I've had Black Gold for two years now and it has been a crazy blast. Never boring, ever. Purchased new from Team Triumph of Janesville, WI. Currently has over 14K miles on her.

It classifies as a bonafide Dream Vehicle from the Fantabulous List of Dreams for me, which includes things like a '71 Hemi 'Cuda, '14 Ferrari California and a '91 Linda Hamilton. Capable of 10-second quarter mile times at ~120+ MPH (when ridden by a small child), trust me when I say that she's got the goods. I might lust over literbikes and hyperbikes but that in no way means that I'm tired of the Daytona.


Exhibit 2. - 2008 Triumph Street Triple

This is my girl Becki's rowdy, snorty hooligan brother (sister?) of the Daytona. Full Arrows exhaust, Arrows tune, tail tidy w/. LED brakelight & turn signals, bar-end mirrors, tank pads and low miles -- has half the mileage of my bike even tho' it's three years older. Also in better shape overall (the P.O. was meticulous).

These motorcycles are toys in every sense of the word but they're not babied. They get ridden hard and put away wet, time after time, and have been very issue-free. While I talk about *adding* to our garage, I really do not want to sell these bikes, ever.

New Zero Gravity Double Bubble windscreen, removal of the rear passenger pegs and seat, adding the rear seat cowl, removal of the rear license plate/turn-signals "shovel", new undertail license braket and wiring up the new integrated turn-signals/brake light. :up: :up:

Unfortunately the quick connector that came with the tail light was wired *completely* wrong. Subsequently it took my buddy about three hours to test, troubleshoot, tear apart and re-solder the connections. It's on now however and it's working like a champ.

So that windscreen... yeah, I'm not sure I'm sold on it. *So* damn tall, I didn't realize that it wasn't a baloney-cut across the top. It does do a good job of managing the wind, I'll give it that -- I don't feel like I'm going to get peeled off the bike anymore at speed. But man, I find the height extremely disconcerting.

At least I don't notice the size/height of it while riding, just when looking at pics of it... #yeesh

The Slimey Crud Run was held this past weekend. Motorcyclists of all stripes, flavors, interests and orders come together to chat, grill out and brave the cold, dirty Wisconsin roads to get their ride on. The party starts in Pine Bluff, WI, early in the morning:

It was a bright but cold day. The roads were cleaner than usual, however -- which made things probably more spicy than they needed to be, honestly. :D That, combined with me running without plates, could have made for an expensive day... but it didn't and all's well that ends well. :up:

Leland, WI is a *tiny* one-road township... with two churches and three bars for the eight houses out there. No, I don't know why this was chosen as the site of the Run's end. It's pretty remote and surrounded by some gnarly, twisty roads, however... :twisted:

That old '97 Buell Cyclone hung with the group of sport- (and sportish-) bikes decently enough. He only got into one bad moment that I saw: stuck behind a tan appliance, he attempted an ill-conceived pass in the twisties. While the car didn't do anything to him, the amount of speed he needed to burst past it made him come into the next corner awful hot; the Cyclone's flimsy, tired forks did not like that and he fought the bronco trying to slow down/make the corner/stay out of the guardrail for more than a few yards.

(I prudently putt-putted behind the car until we were clear of the really tight stuff. There's always next time! *shrug*)

As we headed home in the afternoon, the pace picked up. The Cyclone and the BMW RS1100S were left behind as the Supersports jetted ahead through the countryside. A final fuel stop to regroup and then it was all over but the crying & shaking in the shower! :lol: :up:

One of the boys I rode to Arkansas with sold his Triumph Speed Triple and replaced it with a 2013 KTM RC8R. Bad-assed bike. :toast:

There was free BBQ, a bike dyno (no, I did not put my bone-stock 675 up there :finger: ), a live band kickin' out the jams and plenty of different dealer demo bikes to ride. We signed up to ride a 2014 Triumph Thunderbird (big middleweight cruiser) 2-up and I recommended going with the fully decked out garbagewagon with a passenger seat back. She balked and wanted to do the streamlined T-bird there, so we rode that instead. Well the pussy-pad on that bike was not only small, it was quite rounded and every time I rolled on the throttle, she'd scramble and pull at me hard to avoid falling off! :eek:

When the ride was over and we were back at the dealer's, she agreed that we should have taken the fully-loaded bike. :lol:

Yeah, it wasn't a bad time -- she also won 3 door prizes (a nice button-down Triumph shirt -- "Women's Medium", so that'll look good on our kid when they're 4 :p ), a Triumph wallet (woot!) and an iPhone 5 case.

