FD looks better even today :)
The 2 main problems with the new Supra are the auto and the ICE only supporting Apple Carplay and not Android Auto. Once they fix those, it'd be near-perfect for what it is. It's good that they haven't yet as otherwise I might do something silly.
Yeah, it's really unacceptable that BMW refuses to support Android Auto.
Indeed - it's slightly frustrating that BMW are about the only major manufacturer that's holding out against Android Auto. Firstly, I feel that they're trying to control their customers' use of the screens in the cars they've bought and paid for, which rubs me up the wrong way. Then, while I think it's fairly likely they will start supporting Android Auto at some time in the next 12 months, there's no guarantee they'll add that support to the unit in the Z4/Supra, and make it available to Toyota, and if they do there's no guarantee Toyota will take it - apparently the bare minimal customisation they did to the ICE system was already a big investment for them.
The gearbox sounds like it could be improved with a software update with improved calibration, but will be a key thing to get a feel for if and when I get a test drive.
Sure, the FD has a subtlety to it that the A90 lacks. If Mazda wanted to re-start the production line and make one more brand new RX-7 Spirit R, and sell it to me with a factory warranty, I'd be there. In some ways, as I say, I'm lowering expectations to find a new car I'd actually want. In other ways, the new Supra has obvious advances in body stiffness, electronic dampers, an 'active' diff I think, as well as things like active and passive safety.
Yeah there have been several times in the last 20 yrs I have considered an FD. But the shall we say “uniqueness” of the engine design and those trustworthy few who service it always steered me clear. At this point I just could never trust owning one as a daily and I don’t have the spare money to have one as an ongoing toy/project.
Everything on the inside is now dated as well. So the Supra is probably your best new car bet as far as getting something capable and produced by a trusted manufacturer.
I read a quote from BMW's head of whichever department is responsible for iDrive where he basically said he just didn't want Android Auto because he didn't like it. Sounded pretty Apple fanboyish.
Not only that, but I understand that modifying/replacing stock BMW ICE systems is, at best, challenging and expensive. That'd be OK if it were flexible enough to support Android Auto, and particularly if it were as good as the Audi implementation. But it's not! WTF.
Now this is more like it.

Looks somewhat better with that ridiculous wing on the back, but it's still an ugly pile in my books.
I'm happy to change my mind on its looks when I see one in real life, but for now it brings the 'yerks' for me.
Physicists: anything heavier than helium is metal
Car enthusiasts: except if it’s made of wood, like a Morgan
But the Morgan Plus Six is made of aluminium.
Why am I posting that here? Well, it has the same drive train as the BMW-Supra…
