View Full Version : What did F1 look like when you were born?

This thread is partially (well, mostly) inspired by XHawkeye's balls-out good pic.twitter.com thread.

I made up a little game. Find the next Grand Prix after your birth and post a pic of the winning car.

For me the British GP of 1982 happened to be on my birthday and the winner was Niki Lauda in a McLaren-Ford. Back then they ran ground-effects and some drivers chose not to run front wings at some circuits. I was probably less than 36 hours old...

The race must be one valid for final championship points or not? Back in the days they did run 3-4 non-point races, which were fully official F1 championship races.

NON-point race - Race of Champions, 17th of March 1974 at Brands Hatch - winner Jacky Ickx on Lotus 72
http://obviousmag.org/archives/uploads/2007/070507_blog.uncovering.org_lotus72-ickx-1974.jpg

Point race - South African GP, 30th of March 1974 at Kyalami [one of my favourite tracks ever! - Peter Revson died during practice :( ] - winner Carlos Reutemann on Brabham-Ford Cosworth BT44

I was born during the off-season before the 1982 season, so Alain Prost at Kyalami 17 days later is the guy for me (they had a race in January?!).

He won despite having a puncture while leading.

In the old times they used to race the 2nd of January or about, even.

Ironically, the Canadian GP, 1971. Jackie Stewart won the race in heavy rain after it was red-flagged.

This was from the right year.
But the first race after I was born was a non championship race at Goodwood

A young fellow called Jackie Stewart got pole
But Jim Clark won the race.

I was 17 days old at the time of the first F1 Grand Prix in Canada, in the year of Grand Prix Legends.

Jack Brabham won it in the Brabham BT24.

Edit: heh, found this on Wikipedia:

"Having already changed his battery on the grid, losing six laps, Al Pease spun and stalled out on the circuit during the race, and suffered another flat battery. He ran back to the pits for a new one, ran back to the car, fitted the battery himself and continued. He was still running at the finish, albeit 43 laps down on the winner."

Born in December, so the next GP was the 86 opener in Brazil. Senna wins pole, but Piquet gets the win.

The 1972 Italian Grand Prix @ Monza was the next race after my birthday. Jackie Ickx sat on pole in a Ferrari 312, but the race was won by Emerson Fittipaldi, who also cliched the season championship (and the constructors' championship for Lotus-Ford), becoming the youngest to do so until Alonso won his a few decades later.

Race trivia from Wikipedia: this was the first race @ Monza with chicanes on the main straight and at Ascari. Fittipaldi's car was apparently a 1970-spec car due to a transporter accident on the way to the race that wrecked his 72D.

Ickx's not-highly-attractive 312B:

Fittipadli's car wasn't that much better, though this is the all-conquering Lotus 72, so it at least has that going for it:

I should have got race 1 of 1963 but I'll settle for race 3 and my compatriot Jim Clark in one of his wins in his first title-winning season:

Oh, hey, me too. Except the race took place just a few hours after I was born. :)

I wonder if the GP of Long Beach will ever get F1 again...

1979, so the Lotus 80 was an experiment that didn't work out.

Doesn't matter, though since they ended up creating the ELise.

Jesus you people are old.

Formula One season finale at Watkins Glen, about 1 month before I was born. I won't post that abortion that Il Commendatore forced Gilles to drive.

Instead, this:
