First, here's the album hosted on Google: Glenwood Gardens Snow Walk (https://plus.google.com/photos/+KeithHeard/albums/5970287722986645073)

Now let's try the forum's album tool:

Ok, just had to drag them into the attachment area, can't embed an album or anything

Does this link to my album work? http://gtxforums.net/album.php?albumid=3

My laptop had problems to shut down and it took a while and I was bored...
So I grabbed my Lego tow truck and it towed my car shaped mouse.

I just noticed how heavily the forum processes the images, oomph. Might have to not upload directly here. Sorry for the low compression quality. :|

You're apology's not very noticeable dude! Awesome pictures!

By the way I'm not sure why the "share your album" thread was not the new "post pictures here" thread...poor choice of title?

Crazed_Insanity
February 12th, 2014, 07:31 AM
Yeah, probably. I thought you want people to share music albums! Naturally I ain't about to click into that and participate in such illegal activity! :p

Somebody probably ought to merge the 2 threads.

Both teams were dunking during the warm-ups, a lot, but they had 2 or 3 different sets of warm-up periods, so I don't know.

A cousin had an outdoor wedding, which gave me a good excuse to rent a 300 2.8 II.

Good news, what a lens, if I wasn't married it be very difficult to not buy one. On a 7D it was a little too long for how I was using it, but just had to step back farther. It didn't feel too heavy, even if it is 80% heavier then a 70-200 2.8 I, but the longest stretch I used it was 2 hours. Felt balanced on a 7D w/o a grip.

Bad news, after taking pictures at the rehearsal, the bride's dad told me to not take pictures at the wedding. He'd already paid for a photographer and didn't want me getting in the way. First time in taking candids at 50+ wedding that's happened, so it threw me for a loop and didn't know what to say. Oh well, saved me time processing wedding pictures.

The wife using it, it was too heavy for her. Only 25% of her shots were in focus.

That's fair enough, but usually it's only mentioned if the photographer requests it, and should usually be prefaced by "Look, I don't mind if you take a few shots for our memories, but...". A big white lens can cause issues, and it's usually best to leave wedding pics to the pros. Now that I have the XT-1, it's pretty much the only thing I'll take to weddings, if I take a camera at all. I also try and stay out of the way of the pros, after all, they're doing their job and I don't want to be "that guy who's even worse than Aunt Ethel with her Powershot and/or cousin Candice and her Chanel-cased iphone".

Over the last year, continuing through now, I've been trying to document everything going on in Detroit, musically.

A few things have become clear... Punk's not dead, you just need to find where it's hiding. And there are two things I need... Sleep, and a camera that does better in low light.

fire? if so you're overexposing it >.>

Sad, little man
August 3rd, 2015, 12:42 AM
Fire dancing, specifically. And honestly, it's nearly impossible to know quite how well exposed it's going to be because the amount of flame coming off of those things varies hugely from moment to moment. But alternatively, if it was less exposed, the people watching it wouldn't be as much a part of the photo.

Rikadyn
August 3rd, 2015, 01:12 AM
you'd just bump the blacks and shadows in post, but forgetting that i'd still try to be 2/3rds or so a stop down, and try to grab some detail from the flames themselves, plus introduce a bit more shadow to the scene might give it more of an active feel. Basically shoot it a lot at different levels :P Fire itself is fun to shoot.

In reality, I'm too lazy, unskilled, and under-equipped to do the kind of photo manipulation you're talking about with the multiple images Keith. But instead of admitting that, I'm going to just say that I don't do it because film cameras something something purist something something cheating...

And to answer your question, yes it gets very tiring being such a hypocrite all the time.

Rik, I don't feel that you ever get the quality and detail in the darker areas by lightening them up after the fact vs actually taking the photo that way originally. Unless of course you do something like Keith said.

Kchrpm
August 3rd, 2015, 07:31 AM
I didn't know you were using a film camera, my bad. It's usually very easy with digital cameras, it's just a feature you turn on where every time you press the shutter it takes three pictures instead of one.

