10 years, served as a minister in two governments.
Retired last year.

First ran 30 years ago for the nuclear disarmament party, but wasn't elected.

I'm trying to learn the landscape of Japanese pop and rock, slowly but surely. Recently I've been listening to this (late '90s/early 00s) group, Glay, a bunch. They're much like the late '90s post-grunge alt-rock that was popular in the U.S. and UK in that time too.

Hey neighbor let me give you some advice
The russians are about to pulverize us
In our sleep tonight
That is if the crazy arabs
Or the riots don't get us first
And the fire will rain down from the sky
The fire will rain down from the sky
People will die--people will die
People will die--people will die
But go ahead sleep tight in your beds
Remember what the wise man said

Chorus
There's nothing to fear nothing to fear
There's nothing to fear nothing to fear
There's nothing to fear (but fear itself)
There's nothing to fear (but fear itself)
And the temperature's starting to drop now
The temperature's starting to drop now
The temperature's starting to drop now . . .

Hey little girl won't you come this way
Won't you let me buy you candy or perhaps a chocolate shake
Or perhaps some nice cocaine or perhaps a little kiss
Or perhaps a ride in my big car
Perhaps a ride in my big car
Won't you make an old man happy
Won't you make an old man happy
Won't you let me show you paradise
(don't ask your mother for advice)

Chorus

If they don't turn you into a junkie or a zombie on the street
If they don't turn you into a yo-cat or a grinning jesus freak
If they don't take away your brains or turn your body inside out
If they don't take away your passion with a color tv set
They'll take away your heart and soul
They'll take away your heart and soul
They'll take away your heart and soul
Don't let them take away your heart and soul
But remember what the wise man said

Chorus

The genre-bending is pretty fun. :)

edit: she's pretty good at languages, too, apparently, judging by the comments on her Korean in "Gentleman."

Oh that I did...

For being from LA, she has a pretty distinctive almost New York enunciation that comes through, and I thought what's her name - Robyn - does a solid job of grabbing those details.

Fuck, I just wrote an entire sentence about Ke$ha's style. Well, now that the cat's out of the bag I'll also admit I like the Pitbull track with her doing the chorus. That guy is a shitty, shitty rapper but I like his voice. The combo works in that particular song.

If you like that, don't listen to her new album. It's out there. Happened to catch her show a month or two ago, and she played some of new stuff. "Experimental" is the tip of the iceberg.

Also, Hope Sandoval is a weirdo. She ended the performance by saying "I have to get off the stage now" and then leaving the building.

Good show nonetheless. Well worth it.

Recently 'rediscovered' this song. Heard it a number of times in whatever version of GTA Vice City it was in, and thought "mmm, okay. Next.".

But like a lot of my rediscovered songs, it seems i need to be in exactly the right mood, be in a vehicle/room with a great sound system (or even just surround sound) and the planet needs to be exactly alighned to Afrika and then suddenly i 'get' the song (or it gets me, or both).

So yeah, this one i heard in the car or the van the other day, and i now think it sounds awesome so just bought it on iTunes. :P

Sad, little man
June 4th, 2014, 10:01 PM
Hmmm, sounds just a tinge misogynistic to me, but I'll give it to you. It's one of their more dreamy songs. Let's try filing this one under women who rock...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QSkI6My1g

(Yes I'm aware of the irony of calling you misogynistic and then posting that video. But you gotta admit, it's a two way street in that case.)

thesameguy
June 4th, 2014, 10:16 PM
Not sure how calling a person who sings a mopey song mopey is misogynistic, but Alison Mosshart certainly has a strong history of rocking.

So does Karen O, for that matter. But when her vocal doppleganger sings would-be Mazzy Star songs, that's just moping, not rocking.

Any fans of The Who who have seen their early videos (1960s) might remember guitar and bass obviously not plugged in, Keith drumming "over" his drums without actually hitting them, Pete rolling his eyes when the camera zoomed in on him, etc.

These guys took it to a new level - near as I can tell, the drummer and organist are playing a stone tables, on of the guitarists is playing a pool-cleaning net, and the singer is wearing a speedo under his towel...I couldn't tell what he was wearing until he jumped in the pool. Crazy video, but always an awesome song!

Above is a live track typical of what you get at CSNY concerts. About 2:25 it morphs into a song called "Questions". That was a Buffalo Springfield song. Pardon me if everyone knows this but Steven Stills and Neil Young were in Buffalo Springfield, and I think it's neat that Stills worked this into one of rock's first "supergroups" - CSN and sometimes Y.

Wow, I just found a really cool live clip of Marilyn Manson singing "Eye" and "The Beautiful People" with the Smashing Pumpkins in 1997, and his voice actually suits the song really, really, ridiculously well.

So, first up, here's Eye in its original form:

Next, here's how they were performing it fairly recently:

The Beautiful People doesn't work very well, but it's a great rendition of Eye.

Still sounded great as ever especially with the audience choir.

Here we go, here's "Alive" from the same concert

Compare that to way he treats the vocals this performance from 2010

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fg-9gP7Wkw

It's still a good performance, but I reckon you can hear the parts he's being careful with and a few bits where he chokes as well

I've been noodling around YouTube listening to post-rock and post-metal; found this gem.

I am (thankfully) no longer listening to Sublime's self-titled record.
Taking the job of a music reviewer seriously is hard as hell sometimes.

