Gotta start a thread on this, AMIRITE?

I'll begin. ICED EARTH, why was it so hard for me to find your CDs in HK? Why did I foolishly never take the risk and buy one? Why have I only now (via Spotify) discovered your greatness, despite being interested in listening to your stuff for yours?

As for you, Stone Sour. I recently discovered (via a random physio I saw one weekend) your House of Gold & Bones, of which I prefer Part 1. Good stuff too.

Should have said something while you were here.

Even got spare CDs of some albums after getting rereleased deluxe versions later.
I found Horror Show really grew on me. Imhotep, Dracula, wolf.
And I must remember to get tix to their Sydney show. Only 2nd time they have been here.

Currently spinning Nocturno Culto's Gift Of Gods "Receive". Otherwise known as Ted Skjellum, one half of DARKTHRONE, it's a fantastic little 4 track EP that oozes 70s metal cool.

Next up, Lurker Of Chalice' self titled album. Looking forward to it as I dig Jef "Wrest" Whitehead's main band; Leviathan.

I agree that the most recent albums by Amon Amarth and Accept are both exceptionally good. I've never heard Kvertlak. I've heard of them, but with the weird name I figured they were black metal, which I've never been able to get into. However, Slayer mounting G n R and having metal babies is something that sounds right up my alley.

My latest pick up was the new Grand Magus album Triumph and Power. It's really quite excellent and will be getting quite a few listens from me in the coming months

Mildly shittier vocals and horrible guitar work. And a changed running order. That's it. Fuck this.

Ok I've divided it into two lists - "Must See" and "Bonus"

On the Must See list are ...

Amon Amarth
Gwar
Korn
Rob Zombie
Mastodon

In between I'll do my best to squeeze in ...

Placebo
Alice in Chains
Green Day
Eagles of Death Metal
Dillinger Escape Plan

Please note that most of all is decided by clash, not by actual preference ;)

G'day Mate

That lineup is a little different to the Adelaide one actually, but close enough.

Apparently Gwar are difficult to schedule because they always tear up the stage so wherever they are they need to be the last ones there. In Adelaide they are on stage 4a but they have Newsted after them. Also, Amon Amarth are on first thing at 11am so that's a bit annoying.

Reverend Jim

Yeah, Korn ... not that relevant to me these days but I was a fan about 10 years ago and I've never seen them live so I thought I'd check them out.

You wouldn't see Rob Zombie? He puts on a great show - last time he was throwing inflatable sharks into the crowd. That day he had Joey Jordison drumming for him, who had also done a Murderdolls set earlier in the day.

Rob

Rob Zombie's music is bland as fuck though. YEEEEEAAAHH!

I've had the misfortune of seeing Down live before. Great on record, the most boring drawn out show ever. Eleven minutes of down time (natch) between some tunes and Phil's pointless yammering about nothing in particular.

100% correct. I've seen Phil at 5 or 6 shows with different bands over the years and the common denominator within that sample was Phil just blabbering nonsense at the crowd.

Killswitch is fucking phenomenal, the place was jacked and they played every one of their popular songs. I went into it a little worried as I'm more on the Howard side than the Jesse side, but Jesse belted out all of the good songs from Howard-era just as well. Hell of a stage presence.

Disappointed they didn't do Holy Diver though. :(

Trivium was frankly a little meh. But it was mostly due to the mic's being up WAY too loud, so all the vocals were loud, muffled, and distorted over top of weaker music. Shame.

Battlecross kicked my fucking ass. Didn't understand a goddamn word, but they got some chunky riffs so that's fine with me.

My wife also picked up a Dio tribute album for me, "This is Your Life". Not amazing, but definitely entertaining. Tenacious D are predictably extremely reverent.

Loved the Metallica medley, Corey Taylor's Rainbow in the Dark, and Anthrax's Neon Nights. The others were serviceable. What pissed me off was Rob Halford completely phoning in Man on a Silver Mountain, when Ripper Owens would've done a TREMENDOUS job, and he wasn't even on the album.

Agreed, I expected a hell of a lot more out of Rob Halford.

In other news, I'm feeling ultra metal for finally having picked up Mayhem's Deathcrush, but then decidedly non-metal for having done so as an MP3 album off Amazon which I promptly streamed to my Chromecast. Yuppie Black Metal for life, yo.

Metal is metal, no matter how you listen to it. Listening to Celine Dion on vinyl or on a beat up tape deck in a beat up truck does not make it metal.

Dig the original version! It starts out slower than Miller's version, but take the time to listen to the whole thing and the lyrics if you can stand the non-metal-ness of it.

While Steve Millers version is fantastic and a great cover, Paul's original version is out of this world. It's a very deep and heartfelt song. Paul, who was completely blind by the age of 20, sings of his experience on an airplane trip from Boston to Montreal to play the first-ever date with T-Bone Walker's band.

