YW: Taking his wheel off leaving two nice pointy forks at eye level.

In fairness (or at least being fairer to him than him to me) he was carrying the bike around at waist level with the wheel off. It stems from a sop that our mass transit operator has offered to cyclists, which is "Bikes are not allowed in stations or on a train, but if the front wheel is removed then they count as baggage" (despite 98% of bikes being far larger than the dimensions of any "allowed" baggage on the train).

It's an idiotic rule and a bunch of self-righteous pricks have taken it upon themselves to act as moral guardians, perhaps in the hope that the operator will see the light, rather than realising that a two-wheeled bike which can be controlled is much safer than a useless contraption with only 1 wheel and a spare wheel with pointy forks flaying around.

But yeah, we agree.

The comic was designed to spread/reinforce hatred towards a set of people.

I don't usually take my bike on a train but I have a few times.

I do get my life threatened by people who can't handle just changing lanes to pass.

Pretending that bicyclists aren't oppressed for merely existing is either fundamentally ignorant or fundamentally dishonest.

Jason
January 24th, 2014, 03:19 PM
Yeah, don't take a bike on the DC metro during rush hour. Ooomph. I don't see how this is even a discussion. O.o

(I think it's actually against the law to take the bike on a bus or metro train in DC during rush hour, fwiw... and if it weren't it'd still be a dick move, because you'd be taking up space of about 6 people, if not more. I'd also call someone a dick for bringing a month's worth of luggage on the metro during rush hour.)

---

Also, OP, you act like cyclists are some sort of oppressed people. But out here in DC? They basically have no laws to follow. This week hasn't seen many cyclists on the road... but the ones I did see were riding against active traffic, forcing cars to halt to a stop, or swerve into other lanes. Also, as usual, blowing through stop signs and red lights, forcing cars, again, to halt... or barely avoiding pedestrians. People in cars aren't the only assholes on the roads risking lives.

Riding against traffic is idiotic but what does that have to do with bikes on a train?

Blowing through stop signs is bad but not as bad as multi-ton vehicles blowing through stop signs which I also see regularly and what does that have to do with bikes on a train?

Blowing through red lights I don't see. I sometimes see them go through red lights after making sure it's clear which is still not OK but what does that have to do with bikes on a train?

People in cars are killing about a dozen pedestrians per day in the U.S., to say nothing of the number that they injure, but again, what does that have to do with bikes on a train?

You're grasping at straws for ways to rationalize bigotry against bicyclists as a group.

I stop for stop signs. I wait at red lights. I follow the best practices recommended by the top bicycle safety experts in the country and yet I am regularly harassed and threatened by people who can't handle so much as changing lanes to pass me.

People getting on a train are just trying to get where they are going like anyone else. That comic is nothing but bigotry. It's a double standard. People carrying a bunch of packages would NOT receive the same vitriol.

Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.

A bike doesn't even come close to taking up the space of 6 people. You're full of shit.

Come to DC and throw your bike on to the metro with you. You'll see what I'm talking about. During rush hour, the Metro is literally packed standing shoulder to shoulder on many trains. You can say I'm full of shit all you want, but you're wrong. They don't tell cyclists to not bring their bikes on the train during rush hour because of some systemic oppression of your people, get the fuck out of here with your victim nonsense.

People getting on a train are just trying to get where they are going like anyone else. That comic is nothing but bigotry. It's a double standard. People carrying a bunch of packages would NOT receive the same vitriol.

I'm not rationalizing anything, I'm saying assholes are assholes, and cyclists aren't immune from asshole actions. That comic isn't bigotry, it is a douchebag move to bring a bike onto a crowded subway car. And yes, people bringing a bunch of shit on to the metro would get vitriol here. This isn't really relevant in San Diego, as most of the trolleys in San Diego (at least when I lived there) aren't packed shoulder to shoulder. Pull the stick out of your ass and stop being such a god damned victim.

This is the Metro during normal hours:

http://files.schuminweb.com/photography/2005/shades-of-gray/full-size/01.jpg

No one gives a damn if you bring a lot of crap on to the metro during this time. Plenty of room.

This is the Metro during busy hours:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UXriXRifjMM/TThuZCHqN3I/AAAAAAAAACU/9N9jS6Ke-gs/s1600/metro2.jpg

Where are you putting your bike? Cyclists here will take their bike to a less busy line/stop, or use a bus that has a bike rack on the front of it to get a further distance during rush hour.

But hey, lets keep ranting about how you're some sort of martyred victim. Maybe you have issues with dicks out in California not sharing the road nicely, and I can understand that. But cyclists do pretty well for themselves on the east coast.

Admins feel free to move my posts. I'll stop responding to the subject, as I've made my points and it's worthless talking to people who can't stay rational, or even take a ribbing.

People who have to get somewhere have to get there when they have to get there. If there's not room for them to get on then they won't be able to get on. It's first come first served. You have arbitrarily decided that they are undeserving of being to travel when it's convenient for them. What about the 350 pound person who takes up two seats and part of the aisle? Are you going to tell them that they can't ride during rush hour either?

This isn't really relevant in San Diego, as most of the trolleys in San Diego (at least when I lived there) aren't packed shoulder to shoulder. They are at rush hour. However, there are rules. On the old style cars they are only allowed at the ends of the cars and it's a max of two bikes at each end except the front of the front car which is reserved for wheelchairs. On the new style cars there is no limit other than space on the lower areas near the doors.

As for your "pretending to be a victim" bullshit, try having people threaten to kill you on a fairly regular basis for doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing. Try having people assume that you are a dangerous scofflaw simply because you ride a bike on the road. It's like assuming that a gay person is a pedophile or a black person is a criminal. It's bigotry plain and simple.

Taxi.
Or just get the butler to drive you.

Carpool with a friend.
Sounds better in theory than practice. Assuming you find such a person, no one likes the inconvenience of having to wait on their way to work or detour from their route. Then there's holidays, business trips etc. And two people in a car are still taking up more space per person than a guy with a bike.

Work from home.
I'm sure most people would absolutely love to do that but it's not always possible/permitted.

Ride all the way to work.
Or walk all the way? Time is a factor for everybody, just like cost, so let's not ignore them. Aside from that fact, if you ride a significant distance to work everyday during rush hour I see a career expectancy of about 2 years before you're off on incapacity benefits with people complaining that you're a free-loader.

drive your car.
Given gridlock is that really more of a problem or less of a problem than a guy with a bike on a train?

Taxi - expensive.
Carpool - often not available.
Work from home - not an option for most.
Ride all the way to work - What if it's a long distance?
Drive your car - The person may not have one or parking may be a major problem.

Of course, as always no matter how trivial the inconvenience of sharing with bicycles, it's still too much, no matter what.

In the rush hour scenario that Jason envisions on the DC Metrorail (which looks exactly like Chicago Transit Authority trains during peak periods), non-folding bicycles are rightfully banned.

These are attacks with lethal weapons.

In every case, the road was multi-lane and the driver was just angry about having to move over to pass.

Who has the superiority complex? Is it the person who uses potentially lethal force to control another person or the person who is angry about being assaulted? The arrogance of people who hate bicyclists knows no equal.

Yep, the author acknowledges xkcd as his (her?) inspiration.

I was originally inspired by map of the internet created by xkcd, showing most popular social networks as countries and regions, back in 2010. It was not my original idea, but I extended it to such a scale for the first time. I used photoshop for the majority of drawing.
The base style of the map was inspired by the National Geographic Maps, I also used Winkel Tripel Projection and similar border coloring fashion.

Nah, I only (99.99999%) really do civil stuff. But yeah, if I were allowed to advertise in such a manner, Slayer might well feature.

I'm watching the debate now. How the fuck Nye hasn't reached over and pulled this dipshit's heart out through his mouth I'll never know. More than once he has answered "because God".
It's also pretty telling that the science jokes Nye made, while delivered poorly, weren't getting many laughs yet the "there is a book that explain that available now" lines brought the house down.

So infuriating...

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't force him to believe its 2 parts hydrogen, 1 part oxygen

Trying to overtake a snow plow.

Which is a stupid thing to do, not just because it's a dangerous overtake, but wouldn't you be safer on the plowed road.
I know we had a car with some ski lifties go off the road and all died, they overtook the plow and crashed a couple of kms later.

But when Super TruckerŪ is behind the wheel, nothing, I repeat, nothing can get in his way because he is the most important person on the road and he will not yield for anyone because he is SUPER TRUCKERŪ!
