American Horror Story: Coven: The Magical Delights Of Stevie Nicks. So far this season is far superior to last year's AHS: Asylum and it is even better than the first season.

Tonight House Of Lies and Shameless return on Showtime and Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey show up on HBO in True Detective.

Justified started its new season this last Tuesday and hopefully this season is better than last season(which was a huge comedown from the previous season).

Archer and Chozen start tomorrow night on FX. Chozen looks really interesting. Hopefully its as good as the trailer they've been showing.

A lot of people say it did after the third season. I haven't had a problem with it at all, it is just good, stupid, violent fun. If you want to play a game while watching the show, try and spot all of the Hells Angels connections and people who also appeared on either The Shield or Deadwood.

Forgot to set DVR for Archer, grrr. Hopefully they replay it after midnight? Maybe I have on demand.

Saw Anchorman 2. Was funny, but just ok. Felt like outtakes from a fan-fiction sequel.

Just watched Last Stand, that movie with Arnold as a Sheriff. Not bad if you have a really good ability for suspension of disbelief. Some ZR-1 and ZL1 porn too.

Been binge watching Parks and Recreation. So good. I don't know how I couldn't get into it when it first started.

It's not the worst thing in the world. Treat it like a soap opera for men with bikes in it and you'll enjoy it. Expect genuine character development, subtle metaphors about the meaning of life, or just people not doing retarded shit because they simply cannot communicate with each other and you'll be bitterly disappointed.

As Rich mentioned, it's worth watching for many of the actors from deadwood and the shield doing the best they can with what little Sutter gives them. Also there are some genuinely awesome moments. Both of the stupendous violence and "holy fuck they must have had a blast making this show" type.

I feel it's not as tight as it should be and the pace has slowed to glacial after season four, but I've kept at it.

There are also some shows that it records but I usually just ignore/delete because I'm too far behind in the storylines and don't feel like catching up: The Mentalist, Hawaii Five-O, Psych.

My regular ones are The Walking Dead (now on a break), Game of Thrones (now on a break) and Bron/Broen (the original danish The Bridge, third season is coming in Autumn 2014).
Also I do watch The Big Bang Theory (but just for the romantic innuendos, I can't stand Sheldon Cooper and I actually think it is a shitty and racist series to a certain kind of people. Plus, I don't like to watch sit-coms usually), Suits (no sure why, I got hooked) and Comic Book Men (but that's a show more than anything).

I've been watching Almost Human - going to stop at the end of season one: there are some nice moments, but it really feels like old fashioned cop double action and comedy stuff, like something from the 80s in a bad way - and Marvel's Agents of Shield - more because of wanting to see where they want to go with it, but from abysmal it has gone to almost bearable, so going to stop that at the end of season one, too.
I've tried to watch The Newsroom but it really did disappointed me. Same as with Arrow, Alphas, The Tomorrow People and Revolution (feels like Fallout 3 without the postapocalyptic push and with Aaron Spelling atmosphere).
Sherlock is not badly done but no interest in watching it further.

I will get to Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Black Mirror and the original danish The Killing series as I've time to wait since they are all finished series and BDs could be available when I will be finally able to afford them.
Surely gonna get to watch House of Cards and considering The Returned french series too.

If we count also animation, well, I'll have to catch up with Tron Uprising, but nothing else non-japanese really catches my interest.

They skipped to the end of the planned series and made it a movie, wrapping things up for the fans and making a pretty good movie in the process. It's too bad that they couldn't have been allowed to do it as a full series as originally planned.

Sleepy, snowy January afternoon here so I'm just poking through my Amazon movie wish list and remembered two car movies that I'd love to see again on DVD or Blu-Ray:

King of the Mountain (1981) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_Mountain_(film))
I was *way* too young to really understand this flick when it came out and it wasn't made for children so I can't even begin to place the year I saw it. '84? '85 on HBO while the parents were away? A pre-L.A. Law Harry Hamlin, Grizzly Adams, a too-drunk-for-Hollywood Dennis Hopper? How could this flick be bad? The final frames haunt my uncomprehending adolescent dreams.

Catch Me If You Can (1989) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_Me_If_You_Can_(1989_film))
I remember watching this a few times in a row as a VHS rental during my sophmore year in high school. The Twin Cities run, 20 miles in 20 minutes, "Fast Freddie"'s '57 Chevy hid away under the school's football field for years. Fun flick, soundtrack by Tangerine Dream and directed by a young popcorn action flick auteur Stephen Sommers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Sommers).

