nor 99.9999% of the rest of America supports that kind of thinking.

Way too generous.

I'd put racists/xenophobes somewhere between 10 and 20 per cent of the whole of America.
Not because of Trump support, but because there's been an institutional effort, mostly from the Rove-doctrine'd GOP, to reach out and promote that sort of shit as long as it means support for their ideologically-devoid, utilitarian policy making.

Yeah, I'm super close to blocking him too. I feel like I can deal with his level of crazy - it's like fighting a bull. But lately he's getting into fights with my real life friends, and my main job is to tell my friends a) why I'm friends on FB with him and b) how he's going to attempt to argue with them in the hopes that they'll just leave him to his own devices. I don't like that being my job.
Yeah Roofer unfriended me after I deleted one of his inflammatory comments on my FB wall.

Trump is handing over everything to Pence, I don't think he's going to be impeached, I just think he's going to do nothing but give speeches that the GOP establishment tell him to give. He's a good sales person, and frankly he doesn't give a damn about being POTUS, he just likes attention. He won't be 'grounded' unless he decides he actually cares about something and pushes for it.

FWIW my wife heard a woman say "if she's moving to Mexico she should at least learn the language" about a lady having a hard time explaining herself at the stationary.

So while it's a relatively high percentage of irrationality for a developed country, it is nowhere near as bad as we thirdworldies face daily.

AFAIK, Snipes illegally avoided taxes he actually owed. Trump used loopholes to not owe.

At least as far as we know. Who knows what the IRS is looking at with their audits. Which, are probably being tossed aside now that he's President-Elect.

Tom Servo
November 12th, 2016, 06:57 PM
Yeah...Trump sounds like he used something that was just on the boundaries of legal. Given that he basically spends every waking moment under some sort of IRS audit, I get the impression that his phalanx of lawyers and accountants specialize in that. And, a lot like Trump himself, does a good job of toeing the line between outright fraud and "just being a good businessman."

Tom Servo

Admittedly, Clinton may also have done things on the boundary of legal, but apparently that was a problem for the people okay with Trump's similar stance.

I believe he used depreciation/losses on his assets (which were huge, failed casinos or something) to get tax credits of just under a billion. But he can't use that all at once, so it gets spread out over like 30 years. It's legal, and good for someone that might own a small business or something.

Anyone can do it.

I think technically, if you buy a $30,000 car, you can claim that much in depreciation immediately. If your tax burden is $10k, you can spread it out over three years and not pay a dime. However, you better drive that car into the ground, because if you sell it, you now owe that much in Taxes. Or something like that. My dad tried explaining it to me the other day.

This is going to be needlessly long, unrelated to your lives, and anecdotal.

My sister hit me up yesterday, saying she was worried about my mom. That she'd basically been holed up crying since the election. Tried calling yesterday, but only got my dad. Called again today and talked to her for an hour or so.

I don't know if I've ever heard my mom this upset. Just crying that she never thought that the world her kids lived in would end up with a fascist as a president.

I tried to convince her it'd be okay with a lot of the shit I tell myself. As a country we are mostly progressive. As a state, CA is incredibly powerful politically and VERY progressive. My belief that this election is blacklash, the death throes of a dying system.

I can't tell you how heartbroken I was to hear my mom crying.

Her best friend is a Republican and she's afraid to talk to her for fear of losing her friend. I told her that there are plenty of Republicans that aren't on board with Trump, but she's afraid to ask.

I encouraged her to call the ACLU or Planned Parenthood to volunteer. Seemed like it helped, but she sounds so defeated.

I don't know why I'm posting this. I don't know if I want advice, or just to be able to vent, or what. I just know that I did my damndest to make things seem less terrifying, but felt like a fraud doing it.

All the shit that's gone down really has me thinking some crazy thoughts... or maybe not so crazy.

If Lori and I do not leave the country on our own, are eventually going to be deported because we are immigrants? Probably not because we're white. On the other hand, maybe, because Lori is an intellectual and a climate scientist to boot. I am just an entertainer.

When the gustapo comes to collect the immigrants, do we run or fight? How bad does it have to be for us to do one of those things?

