Yeah that Simpsons House looks amazing. I'm not sure if I'll pick one up but I'm very tempted. I think it'll be far too big to display anywhere and it doesn't look all that exciting to build, unless you're into tan bricks I guess.

In crazy new some dude over at Eurobricks has made a CAD lego Super Star Destroyer (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90341). From 71,000 bricks.
Absolutely nuts. But the thing is spot on, painstakingly accurate. He just needs the $25,000 to buy the parts and build it for real...

In far less crazy, and much less ambitious, lego news I couldn't resist the Rockerfeller Centre (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=21007-1) on sale for £25. I also picked up the Millennium Falcon (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=75030-1) from the new microfighters series.

I ordered my MSL rover along with a few other things to go over the free shipping threshold, expecting them all to ship at once later this month when Curiosity comes back into stock.

I was pleased to find that the other items shipped yesterday, with Curiosity coming in another shipment. All free postage

I think this is quite possibly the greatest thing about the new Lego movie. Have a close look.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7312/10831879815_372d03e3cd_b.jpg

Beaten up old school helmet with broken chin bar. Who didn't have a few of these in the 80s?

Worn out classic space logo on the chest. Another link to the old days. Virtually every kid with a decent Lego collection has one of these.

But look in the background... Do I spy a ship in old classic space blue/grey/yellow livery? I think I do!

Could we be possibly treated to a new set in classic space colours, but made with new parts as a tie-in to the movie?

I don't nerdgasm often. I will if a set comes out like this.

Pic is somewhat unrelated to these two which have been floating around. A set this big would be too much for a movie tie-in with a side character.

My Curiosity rover hadn't arrived yet :sadbanana:

So I checked my order on the Lego website to see what was up, and it showed that the delivery was cancelled :?

Something about me not responding to a message (which I never got) asking if I still wanted it, even after I called on the 17th to make sure it was still coming :thppt:

I quick phone call later and the nice lady re-opened my order and sent it to dispatch :toast:

I then asked nicely, since I had to wait so long, if I could please get it sent express instead of regular shipping, and she said yes and apologised for the mistake

Now I just wait for my confirmation email and hope like heck that she doesn't accidentally charge me $60 to ship a $50 set :snap:

More Lego Awesomeness!!

Build With Chrome (http://inhabitat.com/build-with-chrome-game-lets-you-virtually-make-lego-creations-anywhere-in-the-world/) app lets you create fantasy life-size buildings right from your computer or handheld device. The app is also integrated with Google Maps, so you can build crazy structures in even the most unforgiving terrain.

Build With Chrome lets LEGO freaks get their fix virtually anywhere. Users can dive right in, or learn the software in the Build Academy, which offers games, challenges and tips for building. Each virtual “kit” is well organized, with color coded pieces in varying sizes lined up waiting for use. Like the real thing, each piece makes that satisfying clicking noise when attached to another.

Linked to Google Maps, the program lets you build a LEGO dream house on any plot around the world, fusing the fantasy with reality. Users can also save and share their designs with other fans around the world, or build side by side.

Build With Chrome is available on your computer, or on your hand held Android phone or tablet, sucking up your time even away from the computer. The release of the App coincides with “The Lego Movie,” which opens in late February.

I finally got around to ordering the book for this from the arvobrothers.

http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/198kkofswrjohjpg.jpg

It worked out at £32ish posted, which isn't too bad for a low run book with all the stickers and everything. They very kindly sent me a parts list to put into bricklink. The first store I tried would cost me nearly £280 for only 216 out of 245 different lots. This could be expensive if I go past the "interesting coffee book" phase. I can't find anyone who has built it yet so I don't really have a ballpark for what it should cost, so for now I think I'll wait for the book to arrive then work out dimensions and costs and go from there.

Lego scalpers are a particular low form of scumbag.
During a recent promotion in the UK you could get a free polybag with the purchase of a national newspaper. One guy bought a box of 50 polybags from a store running the deal for 9 euros, presumably under the counter. Then boasted that if anyone couldn't get one because the store had run out, they were available in his bricklink store for a mere 3 euros each.
He genuinely couldn't see a problem with his behavior.

What an utter cunt.

gonna take a stab at the Sears Tower. I know it's been done before, but, it's something "simple" (due to being boxes/tubes). I've designed/and re-designed it 4 times in LDD, the worst part (cost) is going to be the "windows". I'm refining the floor designs to incorporate the least amount of bricks as possible.

