This isn't the first DLC pack? I don't remember there being one before this.

I thought the first DLC was on or around when it launched? :? Everyone was in a huff (not Chris) about it.

Yeah, there was at least a small DLC at launch. I remember the first gen MR2 was part of it.

Also, this might be something that previous Forzas have done, but it never ceases to crack me up when you get a love tap from another car on one of your rear fenders and suddenly your windshield breaks.

Tom Servo
January 13th, 2014, 01:46 PM
Couple of notable things:

1) Suddenly I'm having an issue where the whole rumble feature in the controller just doesn't work. It'll be fine, then I start a new race and it's not there. It's amazing how reliant I've become on that to give me feedback as to what the tires are doing. This only just started happening this morning, but it's happened twice so far. Restarting the race seems to fix it.

2) I just did the GT Racing championship and was driving the 'Vette C6R. It's got a rear view camera and monitor on the dash. I was driving on Circuit de la Sarthe and noticing that out the front of the car, the road had lines on it and was asphalt right up to the edge, but the road surface in the rear view monitor was devoid of any lines and looked like an old country road that was crumbling on the edges, mostly covered in dirt.

Kchrpm
January 13th, 2014, 02:42 PM
That's disappointing, but not surprising. Trimming the detail from the mirrors has been a trick for helping frame rate since the old Papyrus games at least.

Think it's possible to check for those same details in rear view mirrors? Perhaps the size/resolution of that screen brings a unique demand.

Does it have the radar blind spot system? I'm guessing no.

Tom Servo
January 14th, 2014, 08:48 AM
I don't believe that it does, no. I'll have to take another car with a better rear view mirror out there and take a look. Right now I'm running a series with the 787B, and while the car has a great many things going for it, mirrors is not one of those things.

Tom Servo
January 15th, 2014, 06:25 AM
Finished playing with the 787B and just moved onto the Dallara for the Indy championship. Dear lord, that car is a dog in this game. It accelerates and brakes okay, but the understeer is just horrific. I think I've got 5 championships to go, so at least this is feeling less like work than F4 did. Admittedly, I am at the point where the cars are costing a small fortune, but at least so far I haven't had to go back and re-do any championships just to be able to afford anything. That would not have been the case without that economy adjustment they did, and it still might not be the case if I didn't have the "VIP" thing going on which gets me more money each time I level up.

There's a good chance the stock setup on the Dallara is just terrible. Can you download setups from other players?

Tom Servo
January 15th, 2014, 09:20 PM
No idea, I've never tried to download setups from anyone. Never even seen it tossed out as an option. I'll look at pictures, but I figure nothing I have is any different than what you've seen :)

Does the "manual-with-clutch used with damage off" trick still provide unnatural boost? Hell does that still work in Forza 4?

Tom Servo

I'm unaware of the trick, but happy to try it out if explained.

novicius

Set your damage level to "Cosmetic" and transmission type to "Manual w/. Clutch".
Race.
Profit.

Is that all it was? I thought there was more to it for some reason.

novicius
January 16th, 2014, 07:04 AM
I thought Turn 10 had patched F4 so that you couldn't powershift like this but I can't remember.

Currently, I just use a straight "Manual" setting but I can test it tonight.

jimeez
January 16th, 2014, 05:00 PM
you can d/l tunes from other players.
For tune setups, go into upgrade from the main career menu and use the back/share button on the controller to open up the setup manager and it'll have an option to view tune setups.

Found that for tunes don't know if it works I don't have F5

Booted up Forza 4 last night and tried the "Manual w/. clutch" + Cosmetic damage -- yep, it's been nerfed. If you try to shift without using the assigned Clutch button, it grinds and slows you down now. Shifting with the assigned Clutch button did seem a hair quicker than straight "Manual" but far too much hassle.

We'd need Cheeto here to confirm.

The inherent manual w/clutch design flaw is still in F4. The issue has always been that manual w/clutch causes a surge of power that is not realistic. It's like a neutral drop at every shift. That flaw is still in the F4. Just go to the leaderboards, every top score is done with the manual w/clutch and it is painfully evident on the drag leaderboards. Over the course of a 1/4 mile it can be the difference of a few seconds.

