Finally back to working on this, hopefully I will have it running in the next few months. Little snug but it fits, I need to pull the engine back out to get the headers on and replace the brake booster with a smaller sentra one, had to get it in to tow the car home to my new garage. All I need now is a ECU and harness, radiator, heater hoses and make an exhaust and fix some odds and ends. Here how she sits now. Really would love to throw one in the X after this one is done.

Wow, looks great in there. Any idea on weight difference?

Bet it'll drive really nicely with all that instant linear oomph. Good luck with the rest of the work and let us know how it drives on the limit once it's done!

If I remember right, its about 150 lbs more than a dressed SR20 (with the turbo and cast iron manifold) I'll have to go back and find the actual weights someone did on V8 Nissans. I'll be down about 45 whp from the sr when I pulled it, but up about 35 ft/lbs of torque with an even wider torque curve. I can't wait to rip through the mountains in it, something i've missed a bunch.

That is looking amazing. I am really jealous! That is going to be a great setup I think - I'm still stunned at how well it fits!

Why is that motor designed so that the intake plenum sits perpendicular to the cylinder banks rather than parallel?

Good on ya... looks like a hell of a lot of work, but that ride will be uniquely YOURS.

thesameguy

Probably so it could fit under hoods with a low hoodline, like the SC400, without compromising the plenum volume. It is not the motor's most attractive feature.

Pretty sure the SC400 didn't use a Nissan motor. :p

Of course, I was just using it as an example, since I don't think the VH ever made it into any sports cars... I think it was only in the Q and trucks, yeah? I was just suggesting it was engineered to go into such spaces in the event Nissan decided to field such a car. Or, maybe the Q had a low hoodline, but I don't have any specific recollection that it did.

They wanted equal length long runners and the big plenum, the middle 4 runners while shorter on the plenum are longer on the bottom and the 4 outside corner ones are shorter on the bottom while longer on the plenum. There are 8 individual runners that bolt to the head in the order you would expect them to be in and then the plenum bolts on to those. It hasn't been too much more work than a normal engine swap, the swap kits and other people pioneered most of it, the only thing I figured out nobody else has was I could use the whole aftermarket SR20 pulley set (I needed a smaller ps pulley to clear the tension rod bracket)

Its definitely not for hood clearance, the coolant filller neck/dummy radiator cap kills anything they would have gained. The VH45 was only in the US 90-96 Q45, but stayed on in japan until '99/00 in the President, the later Q45's got VH41's that they changed/weakened a bunch of stuff on. The trucks got the VK56DE, another big DOHC V8 but the intake manifold looks more like an LS1 style. I'd love to get my hands on the short lived VK56VD out of '11-'13 M56 sport, VVEL and Direct injection, good for 420hp and 417ft/lbs. I've got the SAE white pages for the VH45DE, its really quite an amazing motor for its time, Nissan really should have stuffed it in a sports car of some sort back then.

I already have the naming taken care of as well :)

Was a fairly productive month, sentra booster helped make room to get everything in, its quite snug in places but its in and everything is bolted down and headers are on. Radiator has been ordered from Griffin, bolt in for S14 240sx with the rad hose positioning for the VH45 so I can use stock hoses. I need to relocate the PS reservoir, redo my PS lines, sort out the fuel lines and get a hold of an ECU and ECU harness (and work some magic on it), tidy up some other things in the engine bay and the big job make an x pipe and exhaust.

Picked up my radiator from Griffin friday and got it installed. Good quality all around and exactly what I wanted, complete drop in for S14 chassis (and thus able to use the S14 FAL Shroud/Fan kit I want) and able to use the stock VH45 rad hoses with just slight trimming.

Also picked up a Billion universal PS reservoir off ebay for cheap, its one of the few universals that are short, and its pretty similar to the stock one just easier to make a bracket to put it where I want it.

My experiences as well, and they were great to deal with and local to me, they emailed me the original blueprints, I drew what I wanted changed on them and 2 weeks later I got my radiator.

Yeah, I didn't either.

That is GOOD to hear.

Perhaps I'll do that on the Yukon to separate the trans cooler and the radiator.

Scored an S1 ECU and brand new uninstalled Nistune daughter board this week, picked up both for less than the cost of the nistune board from a retailer.

Little more progress. Autozone had the drop in S-chassis flex a lite fans the cheapest (even cheaper than summit) and when I go to order they have coupon code for 20% off, free shipping to home and a $10 gift card, talk about awesome timing. Got them installed as well as the Billion ps reservoir, took me quite a few times to make a bracket I was happy with, I was going too complex and finally the simple iteration won out. Hoping to get the PS lines and Fuel lines wrapped up soon.

wow its been that long, where did last year go. OK so this happened (ordering one tomorrow) http://www.wiringspecialties.com/240sx-s14-vh45de-wiring-harness/ . One of the reasons I haven't finished, I could do the wiring myself with the junkyard harness I have, but a brand new harness that connects like factory everywhere and made for the swap and chassis, well I will take that any day. They just came out with them last week. I can't believe last year went by that fast, I really need to get done with this thing, its like 95% there. I have most of the bits to finish the fuel and power steering lines, plus the wiring, that just leaves the exhaust. I really need to get cracking.

Crack away, 'cuz that thing is going to be awesome. :) We have a local S14 with a V8 in it (probably an LS) that comes out to autocross frequently. Seems like his clutch pack diff is wearing out now. [/besidethepoint]

Harness came in yesterday, looking forward to plugging in everything and not having to mess with the wiring. My purple billet fuelab filter came in last week as well, really need to get out in the garage and get some stuff done. I'll skip the boring wiring harness in a box picture, i'll post some when I get it installed in the engine bay. Also need to find someone to install my nistune board in the ecu, not sure I want to tackle soldering on a circuit board yet.

So i'm thinking about selling this, I kinda want a Focus RS. The lack of time and motivation has just really killed working on cars for me, my Xterra is deteriorating and this has been so close yet unfinished for so long, i'm just ready for something new...

To be honest, the focus RS will be a great car, but it lacks what so many other cars these days also lack. Soul.

240 is a great and small car that would be an absolute hoot with a v8.

Mirage
March 18th, 2016, 10:18 AM
Yea, I really want to see it through, i'm sure once its running i'll feel better about it. I've got a week off work in a few weeks with nothing planned for most of it, so I'm hoping to get a bunch of this small stuff knocked out on the 240. If nothing else a running project car will fetch me more money than a non-runner.

This.

And tackle one thing, just one thing, every day after work, so that when your week off work comes, you can get a lot more knocked out.