Do I need to start taking martial arts and buy a gun, not to defend myself, but to defend my fellow human beings from hate crimes?

I would rather not be deported, but I will if I get arrested for participating in demonstrations. How long can I stand by and allow this country to regress back to the Jim Crow era?

Now that these thoughts are on the internet, are the men in black going to show up in February and ship me to Guantanamo?

Sad, little man
November 14th, 2016, 05:40 AM
Cam, in my limited experience, you will probably have a lot of forewarning before actually getting arrested in relation to a protest. I've never felt like I've even been close. I'm sure that every police department handles it differently, but Detroit PD has seemed pretty permissible towards protests. As long as you're part of a group that's large enough, the police can only really hope to contain and manage the crowd. It's not like they're just going to just wade into the crowd and start arresting people. Besides, it's not worth the hassle to do that to someone who hasn't really acted out.

Don't let the fear of being arrested keep you from protesting. Just show up to one and feel it out.

Also, use a camera, not a gun. Use Bambuser (if that's still the leading app) to upload video immediately to the Cloud (Dropbox / OneDrive / Google Drive / etc.) so that if your phone is smashed, you've still got the video. Bambuser Inc. has also set up direct feeds in countries where their governments have tried to block/censor the Internet such as Egypt, Bahrain, and Syria. It's very possible that the NSA might block Bambuser as well but for now they're probably the best bet.

This is a tough situation - Morally, it can't be held against you if demonstrating will put you in danger of really heavy-duty consequences such as deportation and separation from your wife. I'm fortunate that I'm in a position where if s#!t goes bad, negative externalities are minimized - I can't be deported, and its highly unlikely that I'd be fired for anything short of murder (hooray liberal departments in academia).
If you do want to participate and are worried about it, you might consider going with some black bloc tactics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_bloc) - remember, they can't arrest all of you, especially if they can't positively ID.

-------------

A coworker was trying to justify his Jill Stein vote with the typical " i live in California so my vote wouldn't have mattered anyway because Hillary won" I chastised him by telling him that people like him who wanted to "assuage their poor wittle conscience" with their vote were the reason why Trump won. He came back with the "California voted for Hillary" and I cut him off and said "people like you"

As it stands, the house will never have a democratic majority due to gerrymandering. And instead of term limits, we need to eliminate the money (I know, tall order). And barring any elected or appointed government official from lobbying jobs afterwards would also help. Trumps presidency only confirms this...

The Most Entitled Generation Isn't Millennials (http://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-entitled-generation-isnt-millennials-2015-1)

For the first time in America’s history, an entire generation of her citizens are poorer, more indebted, and less employed than the preceding generations.

Our generation has been called “entitled.” We beg to differ. If any generation is entitled, it’s our parents’ and grandparents’ generation: the baby boomers.

True entitlement is tripling the national debt since the 1980s and using the proceeds to spend lavishly on tax cuts and government programs that primarily provided short-term economic boosts, while refusing to raise the Social Security age of retirement or to reduce benefits, even as the gluttonous program careens toward unsustainability.

True entitlement is allowing the reasonable minimum wage that Baby Boomers enjoyed when they were our age to deteriorate while opting to cut taxes on the gains from stocks and bonds that they accrued during periods of debt-driven economic and stock-market surges — creating an economy where wage earners at all income levels, as of 2012, receive a smaller portion of economic output at any time since 1929.

I'm not too wise on politics, but i'd assume the broken promises of mayors, prime ministers, and presidents probably has more to do with the people who work under them as opposed to them personally backtracking.

The stats people, the money people, the health people, the lawyers, and whoever else probably have to talk the leader down to a compromise on his/her promises. Unfortunately they never admit this, so everyone naturally lays all the blame on them.

That won't be the case all the time, but thats how i honestly see it.

No doubt. And I think nobody reasonable would expect any politician to be able to deliver on all their promises. Beyond that, there are tons of variables - Obama had a really obstructionist congress to deal with. I still thought it was interesting, especially if you dig into each one a bit.