Hopefully it is not in F5.

novicius
January 17th, 2014, 08:27 AM
Am I not doing it right? When I shift without the clutch and (thought I was) looking for the boost with the ragged shift, I didn't "feel" it.

Kchrpm
January 17th, 2014, 08:36 AM
I think what he means is that when you shift using the manual clutch properly, the car accelerates noticeably faster than if you had used manual w/auto clutch.

novicius

properly
Ah, that's still different than the old way. I'll give this a spin this afternoon.

Set the clutch to"A" (I think) instead of one of the shoulder buttons, if you have reasonably masculine thumbs, you'll be able to press both the shift and clutch buttons at once. Much easier that way.

jimeez
January 17th, 2014, 04:32 PM
using the manual w/clutch is good for .5 - 1 sec @ lap on the longer tracks. On the short track the advantage is not so noticeable.

Tom Servo
January 18th, 2014, 05:22 PM
That just sounds like a huge pain in my ass.

What wasn't was what I expected to be a painful series, the 70's Grand Prix. Went with Lauda's Ferrari, and that car was an absolute blast to drive. Could handle being a little sideways without completely losing it, braked like it was dropping an anchor, and could put the power down surprisingly cleanly. Then I went to the Aussie V8 series. It's like driving a slug, I can't wait to get through this one and out of the car. Also, the rear view mirror is so massive, I'm pretty sure I can not only see behind me, but back through time.

That is pretty bitchin. Plus in case anybody hasn't been following along, Road America was also a free add on a few months ago.

Plus they have added every car to the free play section, just like Forza 4. Not sure why they thought it was a good idea to change it. And if you buy a car pack, you get a free sample of every car in the pack. In the past you still had to have the money to buy them.

I did finally get to play the game at a friends house, and wow, did it look amazing. And I thought the game play was damn good. I bought a Cossie Merc and it took it to Spa for a 3 lap created race. I turned all aides off and I set the AI to Pro difficulty. I ended up finishing 2nd after a very spirited drive up the 16 car field. I was very impressed by the overall feel of the game. Not enough to splash the dosh to buy an XBone but if I do Forza 5 will definitely be in my arsenal.

See, I figured the actual action of playing the game was still good, it was the secondary and tertiary aspects that needed work. Cool to read that they're improving FM5 vs waiting to roll out FM6.

They are still in a way, releasing previous Forza cars in the car packs (at least one or two each time). Thats what still annoys me about this game.

EDIT: Just watched that Forza 4 and Forza 5 comparison video Phil posted, and can't say i'm *that* impressed. :/ One thing that seems identical to F4 is the width of the track, which i'm pretty sure in F4 is widened slightly to aid online racing. Compared to every version of the track in Gran Turismo games, it does look wider, and even flatter. It still doesn't seem (from that vid) that they have the ripple strip heights correct, bumps in the track (the little ones that Kaz put in GT6's version) and even some elevations/cambers still look a bit off. I'll need to see a better video to compare, or even a GT6/F5 comparison vid.

One thing that is definitely noticeable (which i'd say is where most of the time was spent) is the details. '3D' grass, forests, graffiti etc all seems highly detailed, and the whole thing is no longer as grey is F4's version.

*Waits for inevitable comparison vid

Someone at autoblog ran them back to back and had some thoughts:
http://www.autoblog.com/2014/06/10/forza-motorsport-5-nurburgring-dlc-video-review/

Was the Ring worth the wait? A resounding "Yes!" Forza Motorsport 5's Nürburgring is the finest rendering of the track on any console by a simply huge margin. I sampled the track in Gran Turismo 6 back-to-back with my drive in Forza, and while GT remains a strong offering, the comparison test is simply further reinforcement that FM5 is truly a next-generation offering.

I've been virtually racing on the Nürburgring for nearly ten years, and this is far and away the most difficult version of the track to date. The advantage of laser scanning, as we explained in our post on the Long Beach DLC, is that what you're driving on is accurate to the "sub-centimeter" level. You really, really notice the bumpiness when running the Ring in FM5, particularly if you opt to run with the game's steering in the "simulation" setting. As you can see in the video below, I was constantly fighting with the wheel in the run from Adenauer Forst to Bergwerk. Not only do you need to contend with the Ring's notorious bumpiness, but because of the laser scanning, the curbing acts as a double-edged sword. It took only a few laps for me to learn that sections of curbing that I could exploit in FM4 or GT would quickly lead to a collision with the Armco barriers in FM5. Simply put, it's the most challenging racing environment I've ever experienced on a console.