I was talkin' shit and saying that if she won the iPhone case, I'd go buy an iPhone for it since my contract's up. D'oh! :lol:

EDIT: Also, you can't tell in that pic but I finally got my plate on my bike. Now I just need to put the current year sticker on it (sitting on the counter at home) and get an underseat LED light for it! :assclown:

Have you thought about just getting a double-DIN unit that has MirrorLink or some similar technology? There is the advantage of the external GPS antenna and no reliance on wireless data, but OTOH you pay a significant premium for maps that aren't ever going to be as good or current as Google Maps et al. A head unit that just displays your phone's maps is relatively cheap, and unless you expect to continuously find yourself with data coverage will probably work better, too. Even if you do expect to be without data coverage I think the smart money would be spent on cell phone+MirrorLink+TomTom app - because then your phone becomes a self-contained and portable GPS when you're out of the truck. If you're an iPhone user, Pioneer's AppRadio would be a no-brainer.

That doesn't really help anything. Apple fucked up the universe when they switched from the 20-pin connector (that had analog AV built in) to the Lightning connector (that is all digital). All sorts of things that worked with the first five generations of iPhones fundamentally won't work with the last two, or only work after buying multi-hundred dollar adapters. My friend has a first-gen AppRadio he bought with his iPhone 4S that is completely useless now that he has an iPhone 5. Given Apple's marriage to beating its customers about the face and neck with proprietary accessory purchases, I seriously doubt Lightning will be the last iDevice connector. I'd bet money in 3-4 years - maybe concurrent with USB4 - we'll get another new one. From a hardware perspective, you're probably better off with an Android since Android phones have been pretty consistent with micro USB, micro HDMI, and 1/8" headphone jacks. Unfortunately, terrible OS fragmentation has historically been its lot, but it seems that is mostly behind us now. At this point, it's at least no worse than iOS issues (which certainly wasn't true back in the 2.x days!).

I took the girl's '08 Triumph Street Triple out today (partially because her bike was blocking the Daytona, mostly because I wanted to :assclown: ).

As I'd mentioned before, her bike is snorty; what I mean by that is that it's got good torque off idle and grows to a solid midriff punch before redlining with not much more than just a whole lot of yelling.* The brake lever is significantly softer than the Daytona. Perhaps the brake fluid is low? Has air trapped in the lines? Quite possible that it's never been changed before. We're going to turn the bar down and reposition the grips, etc. at some point but it sure does ride comfy right now. :D Also, the Arrows exhaust sounds meaty and strong but quite muffled. I don't know if there are decibel-killing discs in there or what... but honestly it's plenty loud for most neighborhoods.

Swinging a leg back over the Daytona feels like I'm mounting a literbike now. :lol: The additional power of my 675 combined with the thicker head feel granted by the Hyperpro RSC steering damper just makes my supersport feel bigger, faster and stronger in all areas -- I should probably turn the Hyperpro down a few clicks!


*I'm speaking primarily to non-bike people here. RWA, DN, Nate and a few others would probably consider this amount of twist as "cute".

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, so if it hasn't been changed in the last several years it's probably contaminated with water, leading to that mushy feel. If air has gotten in the system, you have a much bigger problem.

Since 2010 I've been on more than a dozen of day-long sportbike country rides. 3 riders have gone down on rides that I've been on; these have ended up in dealing with local Police/Sheriffs & EMT's. Another 9 of the many "Fast Guys" I've ridden with/chased after have crashed on rides I was NOT on, totaling their bikes most of the time and requiring medical attention (and in at least one case, a helicopter ride). Causes boil down to not making a corner for various reasons (riding at/beyond the limit, road conditions, debris, misjudgment), highside/lowsides or hitting deer (both here in Wisconsin as well as down in Arkansas).

Full disclosure: I ride slow :D (comparatively speaking; aka well within my bikes' limits) and only up to my level of thrill. Keeps my bikes shiny and me out of the weeds. :toast:

The Daytona has had some minor clicking happening with the automatic cam chain tensioner this past January after her 12K service. Starting her up last weekend tho' she clicked for just a second or two before smoothing out. Must've been the cold fuckin' wit her.