Trump supporter used internment to justify Muslim policy (http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/17/politics/trump-supporter-internment-muslim-registry/)

"It is legal, they say it will hold constitutional muster," Higbie said. "We've done it with Iran, back a while ago, we did it during World War II with the Japanese, which, call what you will."
Kelly interjected: "Come on, you're not proposing we go back to the days of internment camps, I hope."
"I'm just saying there is precedent for it, and I'm not saying I agree with it," Higbie replied.
Kelly again appeared incredulous, saying talk like that scares Americans about what the President-elect might do.
"Look, the President needs to protect America first. And if that means having people that are not protected under our Constitution have some sort of registry so we can understand, until we can identify the true threat and where it's coming from, I support it," Higbie said.

http://brilliantmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/did-not-vote-2016.png

-As a percentage of eligible voters, Clinton received 26.27% (60,839,922) of all votes compared to Trump’s 26.02% (60,265,858) and Did Not Vote’s 43.1% (110,450,842).
-Total voter turnout was estimated to be 56.9%.
-It is the 5th election since 1820 when the winner of the popular vote lost the presidency (the others being 1824, 1876, 1888, and 2000)
-Donald Trump received 667,646 fewer votes than Romney did in 2012, but Hilary Clinton received 5,075,873 fewer votes than Obama did in 2012.
-Neither Candidate even won a majority of votes cast, Clinton got 47.8% vs Trump’s 47.3%.
-As a percentage of the entire US population (including those too young or other ineligible to vote) Clinton got votes from 18.73% of the population and Trump got votes from 18.56% of people.
-Washington DC is the only area in the country where a majority of all eligible voters (whether they voted or not) voted for Clinton (90% of voters, voted for Clinton on a 55.7% turnout). In the other 6 states listed above, victories were simple pluralities.

Look, it's reeeal simple and it's something that minorities/drug users/targeted groups have been dealing with for the past twenty years: if you are perceived as "breaking the law" by the police (either by REALLY breaking the law as in most cases, or by being argumentative enough that the authorities look for an excuse to accuse you), you either go into a labor camp or you get killed on the spot.

Trump's doing a pretty masterful job of getting everyone to talk about Hamilton instead of his settling for $25 million and now apparently having his hotel chain host a bunch of foreign diplomats to tell them how great it would be to stay at the Trump Hotel just down the street.

The conflict of interest thing aside (for someone that talked about Hillary being pay for play, how much do you want to wager it'll change Trump's interactions with foreign diplomats depending on whether or not they stayed at his hotel?), we cannot forget the fraud thing. It would easily have been an impeachable offense to be found guilty of fraud. He claims he had no time to go to trial because he's getting ready for the presidency, yet he's got time to fire off tweets about Hamilton and how Pence got a not-so-great reaction. And doesn't have a phalanx of lawyers that he regularly uses to SLAPP people with? Wouldn't they be handling the vast majority of it - it sounds like discovery is basically done at this point, and presuming he wouldn't testify in his own defense, I'd imagine he himself would have to do very little.

Trump U was a scam in the same way time-shares and places like the Landmark Forum and Scientology are. They prey on the weak and get them to spend until they can't anymore, then cast them aside. I have seen no signs that he won't do this as president.

Don't be distracted by this.

President-elect Donald Trump holds stock in the company building the disputed Dakota Access oil pipeline, and pipeline opponents fear his investments could affect any decision he makes on the $3.8-billion project.

Trump's 2016 federal disclosure forms show he owned between $15,000 and $50,000 in stock in Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners. That's down from between $500,000 and $1 million a year earlier.

Trump also owns between $100,000 and $250,000 in Phillips 66, which has a one-quarter share of Dakota Access.

While Trump's stake in the pipeline company is modest compared with his other assets, ethics experts say it's among dozens of potential conflicts that could be resolved by placing his investments in a blind trust, a step Trump has resisted.

The way you slowly get rid of racism (because there is no fast way) in a system and a people is you make them realize where it was happening when they weren't even thinking about it. You make them stare it in the face, realize what it looks like, and then they have to choose to actively avoid it. It's not about taking away guns, it's about making people realize that their knee jerk reaction to someone of a different color should not overcome the fact that person is a human being just like them, with their own struggles, successes, family, and friends.