Any thoughts on Arch Enemy's new singer?

tigeraid
June 13th, 2014, 11:22 AM
I prefer her, frankly. That always seems to be the unpopular opinion with metal bands, but I find her more musically consistent--I'm enjoying the entire new album, instead of thinking a few of the songs having vocals that are kinda scratchy/screetchy and hurting the ears.

Time is Black is a spectacular tune.

EDIT: Mind you, I also have a soft spot for The Agonist, who Alissa used to sing for. Might be colouring my opinion a little. Between her and Stu Block, Canada's producing some killer vocalists these days! :rawk:

Timing! I just listened yesterday without knowing thyey had a new album or singer.
I must admit I'm not an Arch Enemy fan, I do prefer my vocals to be clean. Actually getting more into operatic style the last couple of years.
But I liked their new stuff, musically as well as the singing. She seemed to hold her own!

Hmm. The little I've heard of her work with AE--I think I prefer Angela's harder edge. Might just be that the songs I listened to were, overall, not as heavy to begin with.

After one listen, it has its moments, but doesn't seem tight and cohesive like Z1. Z2 seems like a metal (:hard:) Broadway musical with fart jokes. Listening to Dio...
but its been a whole 3 songs since Iron Maiden (and had 5 of theirs today)

Probably because my itunes has over 300 songs under my "iron maiden" playlist, but that does include Bruce Dickinson and covers of Iron Maiden (including Maiden uniteD, Dream Theater, Iced Earth and a couple of "Call to Irons" cds)

That comfortably beats out my next largest band playlist, Megadeth with 250, then Iced Earth with 200

So throwing it into a random play tends to come up with a fair bit of Maiden.

G'day Mate
June 16th, 2015, 10:36 PM
Off the topic of metal, but I've got 320 Smashing Pumpkins songs in my playlist now (which is my largest grouping), but I've only heard 3 in 7 hours of listening today. Nick Cave is my next biggest, but only with just over 200 songs.

I like to arrange my random playlist with the following rules ...
- must have been played less than the current maximum (which is 4 at the moment)
- must not have been played among the most recent 200 songs
That way I cycle through them all roughly three or four times a year (listening at work only) and newly added songs get played a few times each cycle. Only 20 full days worth of listening left in this cycle ...

New World Tour, New Album

The song in this video is the first one from the new album, which they debuted in Yokohama a few days ago. I heard it briefly on a video that was taken down and it sounded amazing.

ALSO, they played a few seconds of these notes at the end of a concert several months ago, and people caught on to it and made loops of it because it sounded so good.

Fans don't know whether Babymetal already had this song being planned at that time, or if they responded to the reaction and made this new song with the same sound.

RIP Lemmy. :hard:

If you haven't seen the documentary about his life. You should. And when I say you, I mean everybody.

Kiya had her 20-week scans today, and the good news is that our baby is a metal head

The Rainbow up in West Hollywood was planning an all day public memorial service for Lemmy. My wife tells me that the response has been so large, it's basically turning into a week-long entire-Sunset-Strip thing.

Amon Amarth just completed an epic-level trolling of reddit and facebook to promote their new album. I fucking love these guys.

In the timeline of the band’s profile there was a photograph depicting the round face of a sunglasses-wearing, neck-bearded male with tiny teeth; here was a man who assuredly fit the profile of “basement dwelling nerd”. The rumors between the users were mostly funny comments about the face of the guy, and some of them remembered the hacking of the Lacuna Coil Twitter account, done a few weeks ago. A few hours later, another picture of said fellow was uploaded, showing his empowered battle station with multiple screens. Intriguingly, all of these posts mentioned the title of the band’s upcoming album Jomsviking, scheduled for the first half of 2016.

It's a near complete departure from their metal :hard: side, but I'm really enjoying The Astonishing. My first listen was a little underwhelming, but like most DT music it took more than that to start to understand and appreciate it.

I still miss Portnoy's musical style on the drums, and I wish the mix didn't bury Mangini and Myung so much. Otherwise, top notch album.

I'm not really a metalhead and some people may not take this group/phenomenon seriously....but the new Babymetal album "Metal Resistance" is insane...a few songs I can't get into, but most of it is really great.

I enjoy them in small doses. Kawaii metal! :hard:

I liked that they used Dragonforce as their backing band* at a show last year (?). :D

*not that their regular band is bad or anything--quite the contrary, IMO.

New Amon Amarth kills. Been listening to it a lot. They're actually experimenting and branching out a bit, dare I say. Even have a tune with Doro doing backup vocals!

New Grand Magus is on the horizon too. My body is ready.