The first one had full floors (plates), prior to exporting the parts BOM and looking up the prices. Fuck that.

Latest (rev 4) has no "solid" floors, except the top section of floors, which there is only one every 10th floor for structural rigidity (a pattern repeated on every 10th floor, actually).

I did two designs (scales). The "mini" is an 18x18 (Lego unit) base (9 6x6 tubes), and will be about 20-24" high, or (but it has 2000 1x2 flat clear plates, which again, is lubeless rapage).

Then there's the bigger one. Which is on a 24x24 footprint (9 8x8 tubes). I just did a mock up with 2x4 bricks to see what the end height would be, which will be about 50-52", without antennae.

From what I've seen, the cost difference between the big one and the little one isn't that drastic.

It's going to be a WIP for sure. I don't need 6500 bricks to show up at once....

Well call this one a "beta":

Have you tried BrickLink/BrickOwl? That's where I got all my stuff. You can also find sellers with sets/etc there as well.

Including the Imperial SSD that I'm keeping my hand away from the mouse to click add to cart...

Everyone's favourite generic green-and-white LMP finally has some new images available.
Those who don't mind spoilers can seek out the PDF instructions on the Lego website.

I think I've found the explanation for the design changes we saw between this and the leaked
pre-production pictures from back in October. The headlights must've changed to allow the
addition of Power Functions lights, and they must've deleted the rear fin to allow the rear cowling to hinge up

From here: http://www.lego.com/en-us/technic/products/42039-24-hours-race-car

And, uh, it's available now on Lego Shop dot com and uhhhhh, I just ordered one dot com.

$160 in Aussie dollars. I added the Ideas Lego Birds set to get over the $200 free shipping threshold.

Or did I buy the birds and add this to get over $200....?

And yeah it does look funny. Oversized cockpit and odd wheel arches. But there are constraints with the Lego medium that can't be met by set designers who also have to build a viable product that's robust and meets their company's high standards.

25 hours or so (building)
8-10 hours with LDraw, de/re-designing, trying to find the most efficient + 4-5 hours "researching/purchasing" bits (most came from US folks, a couple batches came from abroad (Poland ("atrium" archway at base), and Denmark (Pick A Brick)).

Just ordered parts for a DIY TIE fighter.

Store(s) has/have it for $140-150. Fuck that.

I built it in LDRAW from the build instructions, made a BOM for it, and got all the bits from 4 stores for $68. ($6 of which was just the pilot minifig....)

I wonder if I can repeat this for one of the UCS ships (really eyeballing the shuttle, that thing is all sorts of bad ass, but $500-600 is ass-stretching).

Mr Wonder
January 18th, 2015, 07:33 AM
For some of the UCS sets it works out cheaper, but it really depends on what you're building. I looked at bricklinking the UCS star destroyer. There are a lot of parts unique to that set, particularly the grey wheels for the three main engines which are currently going for around £45 each. The two shield generators on top of the bridge come in at £70 each. That's nearly £275 (the whole set retailed for £250) and you've only got to get another 2999 other parts. Forget the Falcon.
That said there are only a few rare parts in the shuttle, the rarest of which is around £3-8 and you need ten of them. It might actually be doable.

I just "built" the UCS Tie Interceptor in Ldraw, haven't priced out parts.

The shuttle or the AT-ST are next on deck.

The big SSD is ridiculous. As is the SD, neither of which I have room for.

I should get the TIE bits this week. I'll get it together and grab a couple pics.

One thing about "recreating" the UCS models, you don't have to necessarily worry about it being "perfect", and can make some (what I call) field modifications.

For example, the TIE INT has blue shit on it, I think it looks horrible. So I changed them to dark grey on the model.

The mini-figs and sticker/plaques for the stands/bases are where you get raped (thus, why I'm not going that far with them). EG: AT-ST plaque is $50 on BL.

I may get a Vader MF, because, well, it's Vader, and you should just have him on your desk (need a Fett too).

Award for most ridiculously priced MF goes to: Greedo. $125 on BL, best I've seen. Jesus.

As far as buying the retail kits, fuck that. The shuttle is $500-600. There's no way parting it out will be half that. The Star Destroyer (the smaller one) is almost $1000, best (cheapest) I've seen.

The UCS Falcon is in rarefied air/level all its own, I'm not sure I've seen it anywhere for under $4000. re-fucking-diculous.