Then as racist actions and words are thought but then questioned internally rather than being done or said, children and peers don't see or hear them. They are less likely to have those thoughts, because they have little reason to (especially if they grow up in a diverse environment). When they ask questions or make questionable assumptions, they should be taught appropriately.

It doesn't require minorities being in charge of everything, it requires people deciding that they will honestly evaluate their own thoughts, and what they've been taught directly and indirectly from their family, friends and life experiences. That's just as tough, though.

Appropriately the cuban example shows that rapid change can occur, that same example also shows that it will be halted by politics.

The (optimistic) view in the 1980s, even by African-descendant scholars, was that economic measures would rapidly even things out between different ethnicities.
The contemporary opinion is that even when race-promoted economic disparities disappear, minorities will be socially segregated if their public representations remain unrepresentative of their numbers in society. So it is important for communities to fight for accurate political and media portrayals so that they can accomplish the goal of equalness in parks, schools, courts of law and other public arenas.

So yes, as a scholarly exercise, black lives do matter. And that movement is as legitimate and as pertinent now because we've discovered that racism is well alive and it is breaking up countries, cities and families along race lines.

As for the cuban experience, it all went to the shitter when Castro realized that because it was such a divisive subject it was better to declare it solved and not put much public attention to it or else things would get nasty, quickly.

I'm not convinced that the recounts in those three states will change the results. As sad as it is, those results are probably accurate. I'm certainly happy to eat crow on that.

However, the Electoral College was created for exactly this kind of situation - in which a dangerous demagogue who is clearly unsuited to the office is elected, either by hook or by crook. The college can, and should, hand the election to Hillary Clinton. The college is supposed to be a bulwark against this sort of result.

Think about it, what if Prince Trumperdink said, "on day one, I'm going to start executing people who have said mean things about me." Would they still really be obligated to allow him to take the office? We're not at that point yet, but honestly, we're in a world of hurt.

And you're right, that probably would cause rioting.

But the fact that it would cause rioting is reason enough to know that anybody who campaigns the way the Agent Orange has is not going to be able to govern, and is bad for the country as a whole. His entire method of campaigning has ripped open decades-old wounds and animosities, and polarized the country in a way that it has not been polarized since just before the civil war. They are wounds that it will take decades to heal, if they are even capable of being healed. His agenda threatens to roll back 100+ years of foreign policy and domestic progress. We're actually talking about living in a world more similar to the America of 1916 than of 2006 or even 1956 were he to do all the things he says he wants to do. And all that before he's ever set foot in the office or been sworn in.

His election is a catastrophic event for the country and one which presents the very real possibility that we may spend the rest of our lives trying to put the pieces back together.

I can't disagree with much said here. I just wonder what will really happen. Will the chosen electorates cross the party lines here? It seems to me that politics has become more about power, and winning at any cost, that doing the right things. Maybe it was always that way, but with increased media, and social media attention it appears more vitriol to me now. The number needed to cross seems prohibitive.

My opinion, is if he isn't going to put his assets in a blind trust, he shouldn't be President. It ends right there. It shows an unwillingness to do what is right, and put the position first.

But, if the RNC chose him... and he won the election, and he wins the electorate... not much can be said. I feel bad for those who oppose him.... doubt this ends well, economically, socially... those that have supported him will deserve what they are going to get out of this.

Federal conflict of interest laws exempt the president, so there's not much we can do to force Trump to do anything...

Unbelievable. Why do we even have laws that exempt anybody? Why allow the president to be above the law? As if it's the low level employees that's cause the maximum corruption...

Oh, Trump is really good at gaming our system...

No actively serving elected official is exempt from the "Title of Nobility" clause in the Constitution, which expressly states:

no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.

Early on, a state call with the President Elect was made to Argentinian President Mauricio Macri. Trump International wants to build a tower in Buenos Aires and the subject came up on the call - according to sources within the Macri administration. Trump urged Macri to help get the permits done. The very next day, they were.

Such a situation is specifically prohibited by the Constitution, and for all Republicans' talk of how "Obama should follow the constitution" (they seem to have never read the constitution), here we are now.

He'll bleed us all dry.

