View Full Version : How's the weather?

Sorry, I never was really good with making small talk. I'll be making a cross-country road trip this weekend from Pennsylvania to California. Knowing how geographically dispersed our group is, I really want to know how the weather is where you are and if this road trip will be a good idea or not. I've wanted to make this drive for years and now that I am relocating to the left coast, this is my best opportunity... if it weren't for the wicked snow storms this winter has brought upon us.

Currently, the route goes:

Philadelphia, PA
Reston, VA
????? (you fill in the blanks here!)
Las Vegas, NV
San Jose, CA

I am required to travel a minimum of 400 miles a day for reimbursement purposes (the first leg is short because I'm visiting a friend). I will be driving my Honda Fit that groans at high speed interstates and I would prefer secondary roads but I do understand that accumulated snow and ice may make the highways a safer routing.

So, what do you think?

Kansas City, Missouri

Weather is great right now and around the 50's. Should be like that on sat/sun also.

I recommend using roadtrippers.com if you want to find cool things along your route of choice.

Rockies/Southwest National Parks/Northern California parks are all  to me.

Buy used 86, drive it to Cali, then sell it at a ??? profit???

Driving from the East Coast to the West Coast and only using secondary roads sounds like lunacy. Especially this time of year.

How about US50 coast to coast? Only sticky spots will be the Rockies and Sierras, probably, unless the longterm forecast says blizzard in the plains states.

Tons of snow in Chicago. But, it should be cleared up by the weekend. It'll be in the upper 30s for the rest of this week and into early next week.

Plus we have hot dudes with guns that can do the splits while slamming a beer. You almost have to stop here.

I will be out of town on Saturday, but if you pass through Ohio any other day, I suggest a detour to Cincinnati for the laughs and such.

You know damn well what the weather is like in Philly.

Denver is delightful this week and most of the snow has melted. Roads are clear.

That isn't necessarily the case up in the high Rockies on I-70 but you probably have a clear shot to Denver from the east.

The Rocky Mountains aren't anything to fool around with in February, though - conditions can change very quickly - and it's about four hours by car to cross them.

I love roadtrippers. If they'd recognize us Android users though, I'll love them even more. :(

Side note: my friend and I were at the auto show and he asked me what new car I would buy today. I couldn't think of anything else but the 86. YW has infected me with the boxer sickness. :hard:

I am really digging that US 50 idea, :random:. Will be investigating further.

Also, looks like one of the first stops will be in a Cincy Hooters. Keith, it'll probably be Sunday night instead but I'll keep you updated. I may be decent at math but I'm terrible with days.

Hmm. Seems Google Maps no longer allows unlimited waypoints. Lame. Here's what I'd do:

Philadelphia to Malibu CA - via Reston VA, Huntington WV (to do the New River Gorge), Albuquerque NM, Las Vegas NV, and then starting in Dana Point CA at the bottom of CA-1 (Pacific Coast Highway) up to Malibu (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Philadelphia,+PA/Reston,+VA/Huntington,+WV/Albuquerque,+NM/Las+Vegas,+NV/Dana+Point,+CA/Laguna+Beach,+CA/Huntington+Beach,+CA/Rancho+Palos+Verdes,+CA/Malibu,+CA/@34.0573938,-118.2056053,9z/data=!4m61!4m60!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c6b7d8d4b54beb:0x89f 514d88c3e58c1!2m2!1d-75.163789!2d39.952335!1m5!1m1!1s0x89b64047261665e5 :0x63dfafe8a871ae9f!2m2!1d-77.3570028!2d38.9586307!1m5!1m1!1s0x8845e3aa792430 b5:0xd3713568ed4051d4!2m2!1d-82.445154!2d38.4192496!1m5!1m1!1s0x87220addd309837 b:0xc0d3f8ceb8d9f6fd!2m2!1d-106.609991!2d35.110703!1m5!1m1!1s0x80beb782a4f57dd 1:0x3accd5e6d5b379a3!2m2!1d-115.172816!2d36.114646!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dcf08fba64fd8 9:0xe42eb4bc7001fa15!2m2!1d-117.6981075!2d33.4669721!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dce0c88f5b2 4c1:0xde7b435a879daf6!2m2!1d-117.7831104!2d33.5422475!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dd2422f9c82 ab5:0x45ed85c9a4663b01!2m2!1d-117.9992265!2d33.660297!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dd4bda70548d 9f:0xc1447f5b6e9694b4!2m2!1d-118.3870173!2d33.7444613!1m5!1m1!1s0x80e81da9f908d 63f:0x93b72d71b2ea8c5a!2m2!1d-118.7797571!2d34.0259216)