My first impression was WTF, LOL, SO STUPID, LOL LOLOLOL

My following thoughts are... this might work out really well. The modern rich/smart guy these days IS Zuckerberg, add in some extra arrogance and jealousy, and you basically have a Lex Luthor type in today's world. All Eisenberg needs to do is shave is damned head (he better be bald) and go on a movie star bulk out diet, and it might very well work.

That being said, I wanted a variety of different actors heh.

Pirates of the Caribbean movie series SUCKED MAJOR ARSE.
This is a series more gritty, fun, sexy and with less arcane crap-around. Plus it is a prequel describing what happened 20 or so years before the events in the Stevenson's seminal novel Treasure Island. Just for that it gets two bonus points.
And anyhow... right now the trends are: politics&intrigue (Homeland, House of Cards), horror with zombies and monster (no need for examples), kinda futuristic (Person of Interest, Almost Human) and fantasy/medieval (Game of Thrones, Vikings). So yep, Pirates are refreshing.

Llewyn Davis is prime Cohen Brothers and Oscar Isaac is superb as the ultimate asshole.
I really liked The Counselor as well, despite having heard nothing but negative shit about it. Being written by Cormac McCarthy I expected it to be dark and it does not disappoint. They get bonus points for using a Ferrari shooting brake in a few scenes.

Cool, I will rent it then, or watch on the Kindle or something. If you've read The Road, and can take more like that, try reading The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. It seems obvious he read The Road. He also uses a very minimalist style of writing. He injects some slight bits of humor here and there, but it is also mostly dark. I liked it a little bit more than The Road, but I'm not saying it's a better piece of work. I haven't seen plans for it to be a movie though.

There is nothing on TV I am looking more forward to than the next (last probably?) season of SOA. I think the unraveling will be completed, and spectacular.

Last night I watched a Danish film called The Hunt, with Mads Mikkelsen, (Le Chiffre from Casino Royale), who gave quite a powerful performance in this movie with a troubling and disturbing theme. The Hunt was nominated for a 2014 Oscar in the category of best foreign film, and for good reason.

I went to Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 3D over the weekend. My musings below.

Reviewers paint CA:TWS in the style of political thrillers from the '70s and it is. Unlike a villian-of-the-week plot, the movie was brave enough to address the polarizing stance that pro-police-state factions in our government (S.H.I.E.L.D.) have willingly embraced the tenets of fearmongering fascism (HYDRA). The end result is to enact the remote elimination of U.S. citizens via their voting/purchasing/testing/credit histories (the peaceniks, the atheists, pro-privacy folks, anti-establishment types, everybody who's ever logged into 4CHAN and other assorted free society threats & radicals).

From reading more than a few movie reviews, it seems that CA:TWS also lets us see what we want to see (and a lot of reviewers see right-wing neocon philosophies at work). But I think that it is *impossible* to suss out the political leanings of the "good guys" (civil liberty types) from the "bad guys" (pro-police-state folks): are the pro-police-state/pro-military-industrialists Republican in nature? Or Democrat due to the socialist desire to effectively/inevitably regulate every aspect of society (given enough time and resources) in the name of safety, security and equalizing opportunity?

Unfortunately (and I say this as a pro-regulation liberal Democrat), the reality is that Obama has NOT shut down the NSA, his administration is still continuing Bush's surveillance mandates (if not expanding them), and that the directors/writers of the movie have stated that the plot is derived from Obama's own Kill Lists. Our reality -- as well as the "reality" of CA:TWS -- is that People Who Fear are found in both political parties... which allows for our heroes to also be found in both political parties and that's always a heartening affirmation for us groundlings to hear.

The movie paints a picture. Our own biases apply the labels. It is damn tough to see that distinction amidst all the bullet-flinging and ass-kicking in this flick (it IS, however, refreshing to see Angry White Men shooting at each other vs. subduing yet another group of foreign brown-skinned people!)
In summary, I like CA:TWS very, very much. A fantastic sequel, better than any other Marvel sequel so far, and on par with The Dark Knight. Personally I would rate this better than RDJ's first Iron Man. I will accept that my opinion on that is in the minority, tho': IM1 came out at the perfect time, had the perfect tone, cast with the perfect actor.