Sad, little man
August 3rd, 2015, 07:57 AM
No its digital, I was just saying that some elitist people would probably say that pulling that trick with a digital is kind of cheating in the grand scheme of photography. I don't feel that way, but it's a nice stance to hang my hat on instead of admitting I just don't have the skillz to do it.

Also, at the size of photos that modern cameras take, taking three photos for every one press of the shutter would eat up tons of storage.

Kchrpm
August 3rd, 2015, 08:17 AM
No skills involved, it's usually just a setting you turn on and it does it automatically.

At the track I was using the 10 fps burst mode to this weekend, that was burning through the end of my 32 GB card, but just meant I had to delete some year old pictures (and get rid of the ones that suck from the burst shots).

Sad, little man
August 3rd, 2015, 09:03 AM
Do the cameras automatically combine the photos into one to achieve an even exposure across the image?

Kchrpm
August 3rd, 2015, 09:31 AM
That's a different option.

That's HDR. You can try that, but, honestly, unless you have a *really* nice camera there's no way it will keep up with the flame, and I don't know if they are smart enough to know you want the flame to come from the darkest frame but everything else from the lightest frame. If you choose that, it will take longer between pictures, but you'll only have the one image at the end, so it will save memory

I was just talking about getting the three pictures and then choosing one later when you have it on a larger screen and see the details.

Google is doing weird things.

I can see the image on a different device than the one I made the post with. I use the same method to post images for my friend to use on her website, and I've never had a problem.

If you look at the image URL in my post, it's not the same URL you get when you right click->open image in new tab.

I don't know what the solution is. Trying the URL from open image in new tab. I'm pretty close to just giving up, I don't feel like using yet another service to upload photos just to post here when most folks have me on Facebook as well.

But isn't that just going to darken all parts of the photo evenly? I would think you would still end up with parts of that photo being over or under exposed.

No, it kind of works like polarized sunglasses: it can cut down on reflections/glare and bring out color because of it.

Wait a sec... Isn't what Kch is taking about called a polarizing filter? And Cam what you linked to is a graduated ND filter, not just a straight ND filter. I have an ND1000 filter, and all it does is cut down on the light coming in across the whole frame. No tricks, no polarization, just a simple reduction of all light, period. Isn't that why it's called a neutral density filter?

Cam

Yeah in my case I did three exposures, then combined them in photoshop... took a while to get the settings right so it didn't look too crazy, although I may have still overdone it a bit!

A graduated filter would have been nice to try, was thinking I needed one as I was out there shooting! Would have been interesting to see how the results would have compared.

Glam rock as f*ck.

I have to say, I am pretty astounded by the low light photos that the 6D combined with a fast (1.4) lens can take. This band had absolutely no lights shining on them in this bar. I mean nothing. It was almost kind of weird because you could barely see them on the stage. They were just silhouettes really. Initially I was pretty bummed that they played with virtually no lighting, but I just decided to give it a shot anyway. Sure enough, the center AF point of the 6D just locked right on to facial features I myself couldn't even make out in the viewfinder. Completely amazed by what the camera and lens can do in low light.

Since you (SLM) seem to be taking a keen interest in photography, I felt inclined to give you some feedback of your work--a critique. I hope to give you some helpful insights on how to make your photos stronger. I know it is unsolicited. Before you say, "Who does this guy think he is?" just remember that I've been a professional artist for almost 20 years. Most of my experience is layout, which includes setting up shots and cameras for (animated) TV productions. I've been a amateur photographer for ten years and have had a few pro photographers and other artists (better artists than me) tell me that I make good photos. One of my photography professors even suggested that I pursue photography as a career.

1.) Stop being down on yourself. You make some good photos. You say that many people like your photos. You seem to be proud of your photos, otherwise, I think you would not be showing them here. I think they could be better still.

2.) Stop being down on photography and photographers. You are giving me the idea that you seem to think that good photography is only about the quality of the equipment and simply pointing and clicking. It is a legitimate art form that takes thought, consideration, patience and passion to do well.

3.) Here are some suggestions on several of the photos you have already posted here if you want it. These are my personal preferences, however. Keep taking photos. Good luck. :)

My concurrence with Cam's comments comes with no merit or experience, but I agree with what he has said and appreciate the time he put into the composition suggestions (especially the drawn in elements!).