Rare White Ape
January 19th, 2015, 07:04 PM
The rare part on the UCS Falcon is the two pieces that cover the engines at the rear, originally designed as pirate ship netting. They come in grey for the Falcon instead of the usual brown. You guessed it; rediculous prices.

Rare White Ape
January 20th, 2015, 12:02 AM
Trouble is modern Lego sets have really basic instructions that have steps that contain two or three pieces. They're still tricky to assemble, but it's... do a step, find three parts, turn the page, do another step, find three parts, turn the page, etc.

My old Technic 8880 had steps with 30 parts in them and required you to be really in your game. It was finished in under 100 steps, this took 166.

That would explain the encyclopedia that comes with big sets now. And the B model... You have to download the instructions for that. Over 100MB I think.

I started building the 10212 shuttle in Ldraw. 4 books (pdf, in this case) total of 340 pages. But yeah, one "step" is putting two 1x1 plates on the ends of a 1x4 plate...

They could make it like a puzzle, and only show a full sub-assembly, and you have to figure it out....

drew
January 20th, 2015, 04:32 PM
The mechanics of the program don't always allow you to complete "assemble" it within. You just make the sub-assemblies the best you can and export the BOM. That's my only reason.

That, and I'm finding a bunch of seemingly useless fluff/shit parts added to these things that I see no purpose (like transparent 1x1 plates, buried/enclosed within the main body of hte shuttle that you would never see once assembled). So, it's a lesson in efficiency

It's probably worth recolouring it to light grey instead of white. Maybe someone on Eurobricks or FBTB (centres of the crazy replica UCS Falcon universe) has done it already if you want to see what it might look like.

Well, it seems to be I'm building *something* once a month. Just ordered the bits for the UCS 10174 AT-ST (parts, not the kit itself).

Parted out it was $150. Buying as kit (Amazon/Ebay/BL/BrickOwl): $300+

I really want to build Vader's TIE (#10175). It's $600 almost everywhere (and up). It will still be a spendy build, considering just the canopy is $80. Building may be on pause after the walker, due to no space for these big bastards....

I built the little T-16 Skyhopper the other day (great set, BTW) and couldn't help thinking that the Star Wars sets have been a great source of parts for those who just LOVE grey, grey and more grey.

That AT-ST looks like a great pile of grey plates and bricks if you wanted to tun it into, say, a model of a very grey thing.

drew
February 24th, 2015, 03:27 AM
The problem with this method (which in no way outweighs the drastic discount of cost) is when you buy the bits from 4-5 different stores, and the last one has parts that are required for each of the 6-7 main sub-assemblies...

There are 5 parts that apparently don't exist, or peeps are asking for retirement for them. 45677, or the "car hood", used as a shield on this one. The design calls for dark grey, but I just used black. Fuck it.

I was going to start putting it together, but each main stage had bricks that are in a shipment that was delayed by the fucked up weather we had here last week....

Looking at teh Tantive IV, preliminarily, I may need to find an alternate approach. The red wheels used for the engine trim are anywhere from $20-30 each, and there's 11 of them. ffs. People know what those are used for, and rape you for it. Best so far are the giant wheels/engines for the ISD/SSD at $70 each.

Which is fine, because as mentioned, I don't have room for those behemoths anyway.

Rare White Ape
February 24th, 2015, 03:36 AM

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7650/16240466263_0e81412a79_b.jpg

It's missing a gearbox and engine, plus I've made a few changes in the name of accuracy, but it's still a work in progress.

Should I order the parts and build it for myself? Hmm. Lord only knows. If I did it would certainly rank as one of the nerdiest things I've ever done, if this isn't already nerdy enough. It certainly wouldn't be the strongest creation ever built, but then again I suspect that 99% of the cool Lego models you see people come up with wouldn't pass the kid play test in a million years.

I fucked around making the 10242 (mini) set in LDD this weekend. Standard set is BRG with white roof, I made a red with checkerboard roof and left hand drive (even if they never made those, properly :finger:)

Yep. Just had to re-work it a bit. Not all the part IDs it produces are "accurate" (parts that have newer/updated part IDs). so I have LDD open and put the part in and get the number for it from that.

That said, I'm up to about $120, and a 1/2 way through finding prices.

No single part is overly spendy. The biggest offender being the rear wheels at about $10 each.

I'm also not putting prices in for those items I already have (like the connecting pins that I have 100s of each).

the hard part, that I see, are the specific colors of a couple of the bricks/shafts (TAN), which are hard as shit to find. There may be some substitutions.

