Nissan took a massive dick to the face when they called their Pulsar replacement the Tiida.

All that hard work in brand recognition gone with the oddly-spelt stroke of a pen. It was fitting though, because the Pulsar name used to invoke dynamic excitement and exciting dynamism, and the Tiida is neither of these things.

As a motorsport person, in my humble opinion the Pulsar GtiR (the original one that they used in rally events 1990 onwards) is an unfortunate vehicle.

They don't handle at all, without considerable modification (understeer and more understeer). You need to spend $25k on a gearbox to get one that will hold together for any hard use, pretty much every one you see for sale here has either a newly rebuilt gearbox, or a broken gearbox ... that should tell you a lot.

I wouldn't own one, and bear in mind, I could buy a tidy(ish) roadgoing version for NZ$5k. So about what I'd pay for a 15 year old boring appliance car.

That was pretty much the opinion 20 years ago too. Same deal with the Renault 5 GT Turbo. Yet when the likes of Evo drive something like that now, it gets 5 stars due to nostalgia.

I like the look of it.

I wonder though - the Evo is dead and the Impreza isn't exactly thriving. Do Nissan *really* think they be successful with another 4wd turbo hatch? If so, I'm happy, but it seems like swimming upstream as a market proposition.

I know the bonnet vent is a nod to the original GTi-R, but really intercoolers belong in front of the engine, any other location is just a waste of time.

A waste of time, but excellent for assembly! The more engine stuff attached to the engine the quicker assembly can be. I'm sure there is also some benefit in dynamics engine... a shorter intake path never hurts responsiveness. I'm sure they analyzed all of this. And, really, with modern engine technology compromised component positioning really isn't hurting anyone. A run of the mill two liter direct injected turbo has no problem reaching 300+hp, well beyond the goals for this class of car.

I hate the styling. Looks like a not-very downsized Rogue/Quashquai, plus the color or the light makes the paint creamy-white. Matte white or bust.

The Xzibit themed scoop deserves its own study.

Did anyone else just assume this was a concept car not meant for production?

The Xzibit themed scoop deserves its own study.

It's a deliberate revival of the original car's signature styling feature:

Yeah but the recipe sounds great (small, turbo, AWD) and it looks cool for a hot hatch.

Here's hoping the concept can out-MS3 the MS3.

That actually looks pretty cool, and hopefully makes it into production.

Now someone just needs to go have a word to Honda and tell them to get their head out of the sand.

Sounds like it's an old concept by a 3rd party design house. (http://nzhondas.com/pub/128388-little-things-make-you-happy-210.html#post1973253)

This one's an in-house concept. Keith-approved. Now take the engine (250 hp turbocharged 1.6 liter 4) and put it in an IDx.