Cam, I think I have more to say later, but just a few things up front:

I agree with almost everything you said. The thing of it is, most of those shots or musicians were taken at high ISOs, and I don't want to crop them much or their graininess would become more and more apparent. There are many of those shots I wish were composed a little differently. But, the only AF point on my camera that is sensitive enough for most of the lighting conditions I was in is the center one. And being that I was using wide apertures in most of the shots, focusing and then re-composing probably would have screwed up the focus because the person almost definitely would have moved enough to be out of focus if I did that. So, I wish the composition were different and/or the photo was cropped more on a lot of those photos, but there are reasons that's not too possible.

In some ways I also feel like just cropping a photo itself is cheating. I mean, the photos are high-res enough that I could crop the daylights out of them to just show the good parts, and you would never know when they're shown at this small size (except for the ISO graininess.) But then that's kind of a lie in a way, isn't it? I mean, if it's heavily cropped, then I'm passing off the photo as if that's the photo I took with my camera, but it's really not. I didn't really compose the photo that well or that tightly, I'm just passing it off like I did.

Oh and that last photo was taken with me standing in a very tight crowd of people, with one row of people in front of me. I probably would have liked to get the whole guitar in the photo as well, but someone's head was probably there.

I'm not trying to say that you should exclusively rely on the crop tool. I'm saying that you should consider the composition as you are making the shot. Got a zoom lens? Zoom in or out to include or exclude any elements you want or don't want. Not only consider your subject, but what is happening around and behind the subject. Notice what is near or at the edge of the frame. I normally use auto-focus single and centre-weighted metering, then recompose before making the shot. However, if you are making shots of action, you may want to consider using auto-focus continuous and average metering. I understand that conditions often make it impossible to get the exact shot you want. The conditions you shoot under when you go to concerts are challenging. You know you need more light, but the only way you will get it is to use a flash. I hate using a flash and avoid it if at all possible. I also think a flash during a concert would be obtrusive. I understand there is not much more you can do.

Or maybe there is. Experiment. Use a longer exposure and make more shots. Yeah, you will get a lot of blurry photos. Chances are good that you will get some cool shots too. It has been my experience that the ratio of good to everything else is 1:10. On average, for every ten or so photos I make, I only consider one to be good. It's not cheating, that's just the way it is. With digital, you don't have to be concerned with wasting film. Why not take as many photos as possible? Not every work has to be a masterpiece. Like other forms of art, practising and experimenting helps you get better. You will make a load of crap in the process, however.

Recently, I compiled a folder of what I consider to be my best photos to show a photo prof at school. I spent two days looking through the ~20,000 photos I have on my computer. Through judicious selection, I ended up with a mere 240 photos to show. However, I had three categories: portraits, landscapes and cars. In the end, a mere ~1% of my photos are good. :(

That is one of the wonders of my undiscerning eye: not only do I enjoy a lot of dumb/bad movies, I also think a large portion of my photographs are good.

Don't ask me how many are great, though, I might cry :(

I mostly agree with Cam, though some of it was a tad nit picky considering the subject matter. I think street photography and concert photography tends to be a bit sloppier than portraiture or static subjects, and allows for more wiggle room organically.

But, I don't have nearly the same qualifications, so take my opinion with a dump truck of salt.

Regarding cropping. Cropping isn't cheating any more than using a tighter vs wider lens is. Even 'real' photographers back in the film days cropped in the dark room. If you're shooting with a prime lens, its especially difficult to avoid the need for cropping.

Use a longer exposure
Here I should have said, "Use a lower ISO." to minimize the grain.

Jason, I consider you a pro photographer, so your opinion probably matters more than mine. I've already mentioned that I understand that it is difficult to get the best shots in difficult situations, such as a concert.

Regarding grain... I actually add grain to most of my photos, it breaks up the (imo) surreal nature of a very clean digital image. Its one of the things I've always admired about film, is that it has that grain to it, providing false detail in empty areas, and softening up fine details that can be otherwise distracting to the overall scene.

I haven't made money off of photography in years, I'm not a professional. I pay my bills via (really boring) graphic design.