Honestly, this time of year I would spend most of your time in California.
Starting in Malibu, you take CA-1 up to Heart Castle in San Simeon, then the Rocky Point Restaurant to eat dinner with a view of Palo Colorado and the Bixby Creek Bridge, then up to Santa Cruz, and finally over CA-17 to San Jose (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Philadelphia,+PA/Reston,+VA/Huntington,+WV/Albuquerque,+NM/Las+Vegas,+NV/Dana+Point,+CA/Laguna+Beach,+CA/Huntington+Beach,+CA/Rancho+Palos+Verdes,+CA/Malibu,+CA/@34.0573938,-118.2056053,9z/data=!4m61!4m60!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c6b7d8d4b54beb:0x89f 514d88c3e58c1!2m2!1d-75.163789!2d39.952335!1m5!1m1!1s0x89b64047261665e5 :0x63dfafe8a871ae9f!2m2!1d-77.3570028!2d38.9586307!1m5!1m1!1s0x8845e3aa792430 b5:0xd3713568ed4051d4!2m2!1d-82.445154!2d38.4192496!1m5!1m1!1s0x87220addd309837 b:0xc0d3f8ceb8d9f6fd!2m2!1d-106.609991!2d35.110703!1m5!1m1!1s0x80beb782a4f57dd 1:0x3accd5e6d5b379a3!2m2!1d-115.172816!2d36.114646!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dcf08fba64fd8 9:0xe42eb4bc7001fa15!2m2!1d-117.6981075!2d33.4669721!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dce0c88f5b2 4c1:0xde7b435a879daf6!2m2!1d-117.7831104!2d33.5422475!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dd2422f9c82 ab5:0x45ed85c9a4663b01!2m2!1d-117.9992265!2d33.660297!1m5!1m1!1s0x80dd4bda70548d 9f:0xc1447f5b6e9694b4!2m2!1d-118.3870173!2d33.7444613!1m5!1m1!1s0x80e81da9f908d 63f:0x93b72d71b2ea8c5a!2m2!1d-118.7797571!2d34.0259216)

My route from Dana Point to San Jose will take you over 500 miles, mostly on CA-1, which will be the best scenery you've ever seen. The stretches on I-40 in New Mexico and Arizona will also be gorgeous, and if you want off the beaten path, you can take the old US-66 where it's still extant.

There's a great 86 group in Philly, good guys, 75% of their cars are BRZs.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

(but if you ever want to be cured, just drive an auto 86 on a highway for 3 hours and lie to yourself by telling yourself that that's as good as the car will ever get - that should sort you out in a jiffy)

Man, US50 through Nevada is AWFUL, though. I'd do anything to avoid that stretch of road. Twice on cross country trips I've thought the road couldn't be as bad as I remember it, and twice I've been wrong. So very, very wrong.

wang

Is it the desolation that makes it awful? Apparently it's the loneliest road in America... :(

thesameguy
February 21st, 2014, 09:13 AM
I don't think it's the destination - it's just a poorly maintained road in the middle of the desert. Either side is really ok (as far as cross-country highways go), it's just the Nevada part that sucks. Both times I've ended up on it I've wanted to take 50 from Tahoe into Sacramento - that's a great drive! But the section through Nevada is just horrible. 80 or 70 are better choices, overall.

I drove PCH from north to south last year but the first half was in heavy fog and at night. The fog was bad enough that I was anxious to look for the bixby canyon bridge and I had already crossed it without realizing it. Now that I'll be living in CA, I will make it a point to do the drive again.

YW - what am I doing it in? As in what car? The Fit. Didn't your secretary read my original post to you in its entirety?
