We're ok, thanks for asking.

It was a long one. Not particularly violent but it could have been bad had it been a little stronger or longer.

It didn't feel that bad. I don't know if I can explain myself but it didn't have the violence of the combined motions. It was just a groovy sort of back and forth movements. It felt like the energy took a lot more time be released.

I'm in the city of Oaxaca (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Oaxaca/@17.1949053,-96.7531958,10z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x85c72249df26d9b1:0xac88a77657dff c3b), normally earthquakes originate underneath the Ometepec mountains (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Oaxaca/@16.5869979,-98.4394256,10z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x85c72249df26d9b1:0xac88a77657dff c3b), on the border of the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, some 30 miles away from the coast. I guess I'm roughly some 200 miles from the epicenter.

Glad you're ok, buddy! We don't get many earthquakes around here...when we do get one it's usually a 4-pointer or less. Feels like a cute little tremor. It's always something special because it's so infrequent.

We are getting 3.0-4.0 earthquakes around here (Oklahoma) every few months. There are a lot of people saying its from the fracking going on in the oil fields. First one we felt, thought someone hit the house. The quakes come as a jolt and not the usual rolling style. Looked at the hanging lamps and they didn't even move. Not like the ones when I was in Ca where anything that hangs sways like a pendulum in a gale wind.

I've never lived in Mexico City. I'm Oaxacan, born and raised. I moved to Villahermosa (http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4095/4790505329_41a1d8e8c6_z.jpg)at the beginning of the year, and there's no quakes here. And no prevention culture, either. Where I come from (and when I lived in Encinitas, notably) people would be really aware of their surroundings in the first seconds of a quake (or before, if there's an alarm system) and act accordingly. Once the OMG IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!! initial panic goes by and everyone pretends they weren't the least bit scared, they start doing the things they've drilled for.

Out here, it's pretty scary, people are not prepared to deal with the psychology of a quake. They panic. We had* a 5.5 in the early morning today, and people are all freaked out at work. I don't know what they're gonna do in a couple of years when they start feeling the consequences of the fracking they've recently greenlighted.

Fracking causes tiny earthquakes, if any at all. Certainly less impact than the mine subsidence people dealt with in PA before fracking.

Fracking doesn't trigger earthquakes on active faults.

Everything has unintended consequences. We should be studying it, but if we wait for an energy source with zero drawbacks, we're all going to be sitting in the dark.

Luckily for Americans, most of the oil and gas reserves are in states with very little active seismicity - North Dakota and Pennsylvania, respectively. But any statements made about fracking increasing the chances of large earthquakes along active fault lines are pure speculation at this point. I just get very irritated when people spout off about fracking causing this and that when, at this point, there is zero science to back it up.

Honestly, I find it amusing that people are surprised that there might be small earthquakes in areas where fracking is occurring - I guess most of these people aren't used to living in areas where resource extraction is taking place. Small tremors were expected in the anthracite region where I grew up, and subsidence was really common. I guess I never really thought of them as "earthquakes"; they were just thought of as the effects of underground rockfalls.

FaultyMario

I never said they would cause any major earthquakes. But from my experience here, the complete disregard for preparedness will cause some social unrest if they start getting continuous seismic activity, even if it lingers around 2.5 degrees.

You know there's major mass denial when people live in the deltas of the two biggest rivers in Mexico and they build within a hundred yards of them. And then complain about their losing their property to floods.

jimeez
May 23rd, 2014, 04:53 AM
People have been building in questionable places for a long time. The side of a cliff, middle of a forest, on the beaches and then moan and groan when some a natural disaster comes along and destroys that house.

There are some around here that truly believe that the fracking is causing these quakes around here. Along with the quakes there are questions about fracking contaminating ground water. EPA is doing a study that may come out this year.

Didn't feel a thing here but I don't know if that's normal or just because I was asleep. I know on the east coast that a 6.0, even 500 miles away, would wake the dead.

California's geology is different. Earthquakes don't transmit energy as far as they do on the east coast. This is largely due to the fact that we have earthquakes with some regularity. The earth's crust is less rigid here than the east. There's no way we're feeling a 6.0 from the bay area in SoCal. Maybe an 8 or so could go that far.

7.5 (ish, depending on source) in NZ overnight, a couple hundred km north of Christchurch on the South Island. Leon and Hannah (scoop) have both checked in on FB. Based on reddit posts, folks in Dunedin like SkylineObsession (and wifey) didn't feel it all that strongly. Peril's in Oz, now, right?

Pretty deep quake (23km) and appears to have ruptured towards the north, sparing CHCH. Looks like some damage in Wellington. I'm sure Nelson and other smaller South Island communities got hit, but haven't seen pics.

MOFO that was an interesting night.