The way I see it regarding AoS, I think it might be either late in this episode, or not until next episode, until the plot of Cap 2 is really felt. AoS seems to be happening in it's own little part of SHIELD. SHIELD was really presented as having multiple arms in Cap 2, which makes sense, considering the expansion of "security" they were implementing.

I'm very interested to see what season two has to offer, though I'm a little concerned that the show seems to be heading for a well trodden path. I could be wrong though.

Cap 2 was really fun but I'm honestly surprised that it's been getting the rave reviews it has. It was a very solid, well made action film from the new Marvel universe; a solid 7/10 but best one bar the Avengers? No. The whole plot was blindingly obvious and not hugely original, and the action sequences still had too much shakey cam for me. I didn't really like how the WS character was handled, and there wasn't nearly enough Colbie Smulders. :)

Re Captain America and Marvel....

So I just saw Chris Evans contract with Marvel, and Sebastian Stan's... Evans is "only" contracted for six movies. Cap 1-3 and Avengers 1-3. Sebastian Stan, though, is contracted for 9 movies. So, one might make the assumption that Rogers is going to die at some point, and Barnes takes over as Captain America. Which is a story that happened in the comics. That being said, if that's the case... Stan is going to be in quite a few movies as Captain America, or as a guest in other movies before that turn.

OR maybe Stan was just cheap to buy, so they contracted him for a lot of movies for maximum story flexibility and the whole Rogers death thing isn't going to happen.

----

Steve, I basically agree with your review. I liked the movie, but I thought the first one was better, and the Avengers was more enjoyable. I did enjoy the plot, it wasn't overly obvious to me, but it also wasn't overly shocking. The action sequences were strong, but the dialog scenes didn't have enough gravitas. Especially, surprisingly, Robert Redford's scenes. I'm not sure if it was directing, writing, or what, that caused that weakness.

Edit to add:

The scene with them talking to Zola-bot had me almost yelling at the screen... HE'S OBVIOUSLY STALLING YOU NITWITS. Something you'd think Black Widow would recognize, and probably Cap... but I guess... they needed a way to tell the infiltration back story to the audience.

Well, the first post-CA:TWS episode ("Turn, Turn, Turn") of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was on last night and they did NOT ignore the movie.

Insomuch as these things can be believed, at this point Agents Hand & Triplett are not HYDRA while Agents Garrett & Ward are. The jury is still out on Fitz (eh).

Ward's turn is especially shocking -- and most welcome! I hope that Trip replaces Ward on the team permanently (just gotta shave that ridiculo chin strap beard off). Going forward, burning out HYDRA elements should take up more than a little story bandwidth, I'd think. This should also mean more limitations on S.H.I.E.L.D. resources, I'd think/hope. I very much like the idea that Melinda May is primed to become the team's real leader, that Coulson is more of a cyborg with a heart of gold, and that Skye's mysterious 0-8-4 origins mean she's a Slayer.

Also, Skye has been becoming dowdier and dowdier over the season, a change that I approve of. I *hated* the fact that she looked like a Victoria's Secret model while living in a van down by the river.

Civil War is definitely going to happen, too many unique characters are being introduced (The Winter Soldier, Agent 13, Crossbones, return of HYDRA, murmuring of Red Skull coming back) to not have it happen. It's coming and considering how bad they're hyping ULTRON as the big threat, I'll bet that a major plot line of Avengers 2 is going to be the start of Civil War. RDJ's send-off will come at the expense of his likeability; when Stark-as-Hero returns, it'll eventually be with someone else (and cheaper), I'm sure Marvel is not shedding any tears over that. I think it's coming that soon -- and who better to direct it than Whedon??

Time will tell how big of an uproar people will have with Chris Evans out from behind the Stars and Stripes... I just wonder when the Skrulls are coming.

Pacific Rim on 3D Bluray. My first foray into modern 3D and, whilst I was generally impressed, it still looked obviously like a 2D movie converted to 3D with really visible parallax layers. I'll watch it again in standard 2D 1080p so I'm not distracted by virtual shit stuck to the screen.

I did enjoy the actual movie far more than I was expecting too, simplistic racial stereotypes and awful accents aside, then the penny dropped and I realised it had Guillermo Del Toro's signature fantasy look all over it. That last third (basically just a gigantic battle in HK) was fantastically directed.

In the pile I've still got 3D versions of Tron Legacy and Gravity, neither of which I've seen, and I'll score DREDD 3D on Monday.