My girl's Streety has a weak battery so in the interest of Science! I took it out to the first One-Wheel Wednesday of the year yesterday. Popped a surly wheelie on the way downtown, too. :hard:

A bit more than I wanted to spend but it passed every test I had -- everything works: A/C, cruise-control, tilt wheel, power driver's seat, wipers, heater, etc. Haven't found anything that doesn't work yet, actually. :up: The stereo is some cheapie Sony XPLOD unit (I'll get the serial number tomorrow) and the speakers are probably original "Mach 460" units and most of them are blown.

Spare tire & jack is in the trunk, the 5-speed tranny is new and still under warranty, new clutch and the 4.6L sounds healthy at idle. Amusingly enough, it doesn't have mufflers but instead just straight pipes all the way back. :rawk: Perhaps recklessly, I didn't bring anything like a diagnostic scan tool but it's not throwing any CELs. #knockonwood

That said... this is someone's project car. It's been torn down, bondo'd and repainted in someone's garage in a shade of yellow that's similar-to-but-not-exactly Ford Zinc Yellow and it shows in the door jambs, under the hood and around the trunk -- hence the name. :)

But don't expect me to tear this car apart. I just drove it 120 miles through the rain and she ran pretty damn solidly. Tracks straight-ish. Why mess with it?

Yeah I doubt I'll do too much. Blackout rear panel, restore the rims back to gunmetal w/. polished lip, shorty antenna and window tint. This car needs a lot more TLC on the brakes & suspension than anywhere else.

Also polluting, loud and illegal straight pipes on a street car are quite frankly still *hilarious*. Good thing I'm not commuting anywhere regularly in this car. :smh:

The shifter in the XR is a Steeda. It was the T5 shifter that everyone everywhere recommended. That is my sole experience with anything even somewhat Mustang related.

Yup. First I need to take time to identify the problems... so first problem:

When I tap the brakes at speed, Miss Match pulls slightly to the left. Unnoticeable at slower speeds but significantly enough of a pull to put me towards the next lane/shoulder. The brake pads are about 35% remaining on the fronts.

So figure out if there's a sticking piston or summat then replace the pads, install stainless braided brake lines and new juice. Thoughts?

Likely possibility: The brakes on the GTs used phenolic pistons that absorb water out of the brake fluid and balloon and end up sticking. It's a very common problem, apparently. One that I'd never heard of until that happened on the XR during it's sleep - the right front would not retract. Then it happened last week on the left front. :down:

Replacement pistons are about $6 through rockauto. Or you can just replace the whole caliper - they're about $50/pr. We are also investigating the possibility of using f-body rear brake pistons in SN95 front brake calipers. Both are 45mm pistons.

Yep I've already ordered the rear blackout vinyl, a shorty antenna and new headlight bulbs. But I'll keep the stock spoiler for now; I'm torn between painting it matte black for cheap or investing in a different wing.

I might have been wrong about "Fear This" in the '90s. The more I think about it, it seems like "Fear This" appeared (at first on monster trucks) in the 2000s in reply to all the teal and purple "No Fear" stickers from the '90s.

It was similar to how the '80s "Baby On Board" signed spawned all the silly knock-offs, like "Mother-In-Law In Trunk", "Baby Carries No Cash", and other highway hilarities.

I hear that -- my preferred SN95 years would be '96 through '98. I feel that the New Edge design language is jarring by comparison.

The stock steering is heavy and feels underboosted. Steering slop (aka an ever growing dead spot in the steering) is a very common problem in the Fox & SN95 cars so if you do get into them, be aware: the rubber bits in the steering linkage go dry and shrink, there are a series of pinch bolts than can work themselves loose over time/mileage and there's a steering shaft bearing on the firewall that can also go bad (in addition to the usual things in old cars like dead OEM bushings, tie-rod ends or a tired rack-and-pinion).

This car feels pretty tight, steering-wise -- but the bushings must be shit since I do get some side-to-side drift at highway speeds. #stillworthit #lovingit

I imagine the upside is no end of suppliers who can replace everything with heim joints and anodized fanciness. :) My buddy and I keep talking about a dedicated HPDE car and Mustangs are high on the list. A busted up GT with a pile of fun suspension goodies would be a-ok.

Of course, by the time I get around to late '90s cars, there's a good chance I'd just skip all of it and go straight for an S197. A 200? GT can be had for well under ten grand around here. I like the size of the SN95 better but it may not ultimately matter. I dunno. Like, in general. I dunno what I am doing ever.

I think the only way they work is with larger-side wheels, a spoiler, and an optional hood bulge replacing the fake intake and maybe some sort of treatment in the fake door intakes. I think the spoiler delete and retro wheels is folly.