I was also going to mention the slidy looking car physics in that vid too, unless it was fitted with budget tyres it shouldn't be sideways that much. a.k.a Noticeable central pivot point when turning/making corrections. :/ Pretty much never see that sort of thing in GT6 and i was hoping with next gen that Forza would lose it too.

But those vids look a lot better than the first one i saw, even though something still seems a little bit 'off' (not sure what either).

Im loving the amount of grip in the F5 version of the ring this time. I had built up an FD RX7 for a B class championship race and my god, it was amazing. The turns are carved up like roast pork on a Sunday night.Even doing it in the Transit for the rivals challenge is superb. Its clear night and day between F4 and F5.

We go through this EVERY time... The two chase cam positions in the Forza series are different in the way the camera moves with the car. In one, the camera is 'fixed', and in the other, it moves to the inside tire side of the car. Just because it's not what you are used to, doesn't make it wrong.

Yeah I finally caved and bought a XBONE and this game a few months ago. Really liking the improved and more difficult handling model, although upgrading tires doesn't seem to improve the grip as much as it should. Unlike Forza 4, this game doesn't put me to sleep anymore, it really keeps you on your toes.

Forza 6 should be great with more tracks and hopefully a more interesting career mode than 5 (can you say rushed?). One thing I love about Forza Horizon 2 that I hope they bring to Forza 6 is the ability to pick any stock car you want and they will put you up against AI in that range, so you don't have to always modify your car to the top of the class. I believe you can do this in free race mode, just not in career. And can we please get rid of the track introductions on the loading screen?

Forza 5 is free in September on Games w/ Gold - be sure to pick up these DLC packs to unlock these free vehicles for your garage. (http://www.ign.com/wikis/forza-5/DLC)

Started playing this a bit again since it was free. It's nice to have something else to play whenever the kids are around and I don't want to play a grown up game. This game still looks really good. I'm surprised on how good it looks still.

Forza has always been one of the best looking games on Xbox. Too bad they do not put as much effort into the actual racing experience.

It's not horrible. I just don't understand why campaign modes are so difficult for racing games.

It's like they try to make the single player mode as close to online racing as possible. But, end up falling short on both.

Why can't they make them completely separate experiences? Like Call of Duty. The single player is still a FPS action game. Uses the same weapons and mechanics as online multiplayer. But, the cinematics and progression are completely different. And both are just as fun.

Personally, I would like to start out in a cheap beater car and work my way up through the ranks to race in more legit cars & series. If you want to just hop in a fast car right away, the can still have an arcade or time attack mode.

All racing sims are terrible without a wheel, no matter how ‘simcade’ they are.

Wheels are to racing games as mouse and keyboards are to FPSs.

I will still beat you in Forza with a controller. :p

I use my controller for FPSs on my console too. I imagine less than 5% of the people playing Forza/GTS/PC2 have a wheel. Making a game that only works for such a small percentage of the gaming population seems awfully silly.

Claiming they're unplayable with a controller is the silly part, yes.

They’re not totally unplayable. Even I had fun with PCars and it’s twitchy controls.

But these games really come alive with a wheel. I had a lot of fun last night, finally getting it all set up with GT Sport and learning how to do it again. My lap times were tumbling as I got more confident, and straight away I was quicker than my controller lap times.

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FRIGGIN CHEATING DRIVATAR AI RACERS!!!!!!!

Got the driver controls on the easiest possible settings (TSC on, normal steering, cosmetic damage etc etc), and the easiest AI drivatar setting (new racer), and yet i barely ever win races, and am often struggling to hold off third and/or fourth place cars. After fourth place though, the rest of the pack are always a few corners behind.... I'm driving better than i ever have in Forza games, but still suck apparently.

It's completely out of whack, and if you're a new racer while having friends with good drivatars, you'll basically struggle to get into the top five or six.

Been knocking off all the championships that use race cars, since i loathe them the most. Couple more events to go and the rest of the game is road cars only (except for the bonus events/extra races you unlock in the championships).