The other thing I do, is if it calls for a rare color of something, but it's a part that's buried inside the built kit, I change the color to something you can find. Case in point, a 12-tooth gear in medium stone grey (per plans). I found one on Brick Owl (didn't look on BL yet), for $70. Black one is 20 cents. So there you go.

P34 bits ordered (some, anyway).

4 front wheels/tires, and 2 rear wheels/tires ordered. From Hungary, so, I guess I've got a while before I need to worry about getting things together.

Haven't ordered anything else beyond that yet.

I have a cart in another store on Brick Owl that has about $100 worth of shit.

Still have 140 parts to get (part types) that this particular store didn't have.

That cart and the tires/wheels from Hungary put it at about $150 so far.

I'm guessing it'll top out about 2 hundo. The remaining parts aren't rare by any stretch, but there are some big spendy plates in it. Shit I don't have laying around.

So some of the parts for hte Tyrrell are apparently non-existent, so substitutions/alternate designs were required.

Haven't pulled the trigger on all parts yet (it took 14 different stores to find them all). I have ordered a few. Tires/wheels are coming from Austria and the various specialty plates/rare shit is coming from a big store in the Czech Republic. I figured those two would have the biggest lead time.

All told, it looks like it's going to be about $300 for all the parts (I did order "extras" of some things, since they're good to have). I think the plans called for 1520 parts, I have about 1650 (various extra axles/connectors/common shit) in all carts.

At what point did you guys start playing with LEGO? As very young children, or did you pick it up later in life?

Rare White Ape
July 29th, 2015, 03:19 PM
I had Lego from the very beginning. Duplo, Basic and Fabuland sets from like 2 years old or something. We had Duplo at pre-school. I remember arguing with the other kids over the Duplo train set - nobody ever cooperated enough to build the whole thing and have all the tracks laid out. Stupid 4 year olds!

Later on I got classic space hand-me-downs from my cousin, who was 2 years older than me. In fact, those pieces (which we still have somewhere) might be from the 70s, my cousin was born in 1980. At five my parents bought me a proper Lego train set (http://brickset.com/sets/7710-1/Push-Along-Passenger-Steam-Train). I eventually graduated to Legoland (now called City) and Space, then Pirates, then I got my first Technic set for Christmas at 8 or 9 years old. It wasn't until the middle of high school before I stopped getting Lego, as I discovered video games and remote control car racing. I did buy a few of the cheap mini Star Wars sets before I was 20 but that was it.

I went through what Lego afficionados call the Dark Ages, where you grow up and stop buying Lego for some time. I couldn't have picked a better era, as most Lego sets through the 2000s became utter shit. Bionicle (fuck Bionicle) was introduced. The quality of Technic sets dropped considerably. Lego's parts portfolio grew enormously and minifig-scale sets became over-simplified to buggery. About the only good thing in those days was Lego Star Wars, and if it wasn't for that keeping the company afloat, Lego would be owned by Mattel right now.

I didn't own any new Lego sets all through my 20s, then my parents bought me a Star Wars set as a bit of a gag for my 30th birthday, coz I was all growed up now. But the stupid fucks bought me a Clone Wars set when they could've easily bought an equivalent (and much much cooler) OT set, so I had to go out and fix that myself. $20 later I owned a Speeder Bike and a little tree scene. It included a stormtrooper, a scout trooper, and two generic Rebel commandos in forest camo.

I sat dormant with those two sets for a few months, then one day, bloody fucking Paul Leins (who we know as The End) posted a pic on Facebook of the big new Space Shuttle Expedition that he bought. Then I had to own one. $120 later...

Well, make that a couple of thousand bucks later, and now we here. I have Lego sets sitting all over the place, and lots stored in boxes downstairs.

In my experience, buying and selling on Bricklink is a bloody good thing.

F'rinstance, I wanted a Snowspeeder two years ago, so I bought the Battle of Hoth set which was current at the time; it came with a Snowspeeder, a Tauntaun a white speeder bike, and a snowy trench scene with cannons and stuff. The seller stripped out the minifigs to sell separately and put everything in a padded bag (no box) and shipped it to me for something like half price.

I kept the Snowspeeder and the speeder bike, and quickly sold the Tauntaun and the pieces for the trenches for more than half of what I paid in the first place, meaning that I paid about $20 incl. shipping all told for the Snowspeeder, from a set which costs $80, and is similar to last year's Snowspeeder which costs $50.

I wish I kept the Tauntaun though.
