It's interesting. The Japanese brands seemingly made less of an impact in the 70's and 80's than I would have expected from the narrative we hear about (oil crisis, cheaper, more fuel efficient and reliable cars going way up in sales)
Toyota and Nissan did jump up pretty considerably in about 1970 and again in 1980. Maybe not a considerable impact to the big 3, but they about doubled in each of those years. Honda was a bit of a late-comer though and made a huge jump in 1980.
It's kinda interesting that they don't account for the merger of Daimler and Chrysler.
