    Let the torque wars continue!

    http://www.autoblog.com/2016/09/26/g...wertrain-leak/

The screenshots revealed that the 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 powering the Silverado and Sierra heavy duty models will boast 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. This is a substantial gain over the current models' 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque, and as Truck Trend points out, it exceeds the Ford Super Duty line's horsepower output of 440, but comes short of the 925 lb-ft rating.

Boy, I don't know how we successfully pickuped back in the mid 1990s with diesel engines making less than half that amount of torque.

People were towing cars that weighed 3000 lbs instead of 4500 lbs CUVs.

    The '90s? I towed a 6000lb trailer with an '80s non turbo diesel just fine. I have a 16,000lb motorhome with a 255 hp & 405 lb·ft 454 and it's fine. Fine.

My father put enough cement (for a large backyard patio) in the bed of his 145hp, 265 lb-ft, 300 I-6 ninth gen F-150 to ruin the rear springs.

Then he got some custom springs with an extra leaf so he could continue doing such things.

Outside of RV haulers or others who tow heavy things for a living, this is pretty much just a dick swinging contest and just another way to charge $65k for a truck. The 8L I6 in my work truck "makes due" with 260hp/660lb/ft. and hauls just fine.

Good point... I forget these things run well past a 5-series. I guess you have to justify those prices somehow.

Indeed. It's not like anyone needs a 700 hp family sedan, either. MORE POWAH! MORE TAWK! MY DADDY TOLD ME I WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH!

From what I've read, better engine management is what is leading to these big jumps in diesel peak power and torque in 3/4 and 1 ton pickups. The engines are physically indentical to the engines used in medium duty trucks, but in those commercial applications, the tune is conservative so that the engine can operate at near 100% duty cycle continuously.

The idea is that noncommercial users would prefer what is essentially an overboost function to allow those who tow and haul pretty casually to climb grades and accelerate up onramps more easily. My understanding is that these engines can't operate at 100% duty cycle for too long without overheating various components. The engine management systems dial back the output to protect themselves.
