My boss (who has generally been a bit of a one eyed Aussie Holden Commodore fan, but has owned some random Japanese cars too) quietly purchased some form of late model Merc.

Because my office is full of opinionated car guys and girls, he kept this purchase quiet until he actually turned up in it at work (possible because he lives in the South Island, and the office is North Island - so we see him every 6ish weeks).

I don't have the details yet, but it has left him stranded beside the road with a non-working car twice now, and he's driving a dealer courtesy car when I was briefly at the office today.

Will need to get beers into him, and get details.

friend of friend has an 2018 Audi A8; three loaner cars in three months, not a good start
it's basically what I expect as a reasonable outcome of buying a German car (even a VW, though to a much lesser extent, but still greater than an Asian or American car)

This is exactly why one should always buy a Japanese car.

I think a free S-Class could easily become the most expensive car...IN THE WORLD

Was checking out Toyota's new lineup of stuff....saw the C-HR crossover. Looks interesting, modern styling etc. then I checked the engine..... 2.0L 4 cylinder making 144 BLAZING horsepower and 139 lb. ft. of torque, pushing a vehicle that weighs 3,300 pounds. And it looks like that's the only engine offered. That's criminal.

Toyota's MO in the US market has been 'good enough' for some time now.

"Our 4Runner has an updated dual VVTI 1GR-FE making an extra 34 horsepower, should we put it in the Tacoma for the next 6 years of production? Nah, give them the old engine. Tacoma buyers would keep buying them even if they were breaking in half."

"Should we give the Corolla the independent rear suspension and disc brakes we use in Europe? Nah, let's save $100 per car, the only other car our buyers consider is the Civic until they see that it's an extra $1000. While we're at it, let's drag this platform out for a solid 20 years."