Currently on season 1 of Orphan Black. Really liking the fact that it is Scifi Drama with only references to technology, so not much invested in VFX. Mr o Mrs production designer, my hats off to you madam. or sir.

Dont know if I have seen it mentioned in this thread, but if you like psychological stuff and dont mind gore I highly recommended Hannibal on NBC. Season 2 finale just happened and IMO it is one of the best shows on television. How they pull off the gore on NBC ill never understand, but every aspect of it is fantastic.

I've seen some of Hannibal here and there because my fiancee has been watching it via DVR, and I was shocked when I found out that a show that violent and disturbing was on NBC.

Yeah, Hannibal was a hell of a surprise. When I first heard about it I thought, "Oh god, thats going to be a trainwreck. Not a chance I'll be watching that." Then, about 3/4s of the way through the first season, I started hearing really good things about it- that it was "surprisingly great," Mads Mikkelson is hannibal, Bryan Fuller is the showrunner, etc. So we started watching and were blown away. Not just by the amount of gore, etc. but also by how flat out amazing it is.
Seriously, the people running it are not screwing around- They're doing their level best to make a great show.

LOL on the runway length of FF6...watched it the other week and was thinking the same thing. Fox Studios has reserved the rights to Adamantium. Time for a crossover already...even Hugh Jackman is calling for it.

The runway in F6...LOL. I think the action inside the plane and outside is supposed to be happening simultaneously. Plus all the melodrama and shit gives the impression that a lot of time has passed. In real time I'd say that whole sequence happened in under five minutes.

Anyway, I'm finally getting around to watching the third season of Homeland. I've heard it's not as strong as the first two seasons, but still looking forward to it. Got two episodes done so far.

Boom...the truth bomb. Men at Work RIP...best comedy on TV. Stupid small time TBS.

Caps shield...originally Adamantium in the comics. Renamed to "vibranium" for the movie. Now apparently degraded to aluminum/carbon due to cutbacks and lack of actual vibranium :)

Kchrpm
May 27th, 2014, 12:07 PM
I did some reading into it the other day, it always had vibranium in it, which was alloyed with various other materials.

Captain America has used multiple shields throughout his history, the most prevalent of which is a nigh-indestructible disc-shaped shield made from an experimental alloy of steel and the fictional vibranium. The shield was cast by American metallurgist Dr. Myron MacLain, who was contracted by the U.S. government, from orders of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to create an impenetrable substance to use for tanks during World War II. This alloy was created by accident and never duplicated, although efforts to reverse-engineer it resulted in the discovery of adamantium

JoeW

Well kiss my grits. Guess I didn't start reading Cap comics until after it was made of Adamantium.

Kchrpm
May 27th, 2014, 12:43 PM
"The" shield was never made of adamantium (he used a lot of other ones made of different stuff for story reasons before getting it back), but adamantium is based on vibranium. Info based on Wikipedia, potentially wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America#Weapons_and_equipment

Kchrpm

Marvel Wikia: http://marvel.wikia.com/Captain_America's_Shield

Later, Dr. MacLain's attempts to duplicate the shield, minus Wakandan Vibranium and the mystery factor, resulted in true Adamantium. Because of this historical link, the unknown substance composing the shield is sometimes referred to as "proto-adamantium".

JoeW
May 27th, 2014, 12:58 PM
Yes. Just read that marvel article. Proto adamantium is the alternate name of vibranium. Accidental creation unable to be duplucated. Then true adamantium, then secondary, then beta down the line. Most durable down to least durable.

He's not in it, he's just a producer. It's really a bunch of no-name actors, they've all been in minor stuff around TV. But you can tell Leary's influence is there in the humour, the big swings from deadly serious "patient is dying" stuff to humour.

I found this on another message board and thought it was amusing...

24 and Chuck are even more awesome when you realize THEY ARE THE SAME CONTINUITY, and that 24: Live Another Day is a continuation of Chuck's story.

Kate Morgan actually IS Sarah Walker. That's why they are both CIA field agents who look EXACTLY alike.

But their names are different, you say? First, remember that "Sarah Walker" wasn't even her real name. She used the alias "Jenny Burton" as a teenager, and her birth name was never revealed, though we know it started out "Sam Lisa." "Kate Morgan" is just another new identity, and, in fact, the "Morgan" part is a big tip-off, as explained further below.

