Nice.
Ah well, it's all in my head -- she'll probably want a Prius and nothing else.

I think you misread - that's a stock 1.8t on 100 octane. It is/was the world's fastest stock Audi. There are "plenty" of 9 and 10 second 1.8ts. Here's one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TypmnMBIkPQ
Also remember that the 1.8t was Audi's smallest motor. With five cylinder and 2.7t and 4.2 swaps there's little ultimately reason to play with the 1.8t. You didn't see a lot of 600hp D15s back in the day, everyone did B-series swaps to get those numbers.
I think you'll find with the 1.8t cars that their strength is not off the line. Too little displacement moving too much weight to do anything great there. Their strength is in the midrange, and a chip tuned 1.8t is pretty lively on the freeway. Every time I drove ours I was initially disappointed, but merging onto the freeway was always reminded "there it is!"
Edit: Also, you know how most people drive. Most people drive in such a way that a 160hp Fiero is fierce stoplight warrior.
Eh? That YT link specifies that it's a "B7 A4 2.0L" with an aftermarket K03 turbo and supporting mods:

...but yes you're absolutely right -- I wouldn't be modding/tinkering with this one, it would be strictly my wife's car. I'm just shocked that modded A4 2.0T Quattro cars are so slow, I thought that once dedicated owners got them, they'd make them fly. I mean c'mon, we're talking about 10-year-old cars here!
But a totally stock engine - just a tune, exhaust, and FMIC. None of that is real go-fast parts. To build a 600hp car [that lasts] from a 200hp car you're going to need serious internal work. They just did the most they could without opening up the engine. I mean, good on them, but yeah, what's the point? Well, the point is new Audi buyers, obviously. There are plenty of dedicated Audi owners doing that real work - heads, pistons, manifolds, etc. That's just not this video.
If you want to go fast, get a B5 S4 and have fun working on the engine. If you want a comfortable, safe, presentable driver that won't embarrass you a chipped 1.8t is plenty. You know me, I've got a lead foot and nothing stock and I was never dissatisfied with that formula on our A4. It's fine. If it could have been a manual transmission and some actual suspension & tires it would have been great, but the round to flat wheel and oil pan to no oil pan interval with the girl at the wheel would have been unacceptable.
For this second round, I really wanted to get a WRX wagon but she just won't drive a manual and the autobox on the 2.0l is unacceptable to me. That was the attraction of the Forester XT or Outback XT with the 2.5l. Extra ground clearance, plenty quick, and all the STi catalog at your disposal. You do have the potentially pesky oil pump and head gasket issues, but really you can always just drop two grand and pull the engine on Day 1, and have a great trouble-free driver for 6-8 years. That's what I would have done if I'd found one. Hell, I still might... although honestly turbodiesel Jeep is pretty rad.
The WRX now comes with a CVT now. It's more economical.
Yeah, but we all know we're not talking about 2 or even 5 year old cars here.
I mean, I'm not talking about them, anyway.
Oh sorry -- I was looking for built B7 A4 2.0L's but I didn't find them. This link was all that the Googlator found for me.
Again, I am fine with a 14-, 15- or even 16-second "fun car", no problem to me. I just was shocked that I couldn't find a batch of 11-second B7 A4 2.0L's walkin' the world, that's all.
I really think it's because there are easier places to start. If Honda had a 2.7l twin turbo on the market in 1995, there wouldn't have been 600hp B18s. Kinda like how you see plenty of built LS3s, not so many built LS 5.3s. People might throw a cam and an intake on one, but they're not going through the bottom end and putting 15psi on them. There just isn't a point at starting on the bottom rung of the ladder. That said, you might look at VW, where the 1.8t *was* the top of the heap.

Yeah but I like the 2006+ snout better.
Also the LS1/2/3 actually IS falling out of favor -- a turbo on the Vortex 4800 is now the cheapest way to big power. A combination of insane factory durability and the rising costs of the LS. #sloppymechanics
Humorously enough, the same thing is happening to the '96-'04 2v 4.6L V8 mod motor. They're incredibly cheap since most hot rodders think they're garbage but add TFS aluminum intake & heads + a single 76mm turbo and you're making as much horsepower as a modded Terminator without paying that sick Terminator price tag.
So I was just hoping to see some sick modded 2.0 TFSI inline-fours as people try to work around the S4.

Can't fault you on the B7 looks, I prefer them as well... although the B5 S4 will always hold a place in my heart. Same of the C5 A6 - a 2.7t with a six-speed is still on my to-do list all these years later. A forum member whose name I don't recall had (and tracked) one, and I was always jealous. Although the looks are a bit dated, the C5 2.7t combined so much goodness into one package it still stands out in my mind. A couple years ago a friend traded in his cursed A8 for a very rare S-line 2.7t and I'd always intended to buy from him when he was done. When he finally decided to get rid of it, it was so wrecked inside I nearly cried. Some day...
