There's a record that I really wanted, only 100 copies were made. One came up for sale for $25, but it took me four hours to see the email notifying me it was for sale, so I lose. :(

On the upside, they repressed the Black Keys' first album in a really cool looking color, and I managed to snag one of those at face value. Don't have it yet, but it's in the mail.

I should learn better to avoid randomly wondering "Hey, I wonder if ____ album from ten years ago was ever pressed onto LP."

Odds are it was. But since the 2000s seem to represent a low spot in the prevalence of vinyl editions of albums, buying a copy of ____ album will probably be extremely expensive.

I have such a soft spot for Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. That album fueled so many reckless drives through the mountains of rural Pennsylvania. Sadly an LP copy runs about $100 these days.

But can the Sad Little Archive of Good Music™ truly be complete without it?

This Contraption Cuts Vinyl Records From Digital Audio In Real Time (http://gizmodo.com/this-contraption-cuts-vinyl-records-from-digital-audio-1542000039)

I think they're doing it wrong...

Yeah, that does defeat the purpose in a way. I mean, just having something on vinyl is cool to me, regardless of the source. But, an added benefit is having the (arguably) better quality that a truly analog source provides.

Anyway... KillerB to the white courtesy phone...

I had to... There aren't a lot of albums I liked ten years ago that I still actually like. I had sort of forgotten about this one, but it really is excellent. I was a little leery about buying a picture disc since they have a stigma of sounding like crap, but I think newer ones (this one included) sound on par with any record.

Well, this is something that's been quietly brewing for a year or two now, but I finally did it. Just went ahead and ordered all five Pixies albums. Problem is, they are limited editions and I just know this online store is not going to be able to come through with them. They supposedly ship in 4-6 weeks. ie never.

But, I will hunt them down and purchase them.

Heh, I just discovered Wal-Mart actually seems to have a good selection of records available online with free shipping to a store.

I love screwing around with the gears of e-commerce. Who thinks I could actually get this shipped to a local Wal-Mart for in-store pickup? And if so, what condition would it arrive in?

http://www.walmart.com/ip/34434619

Edit: Wow, Wal-Mart's site seems to promise the moon on some stuff. They claim to have the pressing of Doolittle that I want. If this other place doesn't come through, I'm tempted to just try it, if for no other reason than to have an excuse to make a scene in Wal-Mart because they lost my vinyl record order. :random:

Just picked up the box set of LCD soundsystem's final concert at Madison Square Garden. It's incredible in its enormity. It was a nearly four hour long show. Seriously, the records go to side J... What kind of album has a side J?

It's cool if it's in good condition and you don't mind opening an original rarity and playing it. I haven't had my vinyl collection out in some time - mostly because I just don't have alot of time for that these days and never set up a good space for it in my current house. But for awhile I was collecting rare disco 12 inches and unusual disco LPs, mostly because you can source long unbroken instrumental sections from them and also because that's the kind of music I like - Dance music, R&B, early break-beat stuff.

But alot of rare things aren't so cheap and are not necessarily in great shape if they've been played again and again and again, and certainly not if people have been scratching with them. Also, if something's still sealed in the original packaging, you have to decide whether it's worth keeping that or whether you want to really play it. If it's really old, that's a hard decision. Many years ago I opened up a sealed original pressing of a rare disco record, and even though it still sounds great, I kind of regret that.

Anyway... KillerB to the white courtesy phone...

Oh boy, that brings back some memories. I knew Karen O and Brian Chase in college. We were never close - I doubt she'd remember me at all although he might - but had (and still have) many mutual friends. Karen and another mutual friend transferred to NYU, her after freshman year and him after sophomore year. I don't really want to talk too much about "him" except to say that he was a very attractive, if rather quiet, guy and was also a gifted musician and in a variety of punk bands at Oberlin when Karen was there - he died in 2001, which is a topic best left alone. When they got big, it was suddenly very odd to see people you had known casually on magazine covers.

70s and 80s picture discs, particularly low-volume punk discs pressed quickly, sound like turds. But you don't buy them for the playing anyway.

That said, I don't always buy picture discs, but when I do, they have a giant face on them.

(Seriously the two in this thread are the only two I own. They tend to sound pretty poor, but that's the only way these two albums were pressed onto LP.)

Using a highly scientific procedure, I've calculated that, after 11 years, it's finally ok to listen to this song again. In celebration, I've purchased the 12" UK single...

(Don't act like it wasn't a great song. Hell, it nearly defined a generation.)

I recently got a turntable. I'd wanted one for a while. I still buy CD's because I like to have a physical copy of all my music, call me weird. But records just have something neat about them, I've always liked. Perhaps, I'll switch to records for my physical copies of new stuff from here on out. Most new ones come with MP3 downloads anyway. My collection is small, and my stereo isn't great, but I'll be improving over time. It's not something I'm going to invest a lot in, I'm no audiophile. But it is something I enjoy.

(btw, I got an Audio Technica LP120-USB. Seems to be a common, solid choice for someone who wants something that is quality, but not expensive hi-fi stuff.)

Well, I built myself a subwoofer since the tower speakers just weren't doing it for me on the lower end. It's quite a beast. It's about 3ft tall and around 14" wide. It's made of mostly 3/4" MDF. I'd estimate that it weighs 80lbs or so.

I've been messing around with the placement and the volume settings for the subwoofer. Recently I decided it sounded better turned up significantly. I've been happily listening to music almost all day, but I just noticed something when I looked at the subwoofer... After spending a lot of time carefully placing it to get the best possible sound, it seems to have moved itself. That's right, the sheer amount of vibration it creates was enough for it to vibrate all 80lbs of itself across my carpeted basement floor.

I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to keep the damn thing in place. :o

Guess how much I just spent on a replacement (upgrade) turntable needle? (Not the whole cartridge, just a needle.)

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Ordered right from the label, at about 1/5 the cost the RSD flipper scumbags were trying to get.

If you've still got the Shure, I'm betting you bought a JICO SAS? Good choice. I had one on an M91ED for a while. Was weird spending that much on a stylus when I'd gotten the cart for free, but the results were undeniable. Ended up selling the works and sticking to a DL-110 on my 1200 though.

It's actually not new, it's just a single from their last album in 2011.

And yes, I did buy the JICO SAS for my Shure. It really is amazing. I would definitely say worth the $160 or so.

I let my old landlord listen to my stereo a few days ago. He's probably in his 50s. He said it was the best stereo he has ever heard in his life, and compared listening to it to being high. He also said he was probably not going to listen to any other stereos for several days afterwards because there just really wasn't a point to it, and it would be like eating crappy food after having an amazing meal.