But a norm is not a rule, a point Trump has leaned on. “The law is totally on my side, meaning, the president can’t have a conflict of interest,” he told the New York Times. Disturbingly, this is legally accurate. The strict federal rules about financial conflicts of interest do not apply to the president, whose incentive to avoid self-enrichment is simply assumed. There is no legal mechanism that requires transparency or accountability. In essence, Trump is proposing that we, not he, enter a blind trust: He promises that he will never misuse his power, and we … hope he’s right.

Since Trump has refused to disclose his tax returns, or those of his family members, it is possible that business owners or dictators are granting his family excessively generous licensing agreements, or even giving them stock options or cash in return for government favors. Given Trump’s business ethics, which run from refusing to pay contractors and daring them to sue to establishing a fake university to swindle his fans to using his “foundation” to illegally donate to a politician who subsequently did not investigate said university, it would be surprising if he did not eventually accept outright bribery. Once introduced into a political ecosystem, corruption in government tends to spread rapidly. It can infect foreign-policy-making, where overseas partners will seek favors from Trump’s administration, and domestically, where Trump and his allies could form a self-enriching circle that wields state power to exclude both economic competitors and political ones. Astonishingly, the president-*elect has treated the sanctity of government as a nonissue. In a recent tweet, he pronounced the question of his own enrichment through power to have been settled by the voters (or at least the Electoral College). “Prior to the election it was well known that I have interests in properties all over the world,” he wrote. “Only the crooked media makes this a big deal!” He is not even claiming innocence — he is placing the question itself off-limits.

There were enough guns sold on Black Friday alone to arm the marine corps. At least we're well enough equipped. :smh:

According to the FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer, Black Friday shattered the single-day record for gun sales – with 185,713 background checks processed in a 24 hour period.
Those numbers ignore the 20 states that allow millions of licensed concealed carriers to forego background checks on each purchase, in compliance with ATF guidelines. Also, more than one firearm can be purchased on a single background check. That means the number of firearms purchased on Black Friday is likely more than 200,000.

He said in a series of interviews that he does not need to read extensively because he reaches the right decisions “with very little knowledge other than the knowledge I [already] had, plus the words ‘common sense,’ because I have a lot of common sense and I have a lot of business ability.”

edit: well, I guess he reads some things.

He has no time to read, he said: “I never have. I’m always busy doing a lot. Now I’m more busy, I guess, than ever before.”

Trump’s desk is piled high with magazines, nearly all of them with himself on their covers, and each morning, he reviews a pile of printouts of news articles about himself that his secretary delivers to his desk. But there are no shelves of books in his office, no computer on his desk.

http://www.popsci.com/house-committee-on-science-just-tweeted-science-article-from-breitbart

On Thursday, the House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology took a jab at "climate alarmists" by tweeting an article from Breitbart News. "Global Temperatures Plunge," the tweet reads. "Icy Silence from Climate Alarmists."
The Committee, part of the United States House of Representatives, is in charge of non-defense federal scientific research and development. They have jurisdiction over NASA, the Department of Energy, EPA, ATSDR, NSF, FAA, NOAA, NIST, FEMA, the U.S. Fire Administration, and USGS.

Breitbart, which has gained infamy for publishing articles such as "Bill Kristol: Republican spoiler, renegade Jew," "Birth control makes women unattractive and crazy," and “Would you rather your child had feminism or cancer," cites U.K. tabloid The Daily Mail as its source for the climate change takedown. The article presents research arguing that recent increases in global temperature are the result of natural weather patterns, and perhaps not related to global warming. But many scientists have reported that these weather patterns are not sufficient to explain 2016's record-breaking temperatures.

Jury deadlocked (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/30/us/michael-slager-walter-scott-killing.html?_r=0) in the case of a police officer who, clearly under no threat and not in any danger, shot a black man in the back. This is the America black people live in.

But we have to keep waiting for ... i DON'T KNOW WHAT exactly.

I don't know how much more clear cut a case needed to be than this. The defense; self defense. Yes, Self defense. He was defending himself from a person who was running away from him.

Here's the video (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/michael-slager-indicted-shooting-walter-scott-south-carolina/) in case you don't know.