Yeah, lack of rear visibility and blindspots drive me nuts. I was driving a loaner mini Paceman last week, and between the relatively small back glass and the GIGANTIC round rear headrests, I was going crazy backing out of parking spots.

I really can't put my finger on it, but I think it has something to do with alluding to classic Mustang styling cues on a car that worked reasonably hard to distance itself from the totally retro (for the time) OG SN95. I feel like New Edge was such a solid design language that one should work to play off its strengths rather than try and allude to other cars. The Saleen and the Cobra had really strong riffs off the core style, they'd be the direction I'd take. More angles are definitely called for. :D

I really feel like the spoiler is a requirement. Spoiler-delete sleepers work for some cars, but on a Mustang they veer off way too far towards rental V6. The only way you can make a spoiler delete work is with a blower under the hood. ;)

I feel that the '96-'98 are the best of the "modern retro" Mustangs. Perhaps the New Edge design was a response to the more forward-looking 4th gen F-body design? Could definitely explain why they don't look as good with the classic touches -- which again speaks to my thoughts that it's futile to try to make an NE SN95 look like a '69 Boss 302 or '70 Mach 1.

I really feel like the spoiler is a requirement. Spoiler-delete sleepers work for some cars, but on a Mustang they veer off way too far towards rental V6. The only way you can make a spoiler delete work is with a blower under the hood. ;)
Eh, I could buy the argument that "spoiler delete" is meant for more modern looks. I think that if your NE SN95 has any sort of raised Boss-style spoiler, that hearkens back to retro styling -- whereas spoiler-delete could definitely be viewed as more modern, Bullitts be damned.

There were Saleens other than the S281, were there not? And of course Saleen had (has?) a big catalog to do as much or as little of an S281 as you'd like. I don't think there's any shame in picking from the catalog. In any case, it's no more wrong to mimic an S281 than a Boss or Mach or Bullitt or even one of these.

As for spoilers, the only thing I think of when I see an SN95 without one is Rental. It doesn't need to be a bridge spoiler, but some duck tail or platform or something is an absolute requirement.

One of the previous owners did put on a pair of matching pony-delete grilles on the front. Those, along with the smoked headlights & fog lights, already make for a pretty modern look on the front end.

Currently the Bananastang has suffered a series of small issues:

1. Driver's side power window motor is dying. I got caught with the window (and my proverbial pants) down yesterday. Letting the car sit overnight in my garage gave the motor one last cool down needed to roll it back up but its days are numbered. Replacement motor is $63 and three nuts & screws.

2. Airbag light came on. There's an easy way to clear it but to fix it takes some work. Still looking into this.

3. Stereo popped off of its mountings. Must have been wedged in there (:rolleyes:) so I'm gonna have to tear the dash apart and see why it wasn't screwed into place.

Janky 1-DIN in a 1.5-DIN slot corrected with help from a $15 generic installation kit from Best Buy. Yes I know I could have bought one online for less than half that but my time is worth the $10. :finger:

Looks good but since it's an aftermarket Sony CDX-GT72W head unit that's been bastard-wedded to the factory PITA MACH 460 system, it still sounds shitty. :lol:

Is it being overdriven, or something else? I don't know how the Mach system works, but it's probably like most others... high level from the factory head unit into an amp, with slightly off input impedances to totally hose DIYers. :)

Don't rightly know -- the previous installation looked like it was done by Hannibal Lecter: shits been hacked off and eaten behind the head unit.

I do have Fade and Balance response; more exploration is required to know if it's just the stock music levels, badly blown OEM units or a poison pill from Ford messing up the bass.

Baby in his rear-facing seat, Lou in his booster. *whew* The Camry was dragging ass a little bit. :D Still got 27mpg, even with the roof box and shade structure up on the rack. :hard:

At any given point in the rev range power output will be similar and it's not like the wheezer is going to rev higher. I mean, it could, but this one doesn't.

The front end on the Bananastang is still fairly tight and drivable, highway drift notwithstanding. I really doubt that I will need to have the front end redone anytime soon (read: drivable for years).

At this point I'd rather save up for new lowering springs & dampers, rims & tires, the Maximum Motorsports Torque-Arm kit, subframe connectors, aluminum driveshaft and have some sort of Ford Racing/Auburn Gear/Eaton LSD installed first AS WELL AS getting the clutch/flywheel/shifter feel sorted, returning the headlights/foglights/grille back to OEM stock -- and then getting the paint massaged and patched up!!

As George would understand, that's plenty to save up for! :lol: #tenyearplan
