The thing that confuses me about that pic is that a work truck that long should fir the Smart in the bed entirely, instead there's and extra set of doors
Yeah, it's a short bed pickup. You probably could get long bed plus 4 doors, but the owner couldn't afford it. Or maybe the option wasn't available. Possibly hadn't originally planned to carry the car that way.