I am amazed that my house survived that apparently undamaged. Just after midnight got quite the wake up call. I was braced in a doorway, with the whole damn place moving under me. One cat was running around the bedroom doing panic meows, the other cat who is in another room at night went under the spare bed and took quite a while to come out.

Tsunami warning was issued in the middle of the night, I don't think a lot eventuated from that. I slept through those warnings, as I went back to sleep (yay pills), but I am miles from the coast.

The Wellington central business district is apparently "closed" this morning, meaning workers have been told to stay home. I work out in the burbs so I am probably not effected.

Crunching the numbers, we're enjoying currently an average of 17 quakes an hour, over the last 24 hours .... and the quakes only started 18 hours ago.

Made for an interesting day at work. Particularly during one of the really big ones, that arrived as I was having a pee.

Braced against the walls and carried on. Not a drop was spilled.

Yeah i was still up at midnight (playing FH3) and a while later before hitting the sack i noticed my compy was still on, so checked Facebook quickly and 'oh - there was an earthquake'?

Have relatives in Blenhiem, haven't heard from them but they may have changed cell numbers. And one of my uncles lives near Christchurch, but they are in Blenhiem at the mo - said "it hasn't stopped rocking all f...ing night". Obviously with the simply massive landslides along the coast, they'll have to take the long way home in a day or so.

The interesting thing about that car park building, is that after the earthquake a few years ago, that building was damaged and spent a year or so being strengthened before it re-opened.

Apparently helicopters work by being so evil, that the ground repels them.

They're tearing down a few downtown Wellington buildings after the quake.

Seems that the frequency of the shake was really hard on 5-8 story buildings, but not too bad on low buildings, or buildings tall enough that they didn't have time to get a good sway going. So there are buildings that have been damaged by smacking into the building next to them.

BTW, had to google up Gal... at first I was thinking Gallon! Just not very familiar with that unit and associating that with earthquakes. Not sure if it's a british unit thing? Anyway, 1G is 980 Gal... so I don't really have a good 'feel' for 150 Gal.

However, I do know 8.1 on the Richter scale is freaking scary! I don't even think LA can handle that kind of shaking very well for 3 minutes!

Predicted peak ground acceleration (pga) for most dam sites near the San Andreas fault is 1g or higher, FWIW. Minimum pga that most California dams are designed to is typically 0.15g.

The USGS, et al, will be all over the records from this Mexican quake--the engineering community desperately needs good records for large subduction zone quakes.

September 15th, 2017, 09:42 AM
Do we really need to worry about peak accel for dams? Kinda like race car driver could survive more than 100G's in a crash, but probably can't last too long under a sustained 10G...

I felt it a little. I was on a new building on the side of a mountain, nice view of the city and pretty solid foundations.
The sounds, though, they were bowel-emptying!

As for damage, as Swervo said, it was in central Mexico, and people in Mexico city were hit hardest. It's an odd quake, because it didn't originate at either the plate's rifts or the subduction zone, so its violence was unexpected.

In a few minutes, more than three thousand kilometers from the epicenter of the emergency in Mexico City, a minister and two foreign ministers agreed that 122 specialists, including rescuers and engineers, would travel to Mexican territory. What seemed like sending international aid to the disaster, in fact hid an urgent mission: rescue two targets listed as top priority.

They came quietly. No one prevented them from crossing the security lines in the direction of the remains of the collapsed building. Marinos, federal and Mexico City police officers opened the way to the mission led by Colonel Dudi Mizrahi, a civilian communications expert recruited by the IDF specifically to command it.

As the data were confirmed against the architectural memory of the building, Kabitke transmitted the information to the members of the Israeli team that would execute the rescue of the target by which they had arrived at Mexico. US rescuers supported them so that it was the Israeli team that coordinated the rescue operations, thereby displacing Mexicans, Spaniards, Colombians and Koreans, who were ordered to carry rubble.

The Israel team never said that they were looking for a specific person, simply that they were helping in the rescue tasks, but in reality they were only interested in one person, and it was a woman who was on the 2nd floor, in the offices of Valora Consultores , in one of the points of greater complexity, because it remained trapped under a concrete block. Neither the shabbath , the Jewish holy day nor the celebration of the Rosh Hashanah , the Jewish New Year, which coincided with this date, stopped the work.

The protocol launched 36 hours earlier already had the first 17 elements of the Emergency Military Unit (UME) on Mexican soil as advanced to recognize the terrain of the tragedy and plan the rescues. On 22 September, on board an Airbus of the Spanish Army would arrive at the capital of the country another 37 staff.

"The first impression was that maybe the Attorney General came to do the survey, the photographs, but no. Everything was done by agreement with the Spaniards, because they wanted to remove all the bodies, because apparently they were not only looking for this body (Gómez Varo's), but strange documentation that he had with him", said Jorge Enrique Gómez Zamarripa, ex-husband of one of the victims of the second floor.