I still haven't really addressed all this, but I'll say that maybe I'm starting to give myself more credit for the photoy things I do with camera machines.

This was taken at f1.4. I don't think the focus is perfect, but it absolutely is not easy to capture someone moving around this quickly in sharp focus at 1.4, which was necessary due to the lighting conditions.

I suck at taking pictures of flowers. But one of the places I did visit was the Nebuta matsuri museum in Aomori where they have some of the floats which are used in the parade. I wasn't expecting much but was blown away with how amazing they were and you really can see how closely they're related to manga/anime. I don't think my photos did them justice but anyway, here's a boat.

The lighting at this show was very intensely colored. After some fiddling around, I realized that the photos looked much better in black and white. Now I feel like a fraud for resorting to the gimmick of making a photo black and white. Not hating myself so much would be really nice. Enjoy...

FFS, I really want to encourage you, but you make it really difficult. B&W is not a gimmick. It is a legitimate artistic choice.

Try playing with levels to make your lights lighter and increase contrast. If the sensor noise bugs you, you could try a noise reduction function in whatever image editing software you use.

I know, but I have convinced myself that any photo I take that someone likes is either the result of tricking them into thinking it's a good photo through creative editing, or the fact that it was simply taken with a nicer camera than most people have. The idea that it's because of some unique talent that I have is something that I can't believe because I don't think I do.

On the plus side, this does continually push me to take as good of photos as possible so that I might be worthy of the recognition of taking them.

Anyway, I'll post the same photo in color later. I really don't think it's possible to tweak it into being a really good color photo.

It's a combination of equipment, talent, and practice. Just like every other artistic endeavor in the world. I'm sure you understand at this point that your unnecessary self-flagellation is insulting the other artists, but what concerns me is that you still think it's ok to beat yourself up for stuff, and it's important enough to do so that you ignore the fact that you're insulting others.

It's ok to think your work can be better. That's what drives the greats to be great. You can also, however, appreciate where you are at the same time. You're following a path, and making progress towards your destination. You should not be ridiculing yourself because you haven't gotten there yet, you should try your best to enjoy the journey because the reality is that no one ever truly reaches that destination. If you can't enjoy the path, then maybe it's not the right one for you, because in reality the path is all there is.

Sad, little man
June 13th, 2016, 12:59 PM
Nope, mentally I cannot just appreciate where I'm at. It is probably not possible for me to convey what this is like without you actually being inside my head. But yes, this is the right "path" for me, because it is one of the few things I can squeeze any enjoyment out of at this point.

These comments are not meant to insult others. These are the things I feel about the photos I take. The photographer I mentioned that takes the great photos, all his stuff is black and white. So making these photos B&W, all I could think in my own head was "Oh, you're just doing this to be like him," even though I really felt they looked better this way.

These comments are not meant to be a critique on others' photos. If people want to twist them around and project it onto their own photos, I can't stop them from doing that. Some people here seem capable of recognizing this and not letting the things I say about what's going on in my own head get to them. Other people seem very bothered by it, and I'm sorry about this. But how I feel is how I feel. Sure, I could just completely stop talking about it, but I kind of need an outlet for it because it is very debilitating mentally in a way.

Anyway, back on a technical note, here's the same photo with the same lighting adjustments, just with the color put back in. If someone thinks they can make this look decent as a color photo, I'd certainly like to know how. I wasn't really able to. The lights were very intensely colored LEDs, and they just washed everything out. Even just looking at people with the naked eye you could tell the lights were putting out some wavelengths that were just messing with everything. Even the autofocus wasn't working that well, despite there being plenty of light to use for focusing. I dunno what it is with those LED stage lights.

I think the colour one is better, the lack of contrast doesn't do the B/W one any favours, though better/different processing could help a bit. More importantly the lighting often sets the mood for a venue, stripping it of colour removes a lot of that imho. It's the reason I rarely use a flash.

Great shot! The noise is under control because you've exposed it correctly. For those clouds try the recently free Nik collection. (https://www.google.com/nikcollection/) Dfine is their noise reduction software - it's really effective and rarely needs much more than the automatic mode.