Not sure about other leaders..., but I thought it was kinda cool to finally break the ice with Taiwan president since Carter admin. It was probably the politically incorrect thing to do to ignore the one China policy and irked mainland Gina, but this time I side with Trump... If US can still sell Taiwan arms, it should be able to accept a congratulatory call from the president of Taiwan. No need to politically correctly pretend that Taiwan doesn't exist.

So Petraeus is a complete slut, and he will leash off his booty, consequences be darned.

So much for trying to stick Slick Willy's character flaws onto his wife. I don't think he was this careless or that they tarnished the Clintons professional endeavors.

That place is just down the street from me, I go there fairly regularly, and I order take-out regularly from another place a couple shops down from it. The whole block has been getting large amounts of harassing calls, tweets, emails, etc. We're talking people threatening their lives. And then this dude shows up with a gun? Pisses me off that our law enforcement agencies are not taking the alt-right seriously. There will likely be blood shed here soon, I fear.

DC's police force probably isn't among them. That being said, the FBI should be taking these assholes seriously, and I'm not sure they are.

It's become pretty evident that some (big?) portions of government are run by sectarious groups of assholes. I wouldn't even call them partisan groups, because they clearly represent the interests of groups within the parties.

Notably the intelligence bodies seem to be in such a fight with one another... there's the military spies, the congress-controlled security, the executive-controlled, the judiciary spies (the FBI, i guess)... that's a way to explain why the book was thrown at Snowden and why they let narcissists like Petreaus or Kobach go unreprimended, or the Hillary's bash-before-the-election.

Trump is selecting people that have ZERO experience in what they are going to be running. This is going to be such a shit show. :(

Trump taps Ben Carson for HUD secretary (http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/05/politics/ben-carson-hud-secretary-nomination/)
He probably doesn't even know what HUD stands for. :smh:

edit: just thought I'd add this nugget.
Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has told President-elect Donald Trump that he isn’t interested in serving as secretary of Health and Human Services, a Carson ally confirmed to The Hill on Tuesday…

“Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.”… A neurosurgeon didn't think he was qualified to run the Health & Human services dept. But, somehow he's now qualified to run the housing dept? :? Yup. That checks out! :toolbox: FFS

Ugh. I have to stop worrying about this... there's nothing I can do at this point. And worrying/complaining about it isn't going to help. Maybe I'll just ignore the next 4 years. Except for local elections, etc...

Remember, the cabinet members have to be confirmed by Congress.

While these may seem like slam dunks I think some of the appointments will be rejected. Carson has no business being the head of an agency having never worked in the field.

QFT!

Worrying about stuffs that's beyond your control really is pointless and can be hazardous to your health.

Trump being a master manipulator and won the election is one thing, but I honestly can't believe his supporters will be able to continue to support him after 1 or 2 years. Silverlining to all this is that perhaps this is the democrats chance to finally win back control of the Congress later on. There's gonna be backlashes..

Even in the unlike even that he IS a great president and actually made America great again, hey, I have no problem with that. I'll certainly have more respect for him if he achieves such feat. However, I seriously doubt he'll last more than a couple of years.

I like Trump solely for the fact that he single handedly destroyed the current political establishment. Now we have a chance to start something fresh! But of course we now have a risk of him starting something even worse, but we can keep a watchful eye and if he really steps too out of line, we'll have to intervene of course. In the mean time, I'm just not going to worry about it.

I don't think the Republican Congress will decline their new President's appointees. :( They own both the Senate and House.

Neither do 99% of the other people he's appointed.

It's like he's flipping us all off (especially the people he duped into voting for him), saying "Look at what I'm doing now!" He's just perpetuating the shitshow that started last year.

It's a game to him, picking the most ridiculous person for a given position, because he knows he'll stay in the news/spotlight for it. Example: the SNL Twitter shit. Because, narcissism.

I don't see congress rejecting any of his picks. The GOP had lot's of time/chances to disavow the tangerine twat in the last 29 months, and didn't. So that tells me, they're "in", if for nothing else than to save face. Which, I think, scares me more.

First, Ben Carson's aide shouldn't be using slang like "cripple" as it will offend handicapped people (I'm joking BTW)

Second, why would Trump hire people who have experience, it's not like he does
