Well, they're probably a better car than the Corolla that came afterwards.
I had a 2002 Corolla, with 480,000km on the clock, and it was a brilliant vehicle.

I'm guessing US models had corners cut on the brakes (rear drum), suspension (solid rear with crap damping), and interior. My buddy's wife had a 2003 Corolla LE, and it rode like crap even compared to my 2002 Sentra SE-R. Well, when the SE-R was stock, anyway.
There's a reason you see so many old people driving 2000s Corollas. With the badges removed, they are the encyclopedic "car." No drama, no trouble, no performance. They start, they stop, they are Toyota reliable. Vanilla ice cream, no sprinkles.

I'd put my '99 Accord in that category too. Boring, but it keeps going and going and going and going and...
I did new shocks, and uprated springs in mine, just because it had so many miles on it.
It then comprehensively out-handled the very modest power output.
Can't recall if the car had discs or drums on the rear. The interior was in amazing condition for the miles, I think I replaced one dash cubby hole hinged cover, shampoo'd the seats, and it was good as new.