In the days after the quake, I heard an interview with a widower was on the news complaining about the lack of information and transparency surrounding the rescue work at Obregon 286, his wife was working for a PPG subsidiary and had been called to a meeting at Valora's offices where she died when it collapsed. His opinion was that it was all too shady.

Yeah, after shocks of smaller magnitudes are quite common.

We’ve been anticipating a BIG one for quite sometime... or geologists believe we’ve been overdue for a BIG one based on historical data...

I suppose it’s better to have more of these 6 pointers to relief the stress build up rather than to have one big 8 pointer that end up destroying nearly everything...

Edit: 7.1 aftershock, so stronger than the first quake. Not common, but not unheard of.

Edit 2: Downgraded to 6.9.

Edit 3: USGS saying depth was 0.9km. They're usually more like 8-12km. That's crazy shallow.

Oh yeah, I should be a good person and provide an update. Forgetful me. Anyway things are well for the most part. Someone shut off the water to her house and her cat ended up pretty hot since she uses a swamp cooler instead of AC. But the cat recovered quickly. The Miata seems to have also escaped its fall from on high (it was on stands high enough to remove the transmission on a tranny jack out from underneath) with little damage. Just the front bumper cover, a headlight cover where the prop rod detached from the hood and the hood came down, and the brake dust shields. Kind of amazing really. The house is otherwise okay, some things fell from shelves and broke on the floor but not as much as feared. The fridge moved a couple feet out from the wall but stayed upright. We think she got off easy considering the magnitude of the quakes.

Reports have been that these have been 'rolling' quakes, so I can see the damage being less severe than a quake that shakes more violently. IIRC my sister's neighborhood was built in the 80s.

Tom Servo

Ok so we just had an earthquake.
It was a feeble 3.2, but... it was less than 5km from here.
I heard a rumble, then a loud bang, then it shook for a couple of seconds then another bang.
Seriously thought it was an explosion, not an earthquake as it seemed louder than shakier.

I looked out the window for our gas tank, then ran around outside to see if there was a fireball. Thought it might have been a meteor strike. Weather is bad, cant see more than 100m due to mist, but looked hard to see if there was a glow anywhere!

Then checked a local facebook group and it was felt and heard all over the area.
Oh - just now as Im typing, its been recentred even closer to us. And moved it from 10km deep to 5km deep.

Woah! Genaro García Luna, the equivalent of the Secretary of Homeland Security for Mexico in the period 2006-2012, is currently being judged in the EDNY under accusations of working for the Sinaloa Cartel. Up this point, the story is that of a corrupt idiot who knew how to climb the government ladder.

Problem is, that one of the witnesses on day four of the trial mentioned that Garcia Luna in his role as a broker for the Mafia, was involved in "intelligence and armament dealings" with a prominent member of the Mexican Jewish community. Thru other highly scrutinized cases involving García Luna (https://spikytv.com/a-kidnapping-scandal-where-is-businessman-eduardo-margolis-now/), that man can be no other than Eduardo Margolis Sobol, AKA The Golem, reportedly the son of one of the founders of Mossad and himself an ex-Mossad agent.

That means that the Israeli foreign intelligence services could be dragged thru the cesspool that is the Mexican-American drug trade, as they could have "inadvertently" been supplying the Sinaloa cartel with communications and defense equipment. How does that fit in with the shitshow that was the rescue operation of Obregon 286? Who the fuck knows.

I do not know about mermaids.

But if you're interested on my messy gossipy thing, well...

Part 1: Some time, during the first days of the 2017 earthquake I heard a story on the radio. It went something like this: Some chemist/engineer type guy was desperately looking for his wife whom he feared had been called to a meeting to the Roma Norte neighborhood that had suffered a lot of building collapses. His rationale was that he had met his wife there, working for a company that used to be a tenant of the 286 building. According to him, the company that they worked for was acquired by a larger one and he went to work elsewhere, but his wife went to work for a company that had some type of relationship with their old employer, they were either suppliers or buyers, I don't remember which.

According to the guy, business was doing well, and his wife had been hired because she had knowledge of and relations with the old company, but she had been moved from production to corporate (sales/purchases). Her new job, IIRC, was with a specialized division of the Mexican branch of PPG.

At the time of the radio interviews, the guy was in a state of worry because he had knowledge that when their old company merged, the owners vacated the premises and renovated the building in order to turn a cubicle farm into swanky conference rooms to deal with the more business they were having, but he worried that renovations weren't done correctly because he had worked in the place and he didn't think the building could do away with the structural elements that are present in cubicle land but not in swanky conference rooms.

