybe we can come to an arrangement on repair and/or price. Overall, I'm not sure I can do much better than this car but it's still early in the game. I think it's a $2200 car for me, delivered with a repaired speedo and a CEL explanation. I'd pay a little more for a fixed CEL, under $2k as-is. He won't like that, but apparently he's moving out of state and only taking two of his four cars, so it's his crunch, not mine. ;)

The silver car? [Ad says '94]. That looks pretty clean to me, especially for its age. $2300 with no major mechanical issues would seem like a deal to me!

Still on the lookout for Miatas, though given time constraints lately I've been less keen to travel for one. These two just popped up locally. First question is does either of them have cruise. The leather in the '99 means it has an LSD, right?

The 97 looks like a "Leather Package" car, which should have cruise. It'll also have the Torsen. :)

Actually, looking at the 97 brochure, the only obvious options that car doesn't have are the AT and the HT. ABS was also an option, but he didn't post an engine shot, so it's impossibru to tell if it's installed.

Dude called back on the coupe. Repairs on the speedo and CEL are about $700 combined, consisting of about $300 in parts and $400 in labor. I personally like the coupe better - the W124 coupes are still a great looking car. In this instance I think newer trumps cooler and the sun-dried leather is the nail in the coffin. The '94 is getting smogged now. Assuming it passes, I'll pick it up tonight.

Not Craigslist (because New Zealand)

But going to look at this 2002 Corolla tomorrow for a friend ... it has nearly 300,000 miles on it (470,000km)

Should be interesting

Typically in NZ 200,000km is considered high miles for something like this type of car. Looked at a wagon version one with 270,000km on it last night, but the interior was too scruffy.

Well, that's the real problem with a car like that - every part you need is a quest, even minor parts at this stage of life. 20 years ago you could still find some R12's and things here and there as donors, but now, you're really on your own. In 15-20 years, we'll be getting into the territory where parts need to be made, not found. This is in part why I turned down many interesting cars like this over the years - I don't have time for tracking down a relay from a shop in Romania. I use Romania here because all parts for cars like this now come from Dacia parts bins.

I never really liked the R17 but I did like the R15 - sort of like a cheap (and slow) Iso Lele.

thesameguy

3D printers, homebrew CNC, improved thermoforming, cost-effective prototyping, and consumerization (is that even a word?) of complex electronics make keeping old cars running just not that hard. Sure, if you want a perfectly restored old car that's a challenge, but if you want to run around in a car that looks like an old car that's really not so hard. As long as the glass is intact, everything else is fairly well negotiable!

Now, I'm not that dedicated to an R17, but if someone was, they could do it.

The 4AGE is 117hp and DOHC

There's a 4AFE Corolla engine (common as muck over here) that would be about that power but still DOHC (just gear driven from one cam to the other cam) narrow head economy design.

I thought the one called the FX16 over there was the FXGT (or Gti16) which is 4AGE powered. Could be wrong though.

It's definitely in great shape, but that is probably the only angle from which the Marlin doesn't look like complete ass.

Yeah, Marlins have some really cool lines and and details that make it great looking from some angles, but they sort of fall down when viewed in the whole. I think a lot of of the issues would be mitigated with the same body on a slightly longer wheelbase- imagine the sideview from the youtube video with the rear wheel/arch moved back like 2-4 inches- It'd be a huge improvement.

In my opinion, and it's a qualified opinion but only an opinion, this generation of vehicles (along with the G bodies they spawned) may have been some of the classical General Motor's finest work. You'll find some little issues with them compared to modern cars, but basically they were some of the best all-around American cars ever made up to that time and, arguably, for some time after they went out of production. They were handsome, relatively efficient for such large vehicles (they were much more reasonable than the B and C cars, certainly), and could be optioned any way you wanted - they were some of the last Detroit cars where you really could à la carte everything. You could get this car as a four-door wagon with an SOHC six at Pontiac, a 455-powered monster hardtop at Buick, etc, etc. Ford and Mopar guys might dispute it, and let's face it they were built to 1960s standards, but they are something of a high water mark for postwar GM (1946-1979) and maybe even all mainstream American cars of that period.

A girl I dated in high school drove a 98 exactly like that, same color even. Even with the 455 it was not what you'd call fast, maybe "commanding" would be a better word. Hell of a car for interstate travel- Just mash the pedal and float to your destination. I drove her and 4 other friends the ~8.5 hours overnight to Denver to see David Bowie & Nine Inch Nails and then back the next day in that thing, no discomfort at all.
Jesus, that was a riot; I'm pretty sure that I'm not even capable of having that much fun anymore.

Surprisingly these are actually fairly rare cars compared to the Marquis.

I remember that there are two variants of the Monterey 4-door from 1973 or 1974 where the company literally only built one or two vehicles - I guess they were special order only. But they were sedans, not coupes. Can't remember where I got that information now though.

And be a pleasure to drive, too! It'd be a super third car for a reasonably talented wrench, but for an only car for someone who needs to be places... Well, I guess it depends on the driver. I'm sure the drivetrain will be acceptably reliable, so as long as you only need a seat, steering wheel, and pedals (which may or may not always be appropriately spaced) you're probably fine. But for someone who needs all the pieces to work as intended all the time, run. :D

That said, I might phone him up and chat about the rust situation.

Every time I get into a discussion with my partner about how many cars I've had and how many more I've tried out and not bought, we come back to a conversation I had with somebody about a 1974 Oldsmobile Delta 88. This was probably 1998 (?) - the car was in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (famous for being the location of Saturday Night Fever and little else), and said conversation began like this:

Alex: "Hello, I'm calling about the '74 Olds?"

Voice: "Yeah, it's a pretty fuckin' good car."

A: "Okay, can you tell me more about the car?"

V: "I dunno, it's my wife's fuckin' car. It's pretty fuckin' good."

A: "Can she tell me more about it? How many miles are on it?"

V: "You' not talkin' to my fuckin' wife, I'll do the talkin'."

A: "Okay, do you know how many miles are on it? Any rust?"

V: "What can I say it's pretty fuckin' good, do you fuckin' want it or not?"

Click.

Needless to say, my car hunting days did not leave me with the most faith in my fellow humans. I also got to know many sections of Brooklyn that nobody would want to go to - Canarsie, Sheepshead Bay, Cypress Hills, Brownsville, better than any normal person would want to.
