View Full Version : Russia and their olympics that might not be a dismal failure

Oh Putin... All the shirtless photos of you wrestling a fighter jet into submission won't make up for the yellow water coming out of your hotel plumbing systems.

I tried to flip on the shower. It wouldn't work. The toilets wouldn't flush either.

I called down to the front desk.

"It will be fixed in 40 minutes," the sympathetic man at the reception desk told me. "But when it comes back on, please do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous."

Yay for international sports!

At least the communal toilets were designed with the Olympic spirit in mind, don't you think?

It's not that Olympic events are generally a dismal failure (most go off without much of a hitch), it's that they'e more of a magnet for bad press than many other high-profile events.

And you know what? I'm totally OK with that.

Bad press is an understatement. I have never yelled at the TV as much as I do during the Olympics from inept monkeys attempting to interview and describe what is going on. 2012 Swimming coverage in the US what nightmarish at best. Reporters were literally insulting the interviewees after a race and asking the most mundane and idiotic questions about the race.

Questions not to dissimilar to Kimi when he was asked a dumb question. Fast forward to 1:28 if you haven't seen this one.

They held a contest to see what the mascot would be for Sochi. They put a joke entry into the contest to draw attention to the contest. It won. They decided not to use it anyway. How lame. I want this to be the Sochi mascot.

Only got to watch a clipped version of the downhill skiing highlights, but phwoooooar....that course. Wow. I have such a better appreciation for the ski racing now (since I've conquered the mighty beast that is an intermediate-level ski run) and it's pretty spectacular to watch, especially now in HD.

They said Mancuso hadn't done a slalom in competition in almost a year. Only three top 10's over all of her races this season and her best was 7th. Then she goes and wins the downhill portion of the combined by a nice margin and it's enough to get her bronze after the time she lost on the slalom. At least we aren't getting shut out in alpine racing and there's still a decent chance at one or two more.

since when is Austra abbreviated as AUT?

also it looked like they light up the outside of the dome over the hockey rink with the flags of the teams competing which is kinda cool.

Since like forever, not to confuse it with AUStralia. Much like SWEden and Switzerland (CHE, from its name in abbreviated in Latin).

Apparently in 1956 AUT and AUS were switched.

Watching it now, it's basically Thunderdome. Ski cross owns, and apparently the snowboard cross was just as brutal -- two women got knocked cold by falls and one popped her ACL, apparently. Ouch.

G'day Mate
February 20th, 2014, 05:55 AM
Yeah, bordercross seemed to have a lot more tangles due to the big blind-spots snowboards have (caused by the nature of riding side-on) so it looked like a complete lottery. The skiing seemed more competitive, but perhaps as a skier myself I am biased?