I love how really shit music is exposed as being even stupider than first thought when someone does an acoustic cover of it.

Is this sarcasm or do you not like the album?

Hated it to death. I did my best to go into it with an open mind because that's the point of the podcast. I thought, "Maybe its just that the overplayed radio hits that every jackass stoner with an acoustic guitar plays all the time that are bad," etc. Plus, I haven't listened to music radio in years, so I should be relatively immune to the whole 'overplay' angle.

I was wrong.

Its a tremendously bad record - way over-long, with boring instrumentation and arrangements and atrociously childish lyrics and vocals. I was utterly shocked to find that the singles are the closest things to good songs on the entire record and even they are terrible.
It is by a huge margin the worst thing I've listened to for this program and I expect it will remain so for a good long time. I'm very glad to not ever have to hear it again.

Well, if you'd like to hear much, much more of my take on records from the '90s you'll have the chance when the podcast launches in a month or so.

The general concept is that my friend (who I've known for over 20 years now) & I go back and review music from our youth. We're doing 2 albums per show - one that we liked and listened to and one that we didn't (although we're playing a little fast & loose with that) with the idea being to see how much if at all our tastes have changed - its been pretty interesting so far. The one we recorded yesterday was Sublime's self titled record and "Superunknown" by Soundgarden.

Coming up next is "Chaos A.D." by Sepultura and Oasis's "What's the Story (Morning Glory)?" So that's going to be a contrast.

I am simultaneously interested and afraid to hear it. I still love most of Sublime - maybe it's because those records came out when I was still homesick for SoCal or maybe they're genuinely good and you're nuts. Hard to tell. :p OTOH, I am not going to see NIN because they are playing with Soundgarden, and I would rather run over my own dick with the Fleetwood (either one) than listen Chris Cornell or his lyrics. Why NIN couldn't play with pretty much any other band from the '90s or what's left of David Bowie's is beyond me. Basically, I don't care for Soundgarden much.

Edit: I also hate Oasis. I'd like to know if Soundgarden and Oasis will blend.

Edit 2: Having just watched The Punk Singer (http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/The-Punk-Singer/70273232?trkid=190393) I strongly encourage you to do a series of shows starting with Bikini Kill and following then tangled web of intersecting bands from that time. That would rock. :D

JoshInKC
August 13th, 2014, 06:16 PM
Oh, Bikini Kill is on the list, which is nearly 300 entries at this point. That'll be fun, my partner has a historical distaste for women in rock music, although I think that's changed - he liked Last Splash quite a bit. It'll be interesting to see what he thinks of Bikini Kill and L7.

Also, I really wish Bowie would tour again with anybody. His last record was great, his best since scary monsters.

Also, I was never a fan of Oasis. By the time they got huge ('95) my musical tastes had shifted much more to the metal end of the spectrum, so I largely ignored them. "Oh, its those whiny-sounding brits again," etc.
Like with several of the other things I've listened to for this (Metallica's self-titled album, Core by Stone Temple Pilots), I totally understand why they got popular. As a teenager, I did not and subsequently resented them and their fans for keeping "real music" from being successful.
But as it turns out, Oasis wrote some damn well-crafted pop songs.

Sublime is different though - If you can listen to that record and think that its genuinely good when you're in your 30s, you're doing it wrong.

thesameguy
August 15th, 2014, 08:36 AM
My 30s are so last month. And Sublime is still awesome - though probably not in any sort of traditional musical sense.

Oasis is still very bad. Derivative BS, and it hurts my brain that in a time full of musical revolution they got popular. If they got popular now or in the '80s, it'd make complete sense. It annoys me to no end that during a time of genuinely interesting music, they got slotted right into that genre and got popular. It's complete non-sequitur.

Of course, given how derivative the entire grunge movement was, and how many other types of good music got completely crushed in its path, maybe Oasis was what "we" needed to wake us up. My recollection is something like Violator -> Repeater -> Stone Nirvana in Chains. Generally. :D

Edit: Which isn't to say I was 100% opposed to grunge. I never much liked Nirvana, but STP (for example) is still totally rad.

I would posit that "genuinely interesting music" and the "musical revolution" had about a 6-12 month window in '92-'93 to squeak into some sort of popularity, if they didn't make it by then - no chance, the "movement" got completely commodified.
Also, Oasis is kind of a weird case, given that they came out of the UK market (which I don't even claim to understand at all) and were huge there way before they got big here. Therefore, I'd say Oasis was more of a marketing symptom than a root cause and subsequently can't be blamed for the musical environment of the moment.
And yeah, they are totally 100% derivative - no human could sanely argue against that.

...but STP (for example) is still totally rad.
On the show I actually equated STP to Boston. A super competent rock band that would have thrived within whatever the popular sound was no-matter when they came out.

Maybe Oasis was retaliatory for us sending all our Seattlites overseas. ;) Oasis was the least interesting of their Britpop peers, so of course it stands to reason they'd see the most commercial success.

Hilarious! When we were driving back with the Focus I was listening to Purple and suddenly got the urge to hear More Than a Feeling. Can't even remember what driving music was like prior to 64gb flash drives. (Although I have a distinct recollection of recording Interstate Lovesong to a tape three times in a row. )

They don't go to jail anymore but Russian society is yet to fully accept them. Wind the clock back about 20 years and we were roughly at the same place. The problem isn't so much the government, as it faces the pressure of public opinion and it's that public opinion that has to be changed first.