Oh, and Kate/Sarah's "traitor" husband Adam Morgan IS Chuck Bartowski. But Chuck would never betray his country, right? Well, read on.

See, the past decade, while Jack Bauer and CTU were dealing with some threats in Los Angeles (and later Washington, DC, and New York City), Team Bartowski and the CIA were dealing with other threats a short distance away in Burbank.

Now, after the last season of Chuck, Chuck and Sarah settled down. But then some of their old enemies (Fulcrum, the Ring, Volkoff loyalists, whatever, doesn't matter who exactly) tracked them down. In an attack meant for Chuck and Sarah, Morgan Grimes was killed in the crossfire. Chuck and Sarah, realizing that they were putting Ellie and Captain Awesome at risk by staying close to them, and also wanting to track down their attackers and get justice, rejoined the CIA in London. They also had the CIA fake their deaths and give them the new identities of Adam Morgan and Kate Morgan. THE COUPLE CHOSE THE LAST NAME "MORGAN" IN HONOR OF THEIR DEAD FRIEND. And Chuck got some plastic surgery to change his face because it had been exposed to their enemies.

Now, we all know that Chuck would never betray his country. And how could Sarah ever have missed his treason? Well, he didn't, and she didn't! She was correct that he was not a traitor: he was set up!

After Chuck/Adam and Sarah/Kate got to London, someone in the CIA framed Adam/Chuck for selling secrets, and then had him killed while he was in jail. Some of the possibilities, who are also among our mole suspects for this season of 24:

-Steve Navarro was selling secrets himself, realized he was close to getting caught, and used Adam/Chuck as a fall guy.

-Jordan Reed had the hots for Sarah/Kate and framed her husband to get him out of the way. This also explains why Jordan thinks he has a chance with her: if she could fall for one tech nerd analyst (Chuck/Adam), why not Jordan as well?

-Erik Ritter wanted Sarah/Kate's job and framed her husband to discredit her so he could replace her.

This is why Kate looks EXACTLY like Sarah, has the same skills and occupation (even the same organization, the CIA) as Sarah, and why her last name is Morgan! It's awesome: we now get to see what happens to Sarah after the Chuck series is over!

Heh. Yes it does.

Pardon me if you're a hardcore Trekker and know this already, but for casual fans who might not remember every episode from the original series, I recommend watching these to understand what's going on in Star Trek Continues Episodes 1 and 3.

Watch "Who Mourns for Adonais?" from the original series before watching STC Episode 1 "Pilgrim of Eternity".

Trivia: The same guest star is in both episodes, filmed some 45 years apart.

Watch the original series episode "Mirror, Mirror" before watching STC Episode 3, "Fairest Of Them All"

This is probably more important than the one above because if you don't know what happened in MM, FOTA could potentially baffle the viewer.

STC Episode 2, "Lolani", is a great stand-alone story with a classic Star Trek plot with a moral dilemma. There's no homework assignment for this one, nor for the vignettes.

Transformers Age of Extinction is even more of an extended music video than I expected. I mean, the movies have always been basically just excuses to cut together major CGI set pieces, and I didn't expect much if anything more, but this one seemed even more ridiculous.

But the CGI set pieces were arguably even better.

I've spent the last two weeks doing doggy daycare, and it makes it very difficult to focus on anything. Plus, she isn't very mobile so I've spent an extraordinary amount of time in front of he TV. I've watched more television in the last two weeks than I have in the last five years combined.

I plowed through:

Orphan Black - Amazon Prime now has (or maybe has for a while) a client on the x360 which makes using it for streaming *really* convenient. Orphan Black came recommended to me, and I gotta say it's quite good. I feel like its goodness may be unraveling a little - the scale of the conflict is growing too large - but the characters are fun and interesting and Tatiana Maslany is so good it's worth watching on a purely technical level.

Under the Dome - The girl is a huge Stephen King nut (has a Dark Tower-related tattoo) so we watch this. Pretty meh - seemed really derivative of something that I can't name.

Wilfred - Only watched a handful of episodes, but pretty fun on the whole.

Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 - I think this is the only network show I've watched since Lost, and the only sitcom I've watched since the '90s. It's tasteless and wrong. And hilarious. The first episode came on really strong, but it mellowed out just a little. It's 22 minutes per episode, and I gotta say a pretty awesome filler if you just need to kill some time.