It turned out his fears were correct, his wife had been sent by her employer to conduct business dealings there and that the building's structure had been weakened by improperly made renovations. The wife and a few other people were crushed to death there.

Part 2: The story that the news link above narrates is one of international espionage. In the early hours of the earthquake aid operative, the Spanish foreign service and the Israeli Defense Forces were granted command by the Mexican army of the rescue operation at Obregon 286. Apparently, a front company for the Israeli foreign intelligence service was a tenant in the building and the collapse had killed a Spanish woman who was at the moment of the quake conducting businesses there. Because of all the rumors that were picked up by the press (supposedly the woman had a briefcase chained to her arm), it was implied that she might have been a spy for the Spanish government. It also turned out most companies renting space in the aforementioned building were either defense contractors or owned by Israelis or by Mexican Jews. What was the dead wife dealing in? Special coatings. Why was the desperate husband kept in the dark about her whereabouts for more than a day so that he had to go to the media for information? because of sensitive matters of national interest between Mexico, Spain and Israel.

Part 3? That's just my musings, but if you want to read them, just hit the subscribe button and ring the bell. And don't forget to comment!

I hope everyone in California is ok. Big storm, now an earthquake, at least a 5.1 from what I’ve seen.

Always gotta do things bigger in the USA don’t you?

Tsunami next? No wildfire though, that’s scheduled for next week.

Lol, well, we were stupid and decided we'd try to stick to our plan to go to Palm Springs for the weekend, as the hurricane wasn't even supposed to reach San Diego until midnight tonight. It actually did work out, it was barely sprinkling when we left Palm Springs this morning and hit a few rounds of heavy rain on the way home but it wasn't anything that we didn't see this winter. The only real difference has been that it's also warm. Gotta say, the new car handled the bad weather like a champ. Having the backup of the car's radar to look out for idiots without their lights on and it definitely being able to find lane lines even when they were really tough to see was pretty reassuring, but it never put a wheel wrong. Just put on the adaptive cruise and..well...cruised home. Got 31mpg to boot, not bad for a massive SUV.

I've been getting alerts on my phone all day long with notifications about the storm, including an emergency alert that we're under a flash flood watch until 19:45. So another alert pops up and at this point they're getting annoying. I glance over and see "earthquake detected" on my phone's screen. Take a couple of seconds, then realize "oh shit, is this that early earthquake warning system?" and then the ground started shaking a few seconds later.

5.1 is the threshold where the earthquake will be a major topic of discussion and the news will go searching for damage/stories, but all they've found so far is some toppled wine bottles at a shop. Given the building codes we have, you've really got to get into the 6s before any real damage happens, so this earthquake was more just a "woo, now we get to talk about that too!"

So far the rain's been spotty, sometimes heavy, but nothing we didn't see this winter. The wind has been almost non-existent. They're going ahead with the NFL game down the road at SoFi stadium. Depends on who you talk to whether we still haven't seen the worst of it or if we're currently in the worst of it.

It's a big deal out in the deserts and the mountains, especially places with fresh burn scars, but overall this seems about the same as the more intense ones we had this winter. We still have power, internet's workin' great, and we're all curled up in the living room watching football.

Good for the urban folk then I guess.

Still, with warnings going off all the time it seems pretty silly to still allow the NFL game to proceed and potentially bring people out into danger and/or take up first responder resources.

But hey, NFL owns Sundays and advertising needs to be sold.

I guess I should make clear that unless something changes drastically, this isn't even the worst storm we've received this year.

Good for the urban folk then I guess.

SoCal has very few rural dwellers and they're mostly in the desert areas, which are already under risk of flash floods.

Speaking of mermaids, I was sent a meme featuring Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Halle Bailey as Ariel.

Strange times. I was away at Road America on Saturday when apparently a brief but very windy storm passed through at home - a full day in advance of the tropical storm that would be passing by to the east. I came home Sunday midday to small branches and debris everywhere, fortunately no real damage to any of my property. I was tired and napping at some point in the late afternoon when I woke up to what I thought was a mild earthquake. Being half asleep, I wasn't sure, but I could have sworn some gentle rocking woke me up (funny enough in my dream I was sleeping in some cabin - quite disorienting when I did wake up ). I'm probably 150+ miles from the epicenter.

Hilary went well east of me last night, I was actually enjoying the gentle rain with low winds, I had the windows open to cool the house. Which never happens in August. But then we never get tropical storms in CA either.

Turns out what broke all those branches in my neighborhood on Saturday was a small tornado. In CA!?

So tropical storm, earthquake, and tornado in one weekend. What other state can score such a trifecta? :D

Fortunately they were relatively small... still did quite a bit of damage in some areas though. Glad most people I know are okay!
